The Chinese government and their propaganda team have so far hinted or claimed that the virus originated from the US, Europe, Korea, Japan.   They will continue to spread the nonsense to their political reasons.   Instead, they should share their info, and actively reach out to help other countries in any way they can.

China definitely withheld access and information initially however quickly changed course. On January 10th they shared the DNA sequence with the world and have recently sent equipment and doctors to Italy to combat coronavirus. I don't remember the US sending help to Japan, Korea, Iran, or Italy during the initial outbreak. In fact the US is maintaining sanctions on Iran which is exacerbating the human suffering. Yes China is using misinformation pointing towards US responsibility for the virus as is the US in blaming the virus on China. In other words, both countries are politicizing this to no good end in my opinion.

I don't know or care who started this misinformation but at least admit that the United States, especially Trump and the Republican party, has politicized this for weeks going back to the end of January. At a time when the world needs to pull together and cooperate, what China and the US are currently doing is helping no one. Perhaps we can set a better example than that of our governments.

China's lack of transparency and idiotic initial response killed untold number of people in Wuhan/Hubei.    Then by suppressing how bad it was (cutting off internet, reporting fraction of people being killed), most other countries didn't take COVID 19 seriously.   Now they do but it is too late.    A lot of evidence points to more than a 1000 dead per day at the peak of COVID 19 in China.  If China reported the true extent of what was happening, would the world be in this much trouble?   We'd never know but one wonders.

Oh please just stop. This is all on China. Every legitimate source points to this virus starting in Wuhan. If anyone believes anything else then they should be congratulated for believing the Chinese propaganda machine.

As for the rest of the post, I am tired of politics being inserted into the conversation. Not everything is about politics and I fail to see how a thread titled 'Coronavirus in China', gets turned into a discussion about U.S. politics.

Hi, @Eikokurai.  How things in Shanghai?   There are new reports of unusual developments like converting a football stadium into a temporary medical facility, sightseeing places being shut down.   Youtube rumors or are there some validity to them?

They’ve reversed a decision to reopen indoor tourist sites like museums but I’ve not heard anything about a sports stadium makeshift hospital. Sounds more like what they’re doing in Cardiff with the Principality Stadium. Shanghai has a population one third non-Shanghainese, including many foreigners, and gets a lot of visitors so they’re understandably wary of becoming a new focal point for a resurgence. I don’t see anything around me to suggest anything is worse than they’re publicly admitting though and usually we see evidence of it before it’s censored. My life is getting back to normal more or less, though still a little way to go until we see bustling streets again. I do hear ambulances quite a lot more than I used to though. Not sure if I should read anything into that!

The stadium in question is called Hongkou.  

Although I don't believe China's claim of 0 newly infected from the mainland for weeks now, it seems things are ok.   Proof in point?  North Korea has opened a part of its border with China .

I can see Hongkou Stadium from my office and I didn’t notice any unusual activity yesterday. Granted, it’s a couple of kilometers away and the view is slightly obscured by the metro line but I think perhaps I would have seen something, like a build up in traffic. People have been posting pictures of the cherry blossoms outside too.

Personally  I cant afford not to work.

If I dont work I dont eat  

As far as my rent goes it is best summmed up by my landlords reply When I first mentioned the corona virus.

He said,

I am retired and can survive a global recession although my only son and sole heir may not have much to inherit.  But some of my relatives own small businesses.  They are feeling the pinch already.   Other relatives are employed by private companies.  They will feel the impact next.   The ones who are relatively safe are the ones working for governments, e.g., my niece who is a school teacher.   Good luck to us all.   Most of our lives will not be the same after this.

I’m fortunate to work in a job that can be done from home so that’s what I’ve been doing for the past 2+ months and will until the third week of April. I feel for people who neither have this privilege nor an employer who can/will cover their wages. Governments have a very difficult balancing act. Public health must come first, but for many the more immediate concern is paying the bills. Many will play the numbers and determine that the chance of not affording rent exceeds the risk of getting sick and go out to work. Here in China the government has the authority to just tell people they have no choice and they can shut down all dissent about the policy. Western governments have been trying to find a solution that doesn’t ruin people. Both approaches have their pros and cons. I only hope the man on the street in all countries doesn’t get left to fend for himself.

I am not worried  about the virus ,so much as how people  and my customers will view  me still  working.

Up to to now though  only 4 of my customers have mentioned it and all of them where on the first day after Boris Johnson said we should  only work if absolutely  necessery.

This reminds me.  Many who went to Wuhan for a visit, tour, or passing through got stuck there for over two months now.   Some ran out of money and/or welcome.   They were left to fend for themselves.   Only in China ... and some cruise ships.  More stories like this to come as many governments start to shut down cities.

At the risk of sounding paternalistic, you should worry about it, even if only because you could transmit it to someone vulnerable. Like you I was never concerned about my own health, but I was terrified of passing it to my asthmatic son.

Sorry,You are right of course.

I avoid contact at work ,no shaking hands or even kisses(some of my older female customers)

  I even wash my hands after each customer now.

Dirty water but its bertter than nothing.

Considering the logistics of the job, I'd think a window cleaner might get more face slaps than hugs from women.  But maybe I'm overthinking this.

I am following CA's shelter in place order but still needs to go buy food and other essentials about once every two weeks.  So far, I have witnessed two instances of someone hurling a derogatory remarks to Asian Americans in the stores   They weren't racial remarks per se but more on blaming the current situation to Chinese/China.  I've seen TV reports of worse happening.   Aaaargh!

No,thats not my experience.......

That's why I said "Know your customers."

I don't force myself on them and like I said its the mostly the older ladies.....

I have been in window cleaner 30 years and some of them have been customers for  most of that  time,you get to know them very well.....

I work for a major international travel company here in Australia; once the borders were closed off I knew it would only be a matter of time, I was stood down last Friday.

I have savings and a short-term job lined up already, so I'm far better off than most.

Our daily infection rates have been dropping over the past few days so I'm optimistic that our distancing measures, while they may last a while, at least shouldn't get more intense. But who knows?

@Eikokurai - Chinese are stocking up on food b/c of a leaked government report on future food shortage?   Should the forum members organize a food drive to send you some ramen?    What next?  This pandemic is unreal.
