Tokitsukaze under house arrest

Recommended Posts

Tokitsukaze's eldest son Sakamoto Hirokazu will be entering sumo in May. He is the captain of the Sanbongi Agricultural High school sumo club. He will be graduating in March and will join Tokitsukaze beya. No plans to change the plans after all this. He won the Hakuhou Cup when he was in the fourth grade. He was part of the team that won the national Junior high championships as well. 1.75./130 kilos. Didn't get his age, but third year of high school so probably 18-ish? Seems like the real deal to me.

The special compliance committee questioned Tokitsukaze Oyakata’s wife as to the particulars of the Oyakata’s comings and goings for close to two hours today. “Can’t say anything..”said Chairman Aonuma, if that’s his name. The Oyakata is slated to be interviewed in the coming days.

I'll bet that was uncomfortable all around the table.

Sorry, I know you meant it seriously, too, but it could turn out funny in a cringey sort of way, especially if some of the more colorful characters were doing the questioning.

I don't know what the relationship is like at the Tokitsukaze household, but I can't imagine a set of circumstances where she's happy he got seen entering a red-light district. At a minimum it's just a bad look for him, and at a maximum there's what my wife would do to me under those circumstances. In which case, Churaumi would suddenly vanish from the forum.

I don't recall who's on the committee, but based on some of the outrageous things said by some of the oyakata:  Wife: "He was going to a massage parlor and staying all night!"  Old boy: "Well, a man has to be a man sometimes, after all ... "

To which Mrs. Churaumi would say, "Sometimes I have to stab a cheating husband sometimes, after all..."

"I think we will discuss this on the 22nd, " said Shibatayama Oyakata regarding Tokitsukaze Oyakata’s punishment. We heard Tokitsukaze intends to leave anyway and has chosen Magaki Oyakata to take over the heya. "We haven't decided what his punishment will be yet so we Shirley don't know how the inheritance thing will pan out, " he added.

The Compliance Committee met today to decide Tokitsukaze oyakata's fate, and handed in their decision regarding the punishment to Hakkaku rijicho, although the retirement papers being handed in has somewhat caused this to be a moot thing. The final decision on how to handle this bardak will be made at the rijikai on February 22nd. His resignation papers  notwithstanding, some problems have surfaced concerning who will inherit the heya and if his resignation will be accepted at all. "It's a difficult  problem and members of the committee were divided in their views. I think the retirement will be accepted in the end," said an unnamed committee member.

Thanks for adding the term "bardak" to my vocabulary. It sounds more polite than "clusterf*ck" and saves me having to use the shift key to insert an asterisk.

Exquisite usage, Sir!  Not only the later meaning of "brouhaha' or (see above post), but suggests the older meaning of a "brothel".  I knew the reference to a "Mah Jongg" parlor was a code word!

It's actually a Russian word originally but is widely used in Hebrew as well. There is another word, balagan, which also comes from Russian and is a basic Hebrew word (one of the first you will learn since it aptly describes what goes on daily here...) which means the same without the brothel connotation..

Very off-topic, but in Greek there is a lovely expression meaning balagan that literally means "the prostitute's railing". It comes from before the war, when a very popular prostitute's clients would tie gifts to her on her front yard fence, which was comprised of waist-high thin rails. When the locals would wake up in the morning, they would look at the fence and see all sorts of things tied up to the rails, a real clusterf*ck as Tigerboy would say, hence the expression.

The woman's name was Sonia; her house was on what is now Alexandras avenue in the neighbourhood of Gyzi. Her legacy, besides the slang, includes Sonia Café at the location of the famous railing, and the nearby Sonia bus stop.

To no-one's surprise, the rijikai has decided on a recommendation of expelling Tokitsukaze, effective as of today. Ex-Tosayutaka will take on both the name and the stable.

Not that I have any vested interest in this particular choice, but I am wondering how in the world they decided that Tosayutaka would be taking over Aogiyama and Toyonoshima?

It seems to have been Tokitsukaze’s decision. Maybe too early for Toyonoshima and Aogiyama just doesn’t want it.

I seem to also remember reading that there is the Tokyo University of Agriculture connection between Tosayutaka and Tokitsuumi which also stretches to the former oyakata Ozeki Yutakayama.

"He didn't show even the tiniest bit of remorse," said the Compliance Committee report. This concludes this saga.

To be clear, "retirement recommendation" means that they're recommending the retirement to him, not to themselves. It's now technically a voluntary departure of his, he's not being expelled. He wouldn't be getting any severance package at all on a dismissal. (And I'm pretty sure he could litigate against the 30% cut, too, but he won't.)

An interview with Tokitsukaze from end of January was posted on YT, there he expressed his deep regret - towards his deshi -  the moushi wake nai feeling that Shibatayama and the compliance bunch didn't feel, Shibatayama told he only said sumimasen (sorry). Tokitsukaze thinks his 2 sons some day will join Tokisukaze-beya, he told that at that point 3 new recruits were to join for March, among them his first son.

How long until he launches his chain of 24-hour Mahjong and Massage parlours?

Probably soon. Or else he runs out of money and won't be able to frequent one himself.
