Kintamayama 45,530 Posted August 24, 2020 (edited) Yokozuna Kakuryuu answered some media questions today. He has resumed training but only the fundamentals. "I have been able to finally be able to use my injured right elbow a bit. I have a personal trainer, so I've been able to relax it a bit and am doing my best not to put too much pressure on it and not move it unnecessarily. It was very frustrating to go kyujo on day 2 last basho, but if that frustration isn't there, you can't face the future," he said. He had injured the elbow in the past but re-injured it a week prior to last basho and could not train properly. He lost on day one by susoharai to Endou. "My body not only did not respond well but my attack was weak and that was not good. I also lost my grip, which I had difficulties getting in the first place.. 35 years old? Well, it feels like that. When I was 20, I thought I could probably make it to 34-35, so I'm quite amazed I'm still here. There is a feeling of the changing of the guards. The younger guys are coming up strongly and this will lead to the future. The feeling is "NEXT!!". They have to persevere," he added. Regarding Terunofuji, who he has faced in training at Tokitsukaze beya: "I saw he was gambarizing well and think that is good. He has said it himself, but I think he has matured and become an adult.." Edited August 24, 2020 by Kintamayama 5

Kintamayama 45,530 Posted August 25, 2020 (edited) Takakeishou is feeling much better and his injured knee seems to have healed. "My injured knee has gotten much better and I have a sense of anticipation inside me," he said. He has resumed doing butsugari. "I went kyujo regretfully last basho and I want to do well.. I don't strut around when I get good results and don't get down in the doldrums when they aren't that good. I just want to give it my all this year," he added. He has not won the yusho in his six bashos as Ozeki. "It might be bad form to say this, but I do want to get a yusho.." he summed. Kintamayama 45,530 Posted August 25, 2020 (edited) "I want to get the yusho in Aki, " declared Asanoyama today. Last basho he screwed up his yusho chances towards the end and lost on days 13 and 14 to lower rankers.. "After getting double digit wins that was an important stage, but losing two in a row just showed how weak I was.." he explained. His Oyakata Takasago will turn 65 in December and will retire from the Kyokai. "It would be befitting if I win back to back yushos and get promoted, just in time for my oyakata's retirement.. Not much time left. Not much time. I will be repeating that relentlessly to myself,"said Asanoyama. Edited August 25, 2020 by Kintamayama 7

Jemuzu 34 Posted August 25, 2020 Quite a difference when Takakeisho is calling it bad form to talk about winning the yusho, and then Asanoyama comes right out and declares he’s looking for two yusho and a Yokozuna promotion, no less

Godango 1,015 Posted August 26, 2020 Good to hear some confidence back out of Takakeisho. I hope it's legit and not just bravado.
Kintamayama 45,530 Posted September 1, 2020 Injured Yokozuna Hakuhou (right knee) has yet to resume training, raising fears he will not be ready for the basho. He prefers to be treated for the injury and heal completely, after undergoing endoscopic surgery in August. He is doing basic exercises but is far from doing the fundamental suriashi and shiko. 3
Kintamayama 45,530 Posted September 2, 2020 Asanoyama trained with the 4 Makushita guys from his heya today -10 bouts. He usually starts going for degeiko at this point, but since degeiko is not allowed, he will have to do with this for the time being. Still, he was upbeat. "These guys are aspiring to become sekitori so it's a great incentive for them. I also did my best not to lose. My duty is to take these 4 guys and help them climb higher!" he said.
Churaumi 745 Posted September 2, 2020 (edited) I suppose the "no degeiko" rule will benefit Kise, Isegahama, and Kokonoe beya, since they have more sekitori or former sekitori that can still put up a decent fight. After all, they can only be as good as their training competition. Keeping within the topic, I would expect Miyagino and Michinoku rikishi to suffer a bit, not having yokozuna to train with. Edited September 2, 2020 by Churaumi Missed a bit of my own ideas.

Sadogatake is also in very good shape. They have 5 sekitori.
Seiyashi 4,108 Posted September 2, 2020 Wasn't there a post or thread somewhere tracking the results of multi-sekitori vs single-sekitori stables from the last basho? My general impression is it didn't seem to make much difference; Sadogatake went 3-2 for example.

Healing completely from an injury before resuming training makes complete sense. Unfortunately, that situation can only apply to a yokozuna. Far too many rikishis with injuries rush back into competition because of fear of dropping too far down the banzuke. It can take quite a while for a severe injury to heal and it takes an enormous amount of patience for both the rikishi and his oyakata to let those injuries heal completely. A couple of recent examples are Terunofuji and Ura.--but they're quite rare. As for Hakuho, I'm sure that missing a basho while he heals won't mean very much. I doubt very much if it will cause fear of anyone coming anywhere near his record of 44 yushos. His closest rival is Kakuryu who is 38 yushos behind him. In the military service, it's called "rank having its privilege" and it means being able to do things others of lower rank are unable to. The same can be said of the greatest yokozuna ever. Kintamayama 45,530 Posted September 3, 2020 Takakeishou is getting ready for his "wedding basho." "I gave it my all when I was alone, so nothing concrete has changed, but the feeling that I want to get a good result is definitely there. Still, I'm happy to receive the support and blessings of my fans and of the people around me. Gained 14 kilos? I had stuff like my cellphone in my clothes so the weighing wasn't accurate.. I don't feel I put on any weight. I'm mostly eating horse meat for the proteins and fat. It's easy to eat and it's tasty. But not only horse meat - I'm eating all kinds of stuff well.." At training today, no sumo, but yes butsugari. Injured left knee that caused him to go kyujo last basho? "I think it's OK.. No degeiko? We have some scary guys at the heya so I want to prepare well and gambarize!" 4 3

Kintamayama 45,530 Posted September 4, 2020 (edited) Yokozuna Kakuryuu has not started doing sumo in training, with nine days to go till the basho starts. "I feel I better start getting back in shape a bit.. I'd like to get back in shape, and like I always say, when I enter I hope to get a good result.." he said. He talks about life at home with nowhere to go. "I'm mostly putting the kids (three) to bed. I do what needs to be done whenever my wife is too busy.," he explained. He now spends a lot of time at home. A LOT of time. He is famous for following many sports, foreign and local, on TV. "I haven't been watching much at home lately, as whenever I turn the TV on, the kids want to watch their favorite shows," he said. (Psst.. get another set. You can afford it..) Wild prophecy: The 2 Yokozunae shall not be entering.. entering.. entering.. Edited September 4, 2020 by Kintamayama 3
