Totally missed the posts about Honegger, by far my favorite classical composer.

I first heard his Symphony No. 3 live, and it completely blew my mind. The third movement has the loudest and most cacophonic crescendo I ever heard in classical music of that time, and after that ultimate noise comes a piccole flute with a flickering melody that always brings me close to tears.

Excellent!

I really liked the shots of the conductor,  Mariss Jansons, and read his Wiki biography.  Born in Riga under the Nazis to a conductor father and a opera diva mother.  Followed his father to Leningrad; he wasn't allowed to take a conducting position with von Karajan in Berlin, but later took various positions in Europe and America.  Well worth a read.

This brings back memories. I haven't listened to Honegger's third Symphony for years, but it used to impress me thoroughly. The rest of this sunday evening will be devoted to renew my encounter with this overwhelming piecec of music.

Now that the basho's over, here is a catchy chorus !

Coheed and Cambria - Ten Speed (Of God's Blood & Burial)

I've never heard a single word about this band; I look at the video and there's an ad for a Coheed and Cambria concert about 100 miles from me.  Life is actually more unpredictable than art.

Or maybe YT know your location and sent that specific ad to you..... which is scary to me!

Natsukawa Rimi's Asadoya Yunta is one of my favorites. I don't go much for pop music but that one's a great version.

The Boom's Shima Uta was everywhere when I lived in Okinawa, so much it was weird not to hear it when I moved.

I was there when BEGIN released the album with Shimanchu nu Takara and Oji Jimman no Orion Biru.

Ue o mite arukou has been all over, but it reminds me of doing karaoke there when I surprised my local lady friend by picking it, then singing 4 P.M.'s English lyrics, switching to Japanese for a verse. Took me forever to learn it phonetically, should have just put the time in to actually learning Japanese. The lyrics are not that complex, bro.

Linda Linda by the Blue Hearts lives rent-free in my brain.

Ghost is by far my favorite Western band. The lyrics are a little style over substance but the songwriting and production is top notch. Tobias Forge and his earworms are next level. Dance Macabre, Square Hammer, and Miasma are my top three.

Years ago I ran across a quote from Honegger that I had forgotten until now.  Bemoaning the lack of interest in 20th Century composers by 20th Century listeners, he said:

"The public doesn't want new music; the main thing it demands of a composer is that he be dead."

I'm going to sound like a barbarian without a doubt, but i don't think that's such a bad criteria when it comes to classical composers :-D  I've heard a lot of tired drivel from supposed up-and-coming names.  Even some of the well established ones i honestly think are very mediocre, the famed Einaudi for example, has had the (fair imo) criticism levelled at him, that he makes classical music for those who don't like classical music.

Ultimately it's all down to taste isn't it, few things are more likely to divide people than what they want from music, even among those who like the same genre, they'll still have differing opinions of artists within it.  I'll finish with an even more outrageous and subjective statement, and that is one of the very few great composers left that are alive doesn't even make classical music, he makes electronic music, and he's called Richard D James.

We're not in songs anymore but... five "monsters" playing together? How does it sound? One of the best performances live ever. Energy and power all over the place, each one of the artists mastering his instrument. It's been years since last time I heard that one but it "found a way" back to me lately.

To those who don't like Jazz don't even click on the link, you'll waste your time.

As we'll all be focused soon on Natsu basho let's hear something before then. Love the instrumental part from 5'00 (among other things and lyrics are good too).

I may be late to the game, but I just got a fire hose of stunning jazz/pop singing from a lady named Laufey (Icelandic father, Chinese mother).  She composes and sings in a kind of jazz/bossa nova style -- surprisingly deep and mature for a 24-year-old.  A sample of her work:

Apologies to you-know-who -- Iceland is as close as I can come to Finland.:-(

I was (pretty darn old) and two months old when I heard about this guy; I was more shocked when I found out he was the lead guitar for G&R around 2001.  It's not the bucket that surprises me, it's the white mask.

I didn't know that Buckethead was ever in Guns 'n' Roses!  I was a big fan of the band around 1994 when they toured with Metallica (Use Your Illusion Tour).  My husband & I saw them in Houston at the Astrodome and in New Orleans at the Superdome.  Of course that was well before Buckethead joined the band.

Nice work. I only wish he wouldn't use autotune.

Are you sure he does? He's just as great live.

If you don't like growling this won't be easy for you. If you can go passed it though, you'll be rewarded. The music is really great and the lyrics.... This piece is just (Signofapproval...)

Insomnium - "Pale Morning Star"

What, another "melodic" Death Metal Band?

I like it!  Sort of like Hu meets DAZZLE VISION, and I'm glad for the subtitles so I didn't embarrass myself by thinking "Crap, I can't understand Finnish."

[Note: The Wolf Hunterz reacted to this song on YT two years ago.  Their take: "So powerful and sad!"

After stumbling onto Chocolate Planet, I checked their channel and found the videos of their group 美炎-BIEN - nice music, nice style, nice videos, nice titles - excellent humour https://www.youtube.com/@chocoplach/search?query="美炎-BIEN"

Due to the excellent title, Hanamizuki 鼻水木 for me is the best song - I won't link it here directly, might be offending to some.

naming background:

bi-en 鼻炎 is rhinitis, Hanamizuki 花水木 is flowering dogwood, with the term used for an air of romance -  鼻水 hanamizu is nasal mucus, especially in the allergy season
