I'm used to seeing mascots associated with sports and sports teams, but whenever one of these rikishi goes to meet a governmental leader there always seems to be the official mascot for the town/prefecture nearby. Having seen Demon Kakka in full get-up as a pall bearer at a prominent rikishi's funeral, it would surprise me not a bit to find out these mascots participate in town and prefecture meetings in their outfits. NHK's Begin Japanology did a show on this (poor quality sound, and all text backwards!):

Akinomaki 40,421 Posted October 10, 2020 Shodai yesterday after returning to Uto, for the first time visited the grave of local yokozuna Shiranui, the only yokozuna that got demoted to sekiwake (at a time when yokozuna was not a rank yet and just an ozeki with an extra title). A descendant (80) told him: "Get to yokozuna and use the Shiranui style dohyo-iri!" (which is in effect not by this, the 8th yokozuna, but his deshi - but there are many different tales about Unryu and Shiranui style). Shodai: "First of all kachikoshi as ozeki." o Afterwards he went to his old middle school. Today he returned to Tokyo 3

Kintamayama 45,093 Posted October 20, 2020 Shoudai is still living at the heya, three weeks after his Ozeki promotion. He has been looking to rent a place within walking distance of the heya. "If I move out, it will be a bother for my tsukebito.. It's good to move out, but I feel sorrow when thinking about it.. If the heya will have another sekitori I will be forced to move out, as there are no more rooms left at the heya.." There are only 4 rooms at the heya, and he and Yutakayama are in two of those. One room is now an "emergency isolation room", in case anyone gets infected by the virus. There are some up and coming Makushita rikishi at the heya like Tokisakae (7 east). "I hope he drives me out soon.. " There is a chance Hakuhou may call him out in the next two days of the Kyokai training camp. "Yup.. I feel I've got to get back in good shape quickly, I guess" he summed. 1

Doesn't that still leave 1 spare room? Or is he saying it would be desirable to have more spares so sekitori can immediately move in?

I think the 4th room is the large one where all the plebs sleep together, farts, snoring and sleep talking and all.
RabidJohn 1,777 Posted October 20, 2020 Shodai's irrepressible negativity and his unerring ability to see the downside in every situation keeps putting me in mind of Marvin the paranoid android. 1
Kintamayama 45,093 Posted October 26, 2020 (edited) Shoudai spoke to the press today on condition of anonymity. The car subject resurfaced. Shoudai wants to remain Shoudai. "The heya is close by, it's a ten minute walk. Until now, except for when it rained, I walked to the Kkan. I'm planning on continuing with that. While I'm walking, my body becomes relaxed and it gives me a boost.. It's not exactly a routine, but I'd like to keep it up. If it becomes inconvenient, I'll think about changing it mid-basho," he explained ( visions of hundreds of women chasing him in the street, throwing their undergarments at him?) It's the "end of the year " basho, although it won't be held in Kyushu as usual. He has 45 wins on the year and has a chance of being the winningest rikishi of the year. "I want to end the 15 days without injury and if I have the chance of getting the most wins, well.. It's the last basho of the year so I want my presence to be felt even more than usual," he summed. Time to fondle my Chrystal Balls. Barely 8-7. Edited October 26, 2020 by Kintamayama 1
