Yubinhaad 11,590 Posted January 24, 2020 (edited) 33-year-old former Maegashira Arawashi has retired after just over 17 years in ozumo - he was the last surviving rikishi from Araiso-beya, making his debut in November 2002. When that heya closed in 2008, due to the impending retirement of the shisho, Arawashi moved to Hanakago-beya which closed in 2012, since when he has belonged to Minezaki-beya. He spent 21 basho in Makuuchi, reaching a highest rank of Maegashira 2 and winning three kinboshi, one each from Kakuryu, Hakuho and Harumafuji. So far I haven't seen any indication that he's acquired Japanese citizenship. Edited January 24, 2020 by Yubinhaad 4

Katooshu 3,176 Posted January 24, 2020 I always liked how he conducted himself on the dohyo. Calm and respectful.

mt fuji 976 Posted January 24, 2020 I saw Arawashi has a KV50 of 15.8, which seems pretty high to me. I found this old post about KV50, but is there a newer ranking of wrestlers by KV50?http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/topic/12746-sumo-reference-updates/?page=
cyclonicleo 19 Posted January 24, 2020 Sad to see him retire but I think he's chosen the right time. I hope his future is a bright one!
Raishu 207 Posted January 24, 2020 I always had a soft spot for him, since we share birthdays together. Good luck for his future endeavors! Very likely the first of many sekitori or ex-sekitori retirements we will see this year.
Michishige 66 Posted January 24, 2020 Why are they using a photo of Chiyoshoma to announce Arawashi’s intai? It’s a conspiracy!
Yubinhaad 11,590 Posted January 24, 2020 Arawashi and Kotooshu made their debut together and fought in their first basho on the banzuke, a win for Kotooshu who went up the ranks a lot quicker. Arawashi dreamed of meeting him again in Makuuchi, but unfortunately he couldn't quite get there in time - Kotooshu retired one basho before Arawashi made his Makuuchi debut. A few pictures in the box. Spoiler Kotooshu and Arawashi on the dohyo for the ceremonials at the end of their shindeshi basho. Naruto-oyakata presents Arawashi with a bouquet at his intai press conference. And a close-up of the bouquet courtesy of the atelier who created it. Picture from the Kyokai. And finally at the press conference with his shisho Minezaki-oyakata (former Maegashira Misugiiso). 3
ryafuji 810 Posted January 24, 2020 I always find it interesting when they are asked what their most memorable bout is. In Arawashi's case it wasn't any of his three kinboshi - he said it was his Day 14 win over Tamaasuka in January 2014 , because that gave him his first kachi-koshi as a sekitori.
shumitto 418 Posted January 26, 2020 Kudos for his persistence. In 2007 he suffered a major injury on his right(?) shoulder, which sidelined him for many months. He came back heavily taped and didn't progress much for a while, but eventually reached sekitorihood. He was a good sekitori, but his power deserted more than a yeard ago or so, so good timing. Jabbamaru 166 Posted January 26, 2020 Best wishes for him... Chiyoshoumas makekoshi and Arawashis intai on the same basho...hard for the family...
Akinomaki 40,020 Posted April 7, 2020 (edited) Arawashi has his danpatsu-shiki postponed. It was planned for May 31st - now the Natsu basho is on schedule then. New date is Feb. 23rd next year. Arawashi presently comes to the heya as a coach, his future plans are undecided. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202004060000538.html Edited April 7, 2020 by Akinomaki 1
Rainoyama 1,157 Posted April 7, 2020 Best of luck for him in the future, he was a great technician and was very entertaining to watch. We always joke about him being Chiyoshoma's twin but I think he is much better than what Chiyoshoma will ever be, besides Chiyoshoma is an annoying brat while Arawashi was always respecful.

Arawashi had his danpatsu-shiki today in the kokugikan - about 330 had a cut, 140 of them NSK related. Minezaki-beya disappears after the Haru basho. Harumafuji o o Kakuryu o Minezaki-oyakata o a kiss from the wife o He plans to go on living in Japan, but future plans are still undecided. Kintamayama 44,635 Posted February 23, 2021 The first sekitori to come out of the soon to be defunct Minezaki beya was Mongolian ex-Arawashi. He started off at Araiso beya, which folded in September 2008 as the oyakata retired, moved to Hanakago, which folded as well in May 2012, then moved to Matsugane who was the last to cut his hair today and is folding as we speak, by coincidence or not.. 1

Yamanashi 3,771 Posted February 24, 2021 I truly feel sorry for these recent retirees. Arawashi lasted for 18 years, spent half that time just getting to sekitori, and at retirement this uncertainty about when he can move on. All these recent intai just make me a little sad.
