Asashosakari 19,653 Posted February 23, 2020 (edited) Tokushoryu M2w. I think that might well be a complete blank among the GTB player field. Tough for Kotoyuki, though at least it's a stablemate who benefited from it... Terunofuji half a rank higher than I thought he could reasonably go, interesting that they did the straight-up by the numbers placement for him and Daishoho, splitting the two J5's. But in a serious WTF decision: Yago (J7w 4-11) J10 Takagenji (J10w 7-8)Wakamotoharu (Ms1w 6-1) J11 Midorifuji (Ms2e 5-2)Hakuyozan (Ms4w 6-1) J12 Asagyokusei (J12e 7-8) Sure, somebody had to fill the J10e spot, but Yago?!? Flabbergasting. Edited February 23, 2020 by Asashosakari 1
Yubinhaad 11,761 Posted February 23, 2020 Seven shikona changes on this banzuke, five of them are the first proper shikona for those rikishi. Naruto heyagashira Motobayashi is now Oshoryu, the first kanji there of course comes from his shisho (former Ozeki Kotooshu). He also changes a kanji in the given name to make it Kenta (but not the same kanji as the heya's yobidashi Kenta). From Kise-beya, Koba's new shikona honours the mountain of the same name which overlooks his home city of Takeo, Saga prefecture. Sakaigawa-beya's Shimomura follows in the footsteps of his father - Tsunenoyama's first shikona was also Nishinoryu. I almost fell into the trap of assuming Kotomiyakura was the standard Sadogatake practice of Kotofamilyname, but in fact that was an actual shikona. I don't know the story behind it though, and I'm afraid the same is true of his new one, Kotokantetsu. Over in Takadagawa-beya, Hasegawa is now Awanokuni, an homage to the pre-Meiji Awa Province which contained his hometown Kamogawa and is now part of Chiba prefecture. Banzuke debutant Sakai is now Takatsukasa, and also drops two kanji to shorten his given name, from Keijiro to Kei. Ms10w Motobayashi Kenji > Oshoryu Kenta (欧勝竜 健汰) Ms18w Koba > Mifuneyama (御船山) Sd36e Shimomura > Nishinoryu (西乃龍) Sd76w Kotomiyakura > Kotokantetsu (琴貫鐵) Jd13e Hasegawa > Awanokuni (安房乃国) Jd15e Chiyonosora > Chiyotenfu (千代天富) Jk26w Sakai Keijiro > Takatsukasa Kei (鷹司 慶) Kotonowaka's promotion to Makuuchi marks the ninth time that a father and son(s) have both reached the top division. 5

Katsunorifuji 65 Posted February 24, 2020 24 minutes ago, John Gunning said: Assuming he loses his new found super powers and newer progresses beyond that rank (highly likely) he'll retire as the yusho winner with the lowest career high and only the second ever not to make sanyaku at least once. If he surprises and holds his own and finishes 8-7 would he have a chance of moving up into sanyaku for May? Might seem unlikely for him to do well against higher ranks but he did beat Takakeisho last month.

But I have a feeling he partied too much. His new belly size will tell. I predict he goes 5-10.

Generally speaking, everybody who goes 8-7 at M2 has a chance of getting into sanyaku... Whether it's actually going to happen in a specific rikishi's case is impossible to answer ahead of the basho, since that's far too dependent on everybody else's results. The Japan News, Sept. 12th, 2026: Yokozuna Names Confuse Casual Fans by Sam Revving Sumo fans are experiencing one of the most exciting eras in decades with the rise of the current Yokozuna tandem: Kinki University grad Oshouryu from Osaka, and Mongolian Hoshouryu, nephew of former Yokozuna Asashoryu. Although their shikona ring names are spelled differently, their names sound almost identical (the English term is "homonym"). "I don't follow Sumo very closely", says Yohei Watanabe, 44, a manager for a Tokyo marketing firm. "I thought there was only one Yokozuna! Then I caught a playoff bout on TV and saw two guys with almost the same name. Then I finally figured it out! That's the way I see it." ...
WAKATAKE 2,671 Posted February 24, 2020 (edited) Banzuke topics courtesy of the NSK and Nikkan Sports: - Takekeisho is the first sole ozeki (not including our YO this basho) to be ranked on the banzuke since Kotokaze back in January of 1982 - Asanoyama ranked at sekiwake for the 2nd consecutive basho, 3rd consecutive in sanyaku - Shodai returns to sekiwake, last appearance at the rank was January of 2017. Last sanyaku appearance (komusubi) was March of 2017 - Hokutofuji and Endo return to komusubi after two basho - Kotonowaka the Younger makes his makuuchi debut this basho. He is the first Sadogatake debutant to the division since Kotoeko back in July of 2018 (who ironically fell down to Juryo this basho). He is the first debutant from Chiba prefecture since Takanosho back in September of 2018 and the 23rd overall since WWII. He also makes himself and Kotonowaka the Elder the 9th overall grouping of fathers and sons (calling them groupings because two of these had two brothers) to reach the top division - Nishikigi returns to the top division after two basho - Daiamami returns to the top division after seven basho, last appearance was January of 2019 - Midorifuji makes his sekitori debut in Juryo. He is the first Isegahama beya rikishi to reach sekitori status since Terutsuyoshi back in January of 2017. He is the first Juryo debutant from Shizuoka prefecture since Tochihiryu back in March of 2013 and the 11th overall since WWII. He is the 13th overall collegiate wrestler from Kinki University and the first since Asagyokusei back in September of 2020 - Wakamotoharu and Akiseyama return to Juryo since November of 2019 - Hakuyozan returns to Juryo since May of 2019 https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202002230001107.html http://www.sumo.or.jp/ResultBanzuke/topics/ Edited February 24, 2020 by WAKATAKE 4

Who cares if the kanji is different if the pronunciation is the same.

One basho cancelled and then the unofficial one where the winner didn’t get the cup, but presumably it was returned by the Hatsu winner? I need to go to bed.
