44th Fuji TV Grand Sumo Tournament

It's that time again for the Fuji TV-sponsored one-day prize money tournament, which will take place at the Kokugikan this Sunday, February 9th. As usual it will feature juryo division rikishi in three sections playing down to a tomoe-sen final, while the makuuchi rikishi are competing in a standard knockout bracket down to the final match.

Besides the ever popular shokkiri demonstration, the bonus live programme once again features three "old boys" exhibition matches. This time:

Ajigawa (ex-Aminishiki) vs Otowayama (ex-Tenkaiho)
Tomozuna (ex-Kyokutenho) vs Kitajin (ex-Shotenro)
Naruto (ex-Kotooshu) vs Onomatsu (ex-Daido)

The first and third pairing never happened in honbasho competition, while the second stopped getting scheduled after 2011 when Kyokutenho and Shotenro became brothers-in-law. Nakamura (ex-Yoshikaze) will be joining on commentary for these matches. Update, see below.

(Is this the first year since they revived the OB matches that ex-Takamisakari isn't part of them? I think it might be. Of course he's probably got bigger things on his plate right now.)

In addition to the usual sale of three chanko varieties - this year presented by the Hakkaku, Sakaigawa and Takasago stables - there will also again be a lottery for ticket holders to win photo-ops with either Asanoyama, Shodai or Enho at the arena.

The whole thing starts around 11:30 JST, with TV coverage as always for the makuuchi portion of the event. Satellite channel Fuji TV One will be broadcasting from 14:30 for the makuuchi dohyo-iri and the early rounds of the top division tournament, before making way for terrestrial Fuji TV from 16:05 to 17:20 for the tournament conclusion and trophy presentation. A full rebroadcast on Fuji TV One is also scheduled for 21:00 to 23:50.

The draws for the two divisional tournaments were released yesterday.

I don't really have anything to post about the NHK Welfare Tournament that will take place two days later, so I'm not sure if that should go into this thread like last year or a separate one. Feel free to post here about that or not, and I'll adjust the topic title if needed.

There won't be much on the sumo part, and the singing and the rest will get an extra topic anyway

Videos will  likely appear later on the usual platforms. There are streams that carry Fuji TV, like Sakura TV expensive, or free and obscure - mainly the mov3 stream. The latter can safely be recorded with youtube-dl (and watched with a few seconds delay): youtube-dl --hls-use-mpegts mov3.co/fujitv/

Guest commentator: Yoshikaze

Actually, Kise (Araiso) is main commentator, guest commentator for the main program is now Goeido (Takekuma) https://www.fujitv.co.jp/b_hp/japanetsumotournament/index.html

Aminishiki (Ajigawa ) is the commentator for part 1 (after he had his OB bout), on the CS channel Fuji TV One https://otn.fujitv.co.jp/b_hp/920200009.html

Boo. Change of plans apparently (second time already?), the official website now lists the matches as:

Kitajin (ex-Shotenro) vs Otowayama (ex-Tenkaiho)
Ajigawa (ex-Aminishiki) vs Sanoyama (ex-Satoyama)
Naruto (ex-Kotooshu) vs Onomatsu (ex-Daido)

The OB bouts are a far cry from what they were when they first started, you had Kitanoumi v Wakanohana II, Takanohana I v Asahikuni, Masuiyama II v Kaiketsu, Mienoumi v Takanosato, Hokutenyu v Asashio (1991), then 1992 you had Kitanoumi v Wakanohana II, Chiyonofuji v Hokutenyu.

I don't think Enho gets to fight Hakuho unless there's a playoff for the yusho. This, because they are in the same heya

Actually, they might fight tomorrow - the rule is only for a honbasho, not for the 1 day tournaments. They both simply have to win their first bout - Meisei is just as semi-kyujo as Hakuho, Enho has a good chance.

I hope next year we can get Araiso vs ex-Kotoshogiku

Notice that there is no tape or braces on any of the rikishi.  In every match, the two rikishi immediately go for yotsu grips.  There is no tsuparri.  This is pure "look good" sumo.

Broadcast seems to be skipping over several bouts. Not sure if there's several late kyujo, or if they're just prioritizing ads...

Yeah I'm glad it's not just me.

Hakuho's wry smile was the best

Hakuho has nothing to prove, which is why he is giving the people the entertainment of little Enho taking down a real big giant. I'm sure that doesn't happen in keiko though.

That Hakuho - Enho bout was a joy to watch. Like a father play fighting with his son and letting him win so he can have a moment of pride. Some entertaining bouts altogether.

At least Aminishiki vs. Satoyama did look quite serious. They should introduce old boy grudge matches :-D

Enho vs. Hakuho (well, the whole basho) had some priceless scenes. Hakuho looked like the proudest dad EVER.
