Favorite Songs

Recommended Posts

So many songs have stayed with me throughout the years, starting in the 1950s.  Please forgive me in advance for listing so many.  They all have meaning to me and have affected me emotionally in different ways and for different reasons.  Some are inspiring, some are funny, others are sad and a few make me want to get up and dance!

Surprisingly, my favorite is a fantastic bluesy version of Eric Clapton's "After Midnight".  It was used in a Michelob beer commercial in 1988!! lol

I didn't have time to post any more links but if you are interested in hearing any of the songs, most or all should be on Youtube.

Favourites are subject to change. And there are so many, many great songs out there, it's impossible for me to say "this is the one".

The last months i've been listening to Unleash the Archers a lot and the first thing to do in the office is to put on my BT headset and BLAST one of these songs. They're fun, they make me smile and they give me more energy than any coffee in the world.

Unleash The Archers!  You're right about the energy.  They remind me of Blue Oyster Cult: hooky melodies, lots of earnest energy, and in the back of your head you wonder if they're secretly a parody group (they are just not as brooding as the other bands!).  I cracked up when reading their Wikipedia page: one of their subgenres is "melodic death metal" -- to distinguish it from the unmelodic kind, I guess.

I swear I've heard "Holy Mountain" by Chris Amott before, but I can't imagine where.  Great experience.

The whole album is excellent! (Laughing...)

You have to watch "Tonight we Ride". The whole video is an idle speed, no budget version of Mad Max and you can see from their faces, they know how abysmal ridiculous they look like. The next time they're in Germany, i'll try to visit one of their shows.

Watched it: great.  Solidifies my original take -- they're having a hell of a time with the Mad Max theme.  The singer has a tremendous range.  And they're Canadian, with names like Brittney and Scott(Laughing...).

The above song affected me like a physical shock; I still have no idea how a singer could be that talented.

I've always been a Queen guy. Can't really decide which songs are my favourites but I'd say I enjoy more their 70's songs.

Recently I'm into Deep Purple/Rainbow -- Gates of Babylon is one of those songs I play more often than the others. It's just epic, breathtaking.

When I have the time someday I'd love to come back to this thread (and another one about music in other countries) to have a listen to the seemingly excellent suggestions here and there. Listening to more music and watching old sumo videos are among the things I hope to have more time to do, but alas (Laughing...)

I'll comment all the above posts later on as there's so much to say !

The Gathering - Waking Hour : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUKBV8M_XXE

Devin Townsend - Supercrush : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZLgXOz1om4

Of course, everybody knows it but I like this version featuring the playful good old Stéphane Grappelli on violin.

Easily could prepare a list with 100+ songs and tunes. But some of my absolute favorites are listed below:

Fleetwood Mac - Rhiannon  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgmRb3MlpHQ

My all-time favorite song since I heard it first in 1976. Stevie Nicks is incredible in this live version. Band co-founder Mick Fleetwood later recalled, "her Rhiannon in those days was like an exorcism”.

Steely Dan - Do it again  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmdiKePVUy8

Donald Fagen & Walter Becker had created this timeless masterpiece in 1972.

Led Zeppelin - Kashmir  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzVJPgCn-Z8

Published in 1975 – The song combines different rhythmic meters: the guitar riff is in triple meter, while drums are in quadruple meter. Brilliant.

Isaac Hayes -Theme from ”Shaft”  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q429AOpL_ds

Even cooler than Richard Roundtree as “John Shaft” in 1971.

Kraftwerk - Trans Europa Express  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWSceMtAjPw

Just genius. Unfortunately the full German version from 1977 is not available on YT

Booker T. & the M.G.’s - Melting Pot  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nsc4u4-8Nns

Fantastic title song from their last Stax album, also called Melting Pot, in 1971

Miles Davis - All Blues  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRBgy43gCoQ

First released in 1959 on the influential album “Kind of Blue”. Just close your eyes and listen.

Can – Halleluwah  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dZbAFmnRVA

German “Krautrock” at its best. Their album “Tago Mago”, one of the best albums ever, was released in 1972. Drummer Jaki Liebezeit (1938-2017) in my eyes/ears was the best drummer ever right after John Bonham.

Enjoy!

I first came across them in 2010.  Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead scored the movie of Murakami's "Norwegian Wood" and included four Can songs in the tracklist   They were some of the group's more "commercial" songs, as I discovered.

Great performances.  Also, "What a Wonderful World" by ol' Satchmo ... stunning.  And Nat King Cole's "Sweet Lorraine": singing while playing the piano side-saddle:-O.

@Ganzohnesushi Thumbs up on 99% of your choices (I'm not a big fan of Kraftwerk).

@chishafuwaku Some good old classics, how not to like?

@sumojoann Plenty of good stuff in there !

@Yamanashi Thumbs up on 100% posted so far. Plenty of memories with George Benson just to name one.

@Benihana I need to listen more of Unleash The Archers. These 2 I heard didn't "hook" me enough. If you have other songs, I'd be happy to try.

The "Alma llanera" was very good; I had to hang in there awhile until the singers kicked in.

Just listen to the full albums on YT. The older stuff is great, too, but Apex and Abyss really stand out as concept albums which tell the story of "The Immortal", who is mentioned the first time in Awakening. Sadly there aren't that many live recordings, but what's there shows, they are no band that's only good in the studio.

Kraftwerk

I always liked their 'Das Model' song, it's very iconic.  Years ago i discovered they had also done some heavy metal that was very similar to the style of a later band i used to listen to called 'Kyuss', i thought that band was purely original as a teenager growing up, little did i know Kraftwerk had done it already way back in 1971.

I wish I knew more Finnish.  It's hard to believe this guy played a character with missing teeth in dozens of movies.  Now look at him! And what a resonant voice.

This video could be titled An Intimate Evening with Odin.
