Hakuho is backing the kyokai's decision to promote Asanoyama to Ozeki despite a degree of reservation from certain observers re the numbers and the fusensho involved in qualifying. In addition, one should keep in mind that Hakuho did not say the same thing about Takakeisho when he got promoted exactly one year ago. The Dai-Yokozuna has intimate knowledge of both men's oozumo skills, not to mention a good eye for talent. So Hakuho's statement is both a nod to talent and a nod to the NSK. I don't believe it's the 32/45 that matters so much as his 61/90 (with a 12/3 yusho and a very understandable post-yusho slump to 7-8) featuring 5 double-digit scores in the last six basho. That's ozeki sumo - end of. Hakuho nominated Asanoyama as his likely successor, so don't be surprised if Asanoyama is the yokozuna doing the dohyo iri at the 2121 Olympics opening ceremony. All he has to do is continue doing his excellent sumo and gaining experience at the same rate, so I hope he gets the chance to in May and beyond. 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

You have a point, but the one time that Takakeisho "upset the GOAT cart" was in a tournament from which Hakuho ended up withdrawing (i.e., was fighting with an injury). I suspect that you might contest the severity of the injury, and suggest that Hakuho withdrew out of embarrassment. But I contest that timing is everything, or at least it is something... In days gone by, an aging Yokozuna would often retire after a loss or two against their unofficial successor. Perhaps Hakuho is both laying down the gauntlet to Asanoyama and letting everyone know where his own new benchmark is. i.e. When the day comes that Asanoyama gets the better of him, he will step aside.
