Perhaps he means compact? As opposed to his body stretching out during the tachiai?

This sounds like one heck of an existential crisis.

Poor guy; he sounds like the main problem is between his ears.

Terunofuji faced Takarafuji and Terutsuyoshi today in training. "About 20-30 bouts..Still a long way to go till day one, so it's good if I take things slowly. If I prepare myself well as usual I can accumulate those wins one by one. If I fail, it will be due to my own inability, and if the results will be good, that would be good, is my feeling. I'm not thinking profound thoughts about the particulars too much. I haven't given much thought about joining the Kyokai's training sessions yet. I'll decide when the time comes," he said. Daieishou's yusho reminded him of when he got promoted to Ozeki when he was only 23. "I was the youngest joi at that time. A lot of the present joi are my age and that's an incentive. I was ranked higher than them at that time and with that in mind my pride is driving me these days.." he added. He got married a few days ago. "I really wanted to hold  a decent wedding ceremony and a  reception but due to the virus, I couldn't, but was able to have a nice ceremony and hopefully she was happy anyway. With all the noise it made, I have to get a good result.. She is being guided by my doctor as to my menu (diabetes) ," he added more. "I don't have anyone special I want to face next basho., Whoever my opponent is, all I can do is go all out!" he summed.

We always could create a new thread named "Preparations to become Y/O after Haru 2021"

Will he be joining the Kyokai's training sessions? "I've just started doing sumo training so I'll see what my situation will be," he answered.

Shodai is careful about entering the joint keiko at the sumo training institute, starting on the 20th (where Hakuho may await him), after his injury experience: "It would be could to take part, but I don't want to do anything unreasonable." http://www.tokyo-sports.co.jp/sports/sumou/2767338/

To be fair, Terunofuji has looked more like an ozeki than any of the incumbents since he got back into makuuchi, so an eminently understandable error, IMO.

Asanoyama fundamentalized today and did not enter the ring. He does, however, intend to take part in the Kyokai's training sessions. Today was his last training session before said sessions, as tomorrow is check-up day at the KKan for the rikishi. Thus far he has done sumo against the Makushita and lowers at the heya. "I was planning on properly doing the fundamentals today," he said. He had a personal trainer from last June till November who worked with him on building up his muscles three times a week. "That ended in November when I was injured.. Nothing special happened, but I've been having some thoughts," he explained. He says he has established his own training regimen and is sticking to it. He has been receiving all kinds of support from celebrities. Actress Rie Shibata  (from the same hometown of Toyama), actress Muroi Shigeru, and famous story teller Tatekawa Shiraku are all sending stuff (chicken meat) to the heya. Today, stuff arrived from Shibata. "It's really nice to be supported by people we see on TV. I think everybody at the heya is thrilled  I get personal messages from people like Shibata san as well. She says I inspire her when she sees me do sumo," he explained. It's a year since he was promoted to Ozeki. "An Ozeki seeks to win. He's at the top of the banzuke, but still number two. If I don't get the yusho there will not be any Yokozuna talk. It's a difficult situation, but if I don't go with the feeling that I need to win, I can't go any higher. As for the Kyokai training sessions, I won't be counting the wins or losses - I'll be treating it as a rare opportunity to face other sekitori during the  Corona virus times. I'd like to go about it doing proper keiko and avoiding injuries!" he summed.

Shibata Rie is a ubiquitous actor in TV and movies, usually appearing with her trademark toothy smile and oval glasses.  Mostly used as a character actor/comedy relief; she's a real pro.

Shoudai trained at home today against Makushita and under heyamates. "I had about 15 bouts. Granted, they were Makushita opponents, but I was attempting to do my kind of sumo - first step, stance etc.." he said. He said he would not be participating in the Kyokai's training session (begins tomorrow) at least at the beginning. He has yet to train against Makuuchi heyamate Yutakayama. "In any case I will be focusing on training. I may join in the second half of the session. The best thing for me is to participate, but at this point, it's too early for me to be facing other sekitori.. I haven't even faced Yutakayama and truth be told, I'm a bit scared.." he confessed. There is still the Tokitsukaze oyakata story that needs to be solved. Shoudai revealed that the oyakata is still coaching them, even today. "He is trying not to cause us worry as best as he can. All we can do is patiently await the final decision regarding him. There really is no reason to change the content of the keiko. It would be good if we carried on as usual. , " he added. The Tokitsukaze lads had a great basho in January - 12 of the 15 rikishi got their kachikoshi. "The young guys moving up the ranks en masse makes us happy as well and makes for good training. It's a good process and I hope we can preserve that," he summed.

Takakeishou trained today at his heya's new premises. Fundamentals, butsugari. He blew his tsuna run last basho big time and is facing Haru basho as kadoban. "Last basho will never come again. I can only try to turn things around and give it my all, " he stated emphatically. This is now the fourth different place he trains at, counting from when he was at  Takanohana beya. "The content of the training and the things I need to do are unchanged. The keiko-ba is wide and you can even move your body outside of the dohyo, and that's nice.." he added.

Ozeki Shoudai trained at home today under the watchful eyes of his new Oyakata. "I don't want anyone to say that our results are bad because we now have a new Oyakata. I shall gambarize so it won't happen," he said. He has started training against Yutakayama this week. Today, he was 8-1 against him. "I still think my sumo sense and my body are not in sync yet. I have to do more bouts," he summed. He did not take part in the Kyokai keiko, saying he's not ready yet.

That fulfills their yokozuna duties for the basho and they can both stay home properly and sip beers, correct?

Shoudai trained at home today with Yutakayama, 10 bouts, won them all. "The new Oyakata is letting us go about our business calmly. I am very grateful to him," he said.  Terunofuji is going for an Ozeki run. They are classmates and have trained a lot in the past. Although Shoudai has been Ozeki for three bashos  he will try to be the wall. "{We're the same age so I feel i do not want to lose to him, but my thoughts  about myself leave me no place for thinking about others..I'm just telling myself it would be good to beat him," he explained. At the moment he is struggling with hay fever. He has been suffering for three years now. "My eyes are burning.. I have a ventilator at home turned on on 'hay fever' mode., " he summed. The reporter adds that he now faces an invisible opponent as well.

"I'm in!" declared Kakuryuu today.  He is moving on nicely with his preparations. He started  training against Kiribayama yesterday and faced him fifteen times today as well. "I'm able to train patiently. I am not bothered by anything. Everything will be alright if I properly care for myself as I go along.." he added. He has been a bit under the weather lately, though. He intended to take part in the Kyokai keiko for all 6 days but was absent from day 5. He was seen coughing a bit during today's training as well. "I have had this cold for the last three weeks. I want to get over it as soon as possible," he revealed. He has been taking medication and his nasal congestion is gradually subsiding. His appetite is fine and he has not lost any weight. "I'm able to do good keiko at this point. If I do it diligently I shall be fine," he summed.

does not sound good

Think that means he's not fine now, or that he is fine now and he will still be fine come tournament time?

I am more worried about a 3 week cold. I'm sure he's had negative COVID tests, because we'd know if a yokozuna got 'rona. But...let me put on my tinfoil hat...could this be a graceful way to back out of a tournament he's not quite ready for? If he's still got a communicable lung disease he surely could back out, right? And it would be for a new thing, not the traditional Kakuryu ailments. I hope he's healthy and shows up, and don't want him to wrestle sick. But...if he's been sick so long, shouldn't this have come up before Kyokai keiko? Or did it just not filter through my information sources?Am I just so bored in this particular time between basho that I have time to pontificate on not very elaborate conspiracy theories? It does feel like the last basho was months ago. More than two, anyway.

Kadoban Takakeishou was interviewed today after morning practice. He did some some sumo against Makushita and lower rikishi for the first time since the banzuke was announced. He plans to face Takanoshou, Takagenji and Takakento for some sekitori scrimmage. tomorrow. He is harboring a left ankle injury.  "It's necessary to go about it carefully and patiently and it won't do any good if you're scared. I have to properly check my moves and immerse myself in training. I just need to see not to deteriorate my situation and get better..No problem entering Haru. I'm OK. Of course I will be entering. It's important to enter in perfect shape so I will be training carefully and with thought and will hope to face each day in good condition," he said. He now weighs 166 kilos, 4 less than during the last weugh-in. "I changed my training regimen a bit so I guess that is the cause for the loss of weight.. I am eating properly! I hope to properly go back to getting in my groove and doing my own sumo. It's too bad we won't be going to Osaka, but these are the times. I want to do the kind of sumo that will show everyone a healthy me and give it my all !!" he summed
