Abi tried to jump sideways at the tawara, which is how he ended up so high in the air. All Enho did was lift Abi's leg and push a bit. That's not to take anything away from Hakuho's Mini-Me; he's worked hard for and thoroughly deserves his joi KK. I'm also wondering where that Takayasu has been hiding all tournament. Pity he couldn't have shown similar spirit throughout, as it would have won most of his bouts for him. Normally when an underdog is leading the yusho race, I root for him, but I'm not rooting for either Shodai or Tokushoryu. My ideal scenario is the winner of their match-up tomorrow loses on senshuraku, while Takakeisho wins out, leading to a 2- or 3-way play-off. Same here, but I actually expect Shodai to take it at this point.
Kintamayama 45,081 Posted January 24, 2020 (edited) Ichinojou, makekoshi at Juryo 7: "Still two bouts remaining so i will face them with the next basho in mind. I wasn't able to train at all but if I train more I will be back. All i can do is go for it!" Yutakayama, unable to drop Tokushouryuu: "I wanted to help my senior (Shoudai) but it backfired royally. And my spirit was all there.." Kagayaki, beaten by Shoudai, no chance for the yusho: "I planned on putting pressure on him by moving forward and attacking, but got pressured myself and lost.." Hokutofuji, no chance for the yusho but getting double digit wins for the first time in 9 bashos: "I wasn't thinking of things like the yusho. I want a sansho special prize. I only got that one technique prize so far.." Kotoshougiku, ends his losing streak at five, needs one more win for a total of 700 career Makuuchi wins: "All I can do is study so as to not give up. I'm willing to suffer as much as needed if I am doomed to suffer.." Endou, kachikoshi at Maegashira 1: " I'm happy I got a kachikoshi in the first basho of the year. I will gambarize the next two days.' Tochinoshin, 4 straight makekoshi bashos, 10-18 against Goueidou and getting owned by him today: "It's too bad. I can't call that sumo at all.. I can't beat Goueidou at all.." Takayasu, looking OK but losing his 9th bout and will drop out of sanyaku: "I don't remember the quality of sumo but this is what I am capable of doing at this juncture. I will gambarize the next two days to remain in the joi (top Maegashira) ranks." Abi, losing gloriously to Enhou and makekoshi: "Come on guys, what do you want? I just went makekoshi so don't come in here.. He was one step ahead of me. My tachiai was perfect, but I put my leg forward because he is light and that was my mistake. I was thinking of shaking him off by jumping, but he was stronger than I expected. I was swept off my feet and carried out.. Without keiko, it's no good (he was injured in training before the basho). I might get scolded, but that feeling may have led to my makekoshi. I'll start from scratch. It feels like I broke my nose.."" Akinomaki 40,328 Posted January 24, 2020 (edited) Sanspo mentions the possibility of Tokushoryu getting paired against Takakeisho on day 15 - I said I don't think they'll do this, so it should be quite likely they'll do it. Takakeisho is the highest ranked rikishi active in the basho and Tokushoryu the lowest ranked in makuuchi. Since the start of Showa, only 2 times a maegashira was in the final bout of the basho, last time had the (first) yusho of m5 Tochiazuma I, Hatsu 1972, with a win over ozeki Kiyokuni. If Takakeisho wins tomorrow, then he should be given the direct opportunity to wrestle the yusho from Tokushoryu - if he wins as well, in 2 attempts with the same opponent, else Asanoyama could be enough as a test for the makujiri man, since Takakeisho is then out of it anyway. Shodai could win tomorrow and lose the next day, in that case this extremely rare top-bottom last senshuraku bout would serve to decide who meets Shodai in the ketteisen - and rule out a tomoesen with 3. So they'll have to wait till after the 2nd to last bout of the day to decide and then publish the day 15 torikumi - expect them to be really late. He has been facing increasingly harder opponents the last few days and he keeps winning in impressive fashion. If he beats Shodai and manages another strong win on the final day it'd be very well deserved. That said I'd be surprised if he gets past Shodai tomorrow. Me three days ago: "He's done great so far. That said, I'd be surprised if he gets past Kagayaki tomorrow." Me two days ago: "He's done great so far. That said, I'd be surprised if he gets past Yutakayama tomorrow." The guy keeps defying all expectations. That said, I too will be surprised if he gets past Shodai today. (Cue Takashoryu easily waltzing past Shodai.) Gospodin 190 Posted January 24, 2020 Shodai is a bit of an enigma, always good for a surprise win or, (way) more often, an unexpected, terrible loss. If he keeps wrestling like he did in this basho however, Tokushoryu has no chance.

Eikokurai 3,437 Posted January 25, 2020 (edited) What you have to remember about Tokushoryu is that everyone is higher than him on the banzuke. He’s the lowest-ranked guy in the division, so his whole schedule is against better rikishi. He’s the opposite of a Yokozuna, who always get easy schedules against guys ranked lower than them. I cheered Enho's amazing ashitori as loudly as anyone at that moment, but I have to wonder just what's going on with the gyoji's ass in this picture? That's quite a bit more badonkadonk going on than I expect from these guys. Edited January 25, 2020 by Kuroyama
Akinomaki 40,328 Posted January 25, 2020 What a shock this basho to have Ichinojo this early on the day. At least he's meeting only those with bad records now - hopefully he can get a win tomorrow as well. Shodai is now the man who always gets the better of his opponent, Tokushoryu the one who always survives. The bout will be decided by luck - and that is this basho overwhelmingly on the side of Tokushoryu (of course, I may be wrong, because mostly I am wrong)
code_number3 698 Posted January 25, 2020 Is there any information about the emperor coming to watch sumo? I saw some tweet saying that
Eikokurai 3,437 Posted January 25, 2020 (edited) I'm not going to lie, I rather enjoyed seeing Nishikigi beat Terunofuji then. Double digits for him. No zensho for the champ. Edited January 25, 2020 by Eikokurai
Akinomaki 40,328 Posted January 25, 2020 A recovered Nishikigi can beat an ozeki any day - this was just the style of sumo for him
Gernobono 466 Posted January 25, 2020 tokushoryu will not take the yusho, i guess in fact i would not even have considered him a contender for a yusho in juryo (with/without terunofuji)

Akinomaki 40,328 Posted January 25, 2020 (edited) Aiko-sama is back as sumo fan. Today she will be with her parents at the kokugikan for the 2nd half of makuuchi, for tenran-zumo. The hall announcer also instructed the spectators to greet them with applause and see them off after the yumitori-shiki Edited January 25, 2020 by Akinomaki

Akinomaki 40,328 Posted January 25, 2020 (edited) Another of my predictions that looks way off now: Chiyotairyu has still the chance to get kachi-koshi on the final day - the injured arm in full action. Kizakiumi also won: for some the old way to heal your injuries on the dohyo still works. Edit: and now Tsurugisho as well Edited January 25, 2020 by Akinomaki

Eikokurai 3,437 Posted January 25, 2020 Great win by Kiribayama. Moves to 10-4. Prize surely on the way for the Makuuchi debutant.
Akinomaki 40,328 Posted January 25, 2020 (edited) Kiribayama's double digits as new makuuchi in the past were a sure kanto-sho, recently this rule is nearly back, but a bit earlier for quite a while that was no guarantee for a prize. With that many rikishi deserving a sansho this basho, they might put the kanto-sho for Kiribayama on condition that he wins his 11th.
