Tigerboy1966 1,474 Posted November 21, 2020 Let's go back almost exactly three years to Wednesday 22 November 2017 (that's Saint Cecilia's day for Catholics and Foo Fighters fans). Hakuho looks to be cruising to zensho yusho when he is pitted against sekiwake Yoshikaze on day 11. The match starts but Hakuho stops wrestling and Yoshi bulls him out and off the dohyo in about 2 seconds. Surely that should have been a matta? Hak glares at the gyoji, then raises his hand as if to signal mono-ii. He stands there for an ice age, switching his glare back and forth between the gyoji and the shimpan. He raises his hand again. The crowd are lapping it up. The officials are having none of it. Eventually he climbs back onto the dohyo, but gives one last mono-ii signal, before inclining his head a millimeter to the side, which is taken for a bow. It was the most graceless exhibition I've ever seen in sumo.

And we love him because pressumably he did not call the mono-ii because he lost, but because he felt the fans deserved better.

It was the most graceless exhibition I've ever seen in sumo. My take on that is that he was at 25 straight wins and was thinking of taking one last stab at the consecutive win record (with two Yokozuna out); I think he felt like he should have a chance to at least fight it out on the dohyo.

In a county match circa 1890 he walked onto the pitch to great applause and was promptly bowled out by the first ball that he faced. He simply replaced the bails, resumed his guard and continued the innings, commenting to the umpire something along the lines of "They have come to see me bat today, let us not disappoint them". I think that Hakuho was trying something similar, but sumo is not cricket.
Tigerboy1966 1,474 Posted November 21, 2020 Now let's rewind back to Sunday 27 March 2016, the last day of the Haru basho in Osaka. With a record of 13-1 Hakuho needs to win his final match to claim the yusho, otherwise he will face a play-off against Kisenosato the darling of the Japanese fans. His opponents is his fellow Mongolian yokozuna Harumafuji. The pair hunker down as the crowd practically wet themselves in anticipation of an epic yotsu struggle. And then... Hak pulls a massive henka, and Harumafuji just goes scooting out of the ring. Hak applied a light slap to the shoulder as Harumafuji plunged past him, allowing the victory to be recorded as tsukiotoshi. In the words of the mighty Jason "Whaaat... Nooo! That is bogus! That is not cool... I hope they boo him during his interview."
Yamanashi 3,903 Posted November 21, 2020 In High School, Hakuho once let out a fart and blamed it on a classmate.

If Hakuho farted he would have no need to apologise. because his intestinal gas smells of jasmine and rose petals. On the other hand, he was, as a teenager, an enormous Beavis and Butthead fan and used to engage in yak-tipping and marmot-baseball.

According to this article, he legitimately hunted them down and ate them. In tune with the current pandemic season, you could get actual plague just eating them. Yikes.
x77x 0 Posted November 23, 2020 (edited) the infamous hakuho forearm knockout? remember when he went on a stretch and did it all the time? what about the kisenosato shove and stare down for too many mattas... or when he shoots people into the crowd for no reason =P Edited November 23, 2020 by x77x

Someone please continue this and make Hak the Chuck Norris of sumo Back on the topic, yeah, the Yoshikaze incident was super not pretty. IIRC similar thing happened with Harumafuji who thought it was a matta while being bulldozed out by Giku (same basho or not far before that one?), but he didn't complain. Churaumi 745 Posted November 23, 2020 Remember a few years ago when Ichinojo beat him one tournament, then the next Hakuho muscled him out and then went puro resu and gave him the Iron Claw? I'll bet Ichinojo does.

Katooshu 3,331 Posted November 23, 2020 (edited) I can see it now: Hak sitting alone in a dark room, watching the Japanese media and public chat excitedly about Takakeisho winning in January to become yokozuna. He smiles slowly, camera zooming in, then breaks into maniacal, crazy laughter as he readies to enact his plan to squash their hopes with a dominant zensho yusho, dame oshi and elbows included for every Japanese hope. In the yusho interview he says how much he loves Japan, but is secretly plotting to turn the Kyokai into the Mongolian Sumo Association after his retirement, with a 1 Japanese per heya rule. sumojoann 1,268 Posted November 23, 2020 (edited) Here is a video showing Hakuho monoii'ng his own bout! It goes on to show other encounters with Yoshikase, including the time Hakuho hurled Yoshikaze out of the ring with unnecessary violence resulting in quite a bit of blood on Yoshikaze's face and chest. sumojoann 1,268 Posted November 23, 2020 (edited) Here's a a video showing the infamous face-shove Hakuho gave Ichinojo after Ichinojo was already defeated. Edited November 24, 2020 by sumojoann 1
sumojoann 1,268 Posted November 23, 2020 (edited) Hilarious and very satisfying video showing not ONE but TWO stare-downs between Hakuho and Kisenosato plus Hakuho getting defeated!! The first stare-down starts at 3:15 & lasts for 35 full seconds and the second stare-down starts at 4:45 & lasts 25 seconds. The crowd goes absolutely crazy, especially after Kisenosato defeats Hakuho. They were still cheering and screaming while the Yobidashi for the next bout was on the dohyo trying to sing. sumojoann 1,268 Posted November 23, 2020 Who can forget the infamous bout where Hakuho kachiagied Miyogiryu's face (not jaw), causing a near knockout. Not to be content with knocking him down so violently, as the back of Miyogiryu's head is about to hit the dohyo, Hakuho shoves him in the jaw to make him fall faster. Miyogiryu looked like a sack of potatoes. The smug look on Hakuho's face afterwards is sickening. As is his indifference to the injuries he has caused. I read somewhere that Miyogiryu had defeated Hakuho at the previous Basho and had the temerity to brag about it.
sumojoann 1,268 Posted November 24, 2020 Another hilarious encounter between Hakuho and Kiasenosato. A double matta followed by Hakuho henka'ing Kisenosato. Poor Kisenosato ends up covered in wet sand.
sumojoann 1,268 Posted November 24, 2020 This video, despite it's title, actually shows much that is bad about Hakuho's behavior. 1) Starting at 2:05, it shows the henka that Hakuho did to Harumafuji that was mentioned above. 2) Next, it shows Hakuho violently throwing Yoshikaze out of the ring, resulting in quite a bit of blood on Yoshikaze;'s face and chest. (This same bout was in a previous video I posted above). 3) Next, it shows a weird bout with Tochiozan. He starts off clapping his hands in front of Tochiozan's face followed by a henka. Tochiozan recovers from the henka, they fight but Tochiozan loses. Hakuho stands very close to Tochiozan with a strange smirk on his face, and then puts his hand on Tochiozan's shoulder and gives it a push. As Hakuho walks away, the smirk increases. Very weird. The whole time, even during the bout, Tochiozan has a wtf look on his face. 4) This is a much more detailed video of Hakuho injuring Miyogiryu. It is the same bout from a previous video I posted above, but this one shows it in show-motion from several angles.
sumojoann 1,268 Posted November 24, 2020 In this video, Hakuho was criticized for commenting during the Yusho interview that he would do what it took to see Harumafuji and Takanoiwa back on the dohyo again. This, of course, was inappropriate because it wasn't his decision to make. In addition, he exhorted the crowd to join him in cheering "Banzai!" three times. This word makes some people uncomfortable because of its association with World War 2. The "Banzai!" cheering starts at 5:20.
sumojoann 1,268 Posted November 24, 2020 Hakuho was criticized for showing poor judgment for leading the crowd in the traditional "sanbon-jime" hand-clapping ceremony during his Yusho interview. This ceremony is normally performed at the very end of Senshuraku. Hakuho defended himself by saying he just wanted to rouse the crowd at the end of the Heisei era. The hand-clapping starts at 5:37.
