Great to see Terunofuji back!
3 Makuuchi promotions from Sadogatake - I wonder if this is a record for a single sumo-beya.

Ten* shikona changes for this banzuke, half of them for those making their honbasho debut (although when that will happen remains to be determined, of course).

The only change from the top four divisions is a minor one, a simple middle kanji alteration for Saidaiji. He also changes the first kanji in the given name - the reading remains Kohei, and the kanji are now the same as his real given name.

In Jonidan, Asonishiki is just one letter but many ranks away from being an Ozeki - he's now Asonoyama. We'll have to try and avoid any Amanishiki/Aminishiki style mix-ups.

Mimori is now Kinotsukasa, receiving the traditional suffix for an Irumagawa-beya rikishi.

Omura has perhaps the most interesting change on this banzuke - he is now Chikureisen, and also changes from his real given name Gennosuke to Genzo.

Nakagawa-beya's Okuniasahi has reverted back to his family name Yoshizawa.

As noted at the top there are five changes among those from last basho's shindeshi group. The least imaginative is Naruto-beya's Fukasawa, who simply adds the shisho's kanji in front to become Ofukasawa.

Kakeno is now Suzaki - the kanji are those of the city of Susaki in Kochi prefecture, but I don't know if there's a connection with the shikona of this Gifu native.

I was one-tenth prepared for making this post - Komine's new shikona Chiyotaisei was displayed on the heya website for at least a week already.

It's been a while since Kataonami-beya had to make a shikona change, but new recruit Ikeda is now Tamanohoshi.

Lastly, Yagi is now Ieshima, very closely following his brother Ienoshima's lead.

Ms47w Saidaiji Kohei (西大司 幸平 > 西太司 康平)
Jd3e Asonishiki > Asonoyama (阿蘇ノ山)
Jd31e Mimori > Kinotsukasa (毅ノ司)
Jd100e Omura Gennosuke > Chikureisen Genzo (大村 玄之輔 > 筑零扇 源造)
Jd115e Okuniasahi > Yoshizawa (吉澤)
Jk15w Fukasawa > Ofukasawa (欧深沢)
Jk16w Kakeno > Suzaki (須崎)
Jk24e Komine > Chiyotaisei (千代大聖)
Jk27e Ikeda > Tamanohoshi (玉の星)
Jk34e Yagi > Ieshima (家島)

* Nikkan lists one more alteration, Jk32e Takasu has changed the first kanji of his name to one that apparently can't be displayed, although there's no change to the reading. As they put it:

高須→■須(たかす=田子ノ浦)(■は高の上の口の縦棒を上下に延ばす)

And finally, two more rikishi make given name changes:

Ms14e Daiseido Yoshitomo > Masaru (喜悌 > 勝)
Jd11e Miyanofuji Takashi (峻氏 > 峻史)

Lots of Koto’s in the bottom of makuuchi. M13 to M17 each with one a piece. Looks like the early matches of the day will be fun to watch for those of us who follow Sadogatake Beya.

It will be good to see Terunofuji back in action in Makuuchi (though ‘inaction’ is more likely). Let’s hope he has what he needs to KK as there’s little room for error down the bottom.

Scheduling will be fun. Maybe they’ll use the inevitable long break to work out all the possible permutations in advance.

I'm working on it. I couldn't find a good search term, but I'm doing the query by year from 1949 and I already have another 3 promotions to Makuuchi after a basho from a single heya. After Nagoya 1961 Hanakago-beya had 3 promotions.

EDIT: also Futagoyama after Natsu 1981. I can't find an instance of more than 3.

Those guys struggle to breathe during a bout at the best of times. Best not restrict their oxygen intake anymore.

I think he will get his KK.  But it is bothersome that in the last two bashos, he faltered in the 2nd half.   Lacking stamina?  If so, this is a perfect time to get in shape.

Shodai and Mitakeumi sharing the Sekiwake rank is oddly satisfying.

I think this may be Chris Gould's best ever sumo-related video:

@Yubinhaad, you reported back in October that Kotoshoho had changed the given name in his shikona from Toshiki to Yoshinari - is that still the case? Sumo Reference has it only for Kyushu, with him switching back to Toshiki after that tournament.

His Kyokai profile page still says Kotoshoho Yoshinari, and no further changes have been listed for him by Nikkan.

A couple of other notes for @Doitsuyama:

Komine's new shikona is Chiyotaisei, not Chiyotaisai as currently shown on the English side.

Also, Sokokurai doesn't show up in a Rikishi.aspx search, which I assume is connected to his position being left blank on the site's banzuke page.

Banzuke topics according to the NSK for Natsu 2020:

- Takakeisho is kadoban for the second time as an ozeki, first time was Nagoya 2019
- Asanoyama is the first new ozeki in the Reiwa era (second overall) after Takakeisho was promoted in Natsu 2019. He is also the first wrestler from Takasago beya to be promoted since Asashoryu back in Aki 2002. He is the first ozeki promotee from Toyama prefecture since Tachiyama in Natsu 1909. For collegiate wrestling he is the first wrestler from Kinki University to be promoted to ozeki since his stable master Asashio back in Natsu 1983, and the first collegiate wrestler since Kotomitsuki in Aki 2007, and 8th collegiate ozeki overall. His 3 basho from sanyaku debut until ozeki promotion ties for second place with Taiho, Yutakayama II, and Miyabiyama. The record holder is Terunofuji with 2 basho. First sandanme tsukedashi ozeki
- Shodai's second consecutive tournament for sekiwake and sanyaku overall
- Mitakeumi is back at sekiwake for the first time since Kyushu 2019
- Daieisho is back at komusubi since Hatsu 2020
- Okinoumi returns to komusubi for the first time since Natsu 2016, 24 basho. His last sanyaku appearance (sekiwake) was Kyushu 2016, or 21 basho ago
- Kotoshoho is the first debutant into makuuchi from both Sadogatake beya and Chiba prefecture since Kotonowaka the Younger in the last basho (Haru 2020)
- Wakatakakage is back in makuuchi since his ill-fated debut back in Kyushu 2019
- Kotoeko and Kotoyuki are back in makuuchi since Hatsu 2020
- Terunofuji returns to makuuchi since falling out of the division in Hatsu 2018, the first time in 14 basho. He is the first makuuchi rikishi to fall to Jonidan and successfully return. He now is the new record holder for lowest demotion from makuuchi, which is Jonidan 48w. This far surpasses the previous record holder Tosayutaka who returned from sandanme 84w
- Chiyonoo returns to Juryo since Kyushu 2018
- Asabenkei returns to Juryo since Natsu 2018
