Ozekis and Yokozunas for January 2022 - Here we go again!

2020 was a weird year.

Will the two current Yokozunas manage to stay on the banzuke for another year? How about the Ozekis? Two will start the year kadoban - the other is on a tsuna run. 

Are there future Ozekis waiting in the wings?

A little bit confusing: The second question is: "Who will be ranked as Yokozuna on the January 2021 banzuke?" but one option is "There will be no Yokozunas on the 2022 banzuke."

Same thing with the last question just vice-versa now: Question is about the Jan 2022 banzuke and last option is "..NO Ozekis ranked on the January 2021..."

Which one is it now? Mildly confused

I think the services of a fortune-teller may be needed to predict what happens in the next year or so, if this year is anything to go by.

When Terunofuji returned to Juryo I thought he'd be lucky to get back to mid-maegashira but now who knows?  If his knees hold out he can certainly get back to ozeki.

That seems a bit many new yokozunas for just one year (especially knowing Terunofuji still has to make ozeki and Hakuho is still out there)  .

I wasn't sure if Asanoyama should have been promoted...

although Takakeisho being promoted after January and Terunofuji/Asanoyama having a double promotion after September isn't impossible.

In the first tournament of 1942, Haguroyama was promoted, and in the first of 1943 Akinoumi/Terunokuni were promoted... There were 2 basho a year so that is still in the span of 3-4 basho.

If i recall correctly the yokozuna sequence of Kotozakura, Wajima, Kitanoumi also took place in a 6 basho timespan, but i could be wrong on that one.

I see everybody has given up on Mitakeumi. I still have hopes he'll get Ozeki one day, but maybe he'll be like the Kaio of Komusubi/Sekiwake. 5 yusho and 60 basho as K/S without reaching Ozeki....

Kaio got four of his five yushos at the rank of Ozeki. I think you mean Yokozuna.

 

I see what you mean now. You are saying that Mitakeumi might rack up five yushos in his career whilst not progressing further than Sekiwake on the banzuke.

I'm going to be positive and assume everyone stays vaguely healthy:

Shodai holds on by the skin of his teeth, Takayasu repromoted at end of year after claiming first yusho. Asanoyama gets 6 double digit KK but no yusho. Mitakeumi gets another yusho but fails on yet another Ozeki run.

Hakuho and Kakuryu will both retire this year. Takakeisho and Asanoyama will pull each other up to yokozuna. Ozeki and Shodai will be the great barriers to rikishi trying to move up. Bonus predictions are Takakeisho makes yokozuna first, and Daieisho will be working toward ozeki this time next year.

With the competition being quite open, I vote for no yokozuna after Hakuho and Kakuryu retire : each major contenders cutting each other's runs.
I even leaned towards demoting Asanoyama after Hatsu because his shoulder injury seems to bother him still, but I figured he could squeeze 8 wins against Maegashiras, then carry on all year.

Kak won't finish another basho, Hak will win another yusho but will be retired by the end of the year, Takakeisho will get the rope, Asanoyama and Shodai will hold their spots and will be joined by Takanosho and Daiesho at Ozeki (and Asanoyama will get the rope early in 2022)
