Actually not so concise rikishi talk

Recommended Posts

Kitanofuji-san TV commentator on Chiyotairyuu: "He doesn't look healthy.  Looking closer, without the sideburns, he's become cute.. He doesn't look threatening.." On no Yokozunae: "BOOOORING!! Nothing we can do about it.. Looks like Terunofuji will be pulling everyone after him.." On Shoudai, before his bout, which he lost: "He should be very careful today. His tachiai is very high this basho and can be easily pushed around. " He was right. "See?? I don't want to boast but he does look nervous.." On Hokutofuji and the blood: "He's used to getting cut.."   On the NHK broadcast twitter: "Man, I'm tired! I was sleeping while listening to rakugo on the radio and when I awoke it was three thirty.. I kept listening to programs and sleeping and then I woke up at 6 am. I got up earlier than the roosters.." A character he is, this guy.

Hakkaku rijicho on Terunofuji: "The quality of his sumo is not good but he is concentrated and manages to get out of a bad situation. The knees seem to be OK.  The flow  (of wins) is good. " On Asanoyama: "His tachiai failed. He should work harder and harder on his sumo, otherwise his future doesn't look good.."

Takakeishou, winning: "I will be concentrating tomorrow as well. Every day, I face a different opponent. Today is another day, is what I'm thinking."

Asanoyama: "My sumo is not good. I need to reflect upon this. Today, I planned on slapping my opponent and stopping him in his tracks, but it didn't happen. I was able to turn things around at the dohyo edge. A win is more important than a loss. When I overthink things my body becomes stiff. I need to face each bout a day and if I can do my own sumo I'll be alright."

Takayasu: "I was patient. The quality is not bad and I'm in good condition physically. I want to stay in the yusho race till the final day by doing quality sumo!"

Midorifuji, fighting through pain, losing to Aoiyama and only started training a week before the basho due to a herniated back: "I aimed for the katasukashi but failed. I shouldn't be aiming for that.. I'm in pain, but everyone is in pain so it's fine.."

Shoudai, losing today: "My opponent got the first step on me, as I was a bit impatient and was stopped..The flow is not good. i need to change that at some point. '

Takakeisho appears to have won the day's Captain Obvious award.  Tomorrow he will perhaps tell us that every opponent is different, as is each day, and only the dohyo remains constant.

Enhou, leading Juryo unbeaten and starting the basho off with five consecutive wins for the first time in  his career: "My tsukebito called my attention to that yesterday and I had it in my head.. I think it's about accumulating wins day by day. I just came from under patiently. I feel I have been doing good up to this point. I've been moving forward well so my lateral moves and the general flow are good.  I am able to do my own sumo and I'd like to gambarize and continue doing my own sumo for the remaining days!"

Kadoban Ozeki Takakeishou suffered his second loss today: "I have to win, otherwise there is no point. I want to face tomorrow and deal with it again. It's a bout a day so I'd like to continue without thinking about what happened so far and treating it as if it was day one.."

Myougiryuu, unbeaten and the sole leader in Makuuchi: " I feel my sumo has its own flow, so that is good, right? I don't know why I'm doing so well, but I'll trudge on and gambarize!"

Shoudai, three losses already: "My end game at the dohyo's edge was poor. I did not handle it well. I have to reflect upon that. I'm slow at the tachiai and am having problems generating power. I have to make some changes. I've got to turn things around at some point. I feel I lack fighting spirit so it would be good if I can improve that."

Asanoyama, winning today: "I watched from dohyo-side as the two other Ozekis lost, but as soon as my name was called, I could only concentrate on myself. I was finally able to do my own brand of forward-moving sumo."

Hokutofuji, defeating another Ozeki today: "I patiently did my best not to get blasted out at once and went from under and under.. Injury? Nothing special. I'm fine. I won't go kyujo for this.. Bleeding is part of this contact sport so it is what it is. My body has been moving well this basho.  I'll be facing each day and gambarizing to avoid injury."

Reigning champion Daieishou got his first win of the basho today: "I was only thinking about moving forward. I still can't feel relieved yet, but I got that first win  so I will gambarize and try to ride that wave.."

The Brothers Tobizarov (Hidenoumi and Tobizaru) finally both won on the same day today.  "It seems that this 'brothers' thing interests the press mostly.. The 'other' people don't really take note of that. I don't discuss this on a regular basis, but as the older brother, I'd like to be ranked higher than him.." said Hidenoumi. "Oh, really (we both won for the first time today?) Yes.. I'm not especially aware of that.." added Tobizaru. Brotherly love is nice.

Chiyotairyuu suffered his third loss today, getting crushed by Aoiyama: "I'm sorry for showing unsightly sumo. I am in great shape. When I'm not  totally beaten, I'm doing well," he said. After his interview was over, it was Akiseyama's turn to be interviewed. Instead of leaving, he lingered in the background. Akiseyama was a bit flustered by this, smiling wryly, as Chiyotairyuu remained there for a good ten minutes.

202103180001002-w500_0.jpg

Akiseyama lost to Chiyoshouma today. "I'm a bit tired.. I want to gambarize for the remaining days," he summed.

Takayasu is 4-1: "I went at it by moving forward with the flow. I'm happy to have won by going forward. This is a basic juncture. I have been able to properly build a body (after his injuries) that will not suffer injuries. I have trained well with ex-Kisenosato before the basho. I have not seen my newborn daughter yet, but I intend to do so after the basho. That will be my impetus to do well.  I want to be involved in the yusho race till the end and I want to concentrate and do good sumo like I did today."

Kaisei beat Daiamami today: "I didn't have a chance to train against heavy opponents so it took me time. If I would have had a real hold on the mawashi I would have been able to yori with ease.  It's been a while since I started off so well so I'm happy. " He is an avid gamer and plays "Call of Duty" and was totally immersed in it when he was quarantined with his heya last basho. During the basho he plays till 10 PM and goes to sleep. "In any case, I go to sleep early. I have to cut down on my gaming time so I can sleep well - that is the most important thing.. Games are for relaxation.."

Concise my ass.

Day 6:

Enhou, 6-0 in Juryo: "I am able to go about it calmly. I did well today. I am much less nervous now and that is very important, but we're still on day 6. First i want a kachikoshi. I want to gambarize so I can win tomorrow!"

Terunofuji, 4 more wins for the magic 9 wins, which may not be enough: "I can only do what I can do. I was able to change my feeling after losing yesterday." Isegahama Oyakata: "The important thing for him is to move forward. Today he was able to go about it calmly."

Hakkaku rijicho: "Seeing Terunofuji win like that means that his knees are OK. If he had even a bit of apprehension he wouldn't be doing that. Asanoyama is doing his own sumo. The way he uses his right is very good. Shoudai's body seems to not be moving at the crucial moments. I wonder if he is the type that becomes depressed when he loses consecutive bouts."

Shoudai, in a rut, losing three straight. "The reason I lost is my weakness at the edge of the dohyo. I want to be able to show a strong yorikiri. I want to turn the tide somehow."

Myougiryuu, loses after five straight wins. "I was not able to follow through and win. I just couldn't.. I'll start again tomorrow.."

Takayasu, still with one loss: "I was able to grab the mawashi at the right time. All I'm thinking about is not to pull and to be patient. Yusho? First i need to get my kachikoshi. I will be piling up those wins one by one.""

Takanoshou, getting stronger with every basho: "I am getting stronger with every basho. Last basho I was pushed around a lot, so this basho I am going all out . I am able to go about it calmly."

Tsurugishou, winning after a torinaoshi, doing a rare henka in the first bout and then going all out with a quick first foot in the second and overwhelming Terutsuyoshi. "I wanted to change the flow and did a henka. I slipped, and it surprised me.. In the redo match I knew he had that henka in his mind and would not come at me sharply, so i went with a quick first step myself and won, just as I had planned. I feel I did well.."

Asanoyama with five wins. "I think i was able to properly attack and move forward today. I did bad sumo in the first three days. I was able to turn things around and do my own sumo. I am doing my best for the Osaka fans who are sad that the basho was moved to Tokyo. I know they are watching on TV so I will be doing my best to please them. I want to gambarize and do my own sumo tomorrow as well."

Kadoban Takakeishou: "I'm going about it day by day. Today was today and I was able to concentrate. Every day there is a result so I would like to gambarize tomorrow as well. If I concentrate on tomorrow's sumo it will continue into the next day. I want to do on and off properly " (He said on and off in English and no, I have no idea what he means. オンとオフをしっかりしてやりたい) Somebody? だれか? His remarks are divided into two types-he either states the glaring obvious, or he goes into a philosophical rant. Or it's my lousy Japanese.

That's it for today, enough. Takakeishou "ate my head" (Hebrew idiom meaning extensive nagging).

Deep sumo poetry from Takakeisho:

I will be concentrating tomorrow as well.

Today is another day, is what I'm thinking.

I want to face tomorrow

     and deal with it again.

Today was today

and I was able to concentrate.

If I concentrate on tomorrow

it will continue into the next day.

Day 7: A rare offering of some non run - of - the - mill quips today..

Ura, 5th win: " I think I should have lost today. I'm still injured, so I can't say this is an ideal situation. I think i was just lucky.. We've still got a long way to go (for a kachikoshi). I will be aiming for a kachikoshi and gambarizing to that end!"

Enhou, first loss after six wins: "I was OK till halfway through the bout, but he got my mawashi first and that was not good. I couldn't move as a result of that. I felt I was screwed. I was overthinking it.. The winning streak got inside my head a bit. I'm actually calmer now. I want to continue from here more focused."

Abi, back in action after the three basho suspension, a straight kachikoshi: "I'm happy. My sumo sense has returned for the most part.  There are people who allowed me to return to the dohyo again. I'm happy to hear the crowd clapping for me. I'm still growing. I want to concentrate so that I can do good sumo!"

Hidenoumi, third loss, to Terutsuyoshi.: "I was sure I had him but he sure can throw, and he threw me.. My brother doing better this basho? I want to be noticed more and will gambarize to that end!"

Chiyotairyuu faced Tsurugishou today. He is from Arakawa, Tokyo. Tsurugishou is from Katsushika. They went to the same sumo dojo as kids. Their past Makuuchi head to heads was 1-1. This time, the elder showed more stubbornness. The distance from Kokonoe beya to Tsurugishou's house is 10 seconds. "Yesterday, while I was walking outside near the heya, about 10 people shouted at me 'Hey, you're facing Tsurugishou tomorrow!!' I didn't want to know that.." said Chiyotairyuu.

Akiseyama, losing to Chiyonokuni today: "I thought I got my grip and was on the way to a win.. Every time, every time, I seem to be losing to these kotenages and their likes, so  if I remember to stop that next time, it may be a different story. I don't want anything to disrupt the rhythm of my life. I will eat well, sleep well, relax, wash my hands and gargle properly - this is what I'm feeling.."  (Geeeeeez..)

At 6:09 PM, a strong earthquake was felt in the Tohoku region. The Kokugikan shook as well.  The Makuuchi bouts were over and some rikishi were still hanging around the shitakubeya.  After the shaking died down, Meisei was doing online interviews with the press. "The whole shitakubeya was shaking. I thought everyone was moving at once.. I was startled," he said.

Terunofuji still on track for everything after winning today: "Yes, it went as I had imagined. I was able to grab his mawashi so it was good. I have been working very hard on perfecting that, so I'm able to do sumo as I planned. If I get a right hand grip it's good, but even if I don't, I think it would work out fine if I went with all my power."

Kadoban Takakeishou lost for the third time today: "All I can do is turn things around tomorrow. My sumo is off? No, it isn't. Tomorrow is another day of sumo, so all I can do is face that and do my best."

Daieishou gets his second win of the basho: "I think it was good today. I think was able to execute good sumo. I have had a lot of bouts where I couldn't move forward. Do I feel a bit different than last basho? Inside, I intend to feel the same, but it doesn't show in my sumo. That is me being weak. From here on i would like to properly  go about it till the end!"

Kiribayama, beating an Ozeki for the first time, 0-3 against Asanoyama till today: "I was happy to beat him for the first time. My body moved first. Kakuryuu gave me advice today - he told me to go with all I have."

Day 9:

Aoiyama, 800th Makuuchi bout: "I did not know that. Good thing I won..":

Akiseyama, losing to Aoiyama, three straight losses and more losses than wins: "I  am not really thinking about results, but he was heavy and strong. I never imagined he would be coming at me and pushing me away like THAT.."

Wakatakakage, blasting Meisei out and getting his third straight win and fifth win overall: "That was good sumo. My movement and the content are getting better.."

Meisei, missing out on a fourth straight win: "i was able to train well before the basho so  all I can do is concentrate and gambarize from here on just  like I have been doing until now!"

Ounoshou, seventh loss: "I was powerless, is all. I will do forward-moving sumo!"

Takanoshou, stopping his consecutive losses with good sumo: "I'm glad that I was able to do THAT kind of sumo. I want to continue like THIS tomorrow as well."

Asanoyama,  winning convincingly and stopping his consecutive losses: "I was intent on  properly  going about it differently. My mood has changed. I want to do forward moving sumo and get consecutive wins!"

Daieishou, blasting Shoudai out and winning his third straight bout: "My sumo has become better. I want to win as many bouts as I can, so I want to go on and concentrate on a bout a day."

Chiyonokuni, beating Tamawashi and remaining one step behind the leader: " I'm not thinking of the yusho race. I just want to continue without changing anything."

Enhou, throwing down Akua who is 60 kilos heavier via tsuriotoshi. "It's the first time I did that. I never did it in training either. I have no idea what happened there. I am totally surprised.."

Shoudai, fifth loss: "I didn't want to lose at the tachiai, but I stepped back.."

Takayasu, still the sole leader and kachikoshi: "I regret pulling, but slowly but Shirley  I am able to do good sumo. Tomorrow Takakeishou? I've been aiming for higher up and have been battling to achieve that. I really want to get a good result."

Day 10:

Aoiyama, stops his consecutive losses at three: "Those three losses were a good medicine for me. The content has improved. My thrusts came with the flow and the rest came at the edge of the dohyo.."

Tobizaru, beating Chiyoshouma by komatasukui and remains with three losses: "I was thinkin of attacking while doing my own sumo. I will be concentrating for the rest of the way."

Kotonowaka, losing to Ichinojou after beating him in their last two bouts: "I went forward and I was able to react, but in the end I was naive.  I would like to properly do sumo that goes all the way for the remaining five days !"

Wakatakakage, showing good sumo and beating Takarafuji, 4 straight wins: "I was able to move forward from under and that was good. I feel I need to be attacking first.."

Mitakeumi, back to equal wins and losses:"I want to keep in mind to properly move forward. I want to sleep well these next five days so I won't be staying up late.."

Ounoshou, makekoshi: "I'm simply weak. I need to regroup for the final remaining days and go all the way with my sumo."

Asanoyama , beating Takanoshou for his seventh win: "My opponent is a pusher thruster and he attacks from under.  I knew i had to properly stop him and stop him from getting in the first step.."

Takanoshou, 4th loss: "My arms were in place, but the next step didn't follow.. Now, I'm aiming for a kachikoshi and then double digit wins.."

Terunofuji, third loss, did not answer the press. "He was in too much of a hurry, He lost his calmness," said Hakkaku rijicho.

Takakeishou, 4th loss: "I have to properly win, otherwise it's not good. I lost because my sumo had bad parts. I can only prepare for tomorrow.."

Shoudai, winning but not happy: "I was pushed back today as well. My body is moving well, and yet.. I will be facing the rest of the basho without losing my concentration."

Shimanoumi, upsetting Terunofuji royally: "I had my head low and went for the armpits, concentrating and being patient. My first win over a sanyaku rikishi? I wasn't thinking about anything.. I just faced the bout as a challenger!"

Daieishou, evening his record: "My oyakata told me not to get stiff - it doesn't help. He told me to do my own sumo, to move forward. I will face tomorrow as if it's day one with spirits high!"

Takayasu remains the sole leader, two wins ahead of his followers: "I want today's win to lead into tomorrow. I am aiming for double digit wins and will go with that feeling. I was confident today and simply waited for my opponent to make a move. I was able to handle it calmly and that is good.. I see my daughter on the phone by video. I see her face and hear her voice. That gives me a lot of strength and pushes me to gambarize!"

Day 10 addendum:

Chiyotairyuu, beating Kagayaki and morning evening his record at 5-5: "That's how you make curry.. If you look at our record it looks like the bout wasn't between rikishi doing well.. There were seven kensho banners on the match, so thanks for that.."

Day 11:

Enhou, first Juryo rikishi to KK: "I screwed up the tachiai and could not recover and going by the content I lost.  I just gave it all I had and I have no idea what happened there. Call it intuition, I saw my opponent falling before I did. I  have been able to win bouts that I usually lose. As long as I don't give up at the edge of the dohyo, something might happen.. It's been a while since I got a kachikoshi (last January..) so I am relieved. I hope to grow these remaining four days and will face the bouts from here on. Kakuryuu.. I faced him only once and he blew me away, but I'm happy I had that one chance to face him. I remember that he was really strong and made me feel weak. I really wanted to challenge him again..  Still, I will remember that experience forever.."

Ura, back on the dohyo today after missing two bouts: "I couldn't win, I guess.. I think my movement was bad. I came back because I want to gambarize and get that kachikoshi. (needs two more wins). As for the injury, I'm fine. The two-days rest has me back in good shape. Only four days left so I shall gambarize!"

Terunofuji back on track for his Ozeki return journey: "First of all, I need those nine wins. From there I need to  gambarize and concentrate on each bout at a time. Kakuryuu? Since I entered sumo he took care of me. He is a Yokozuna I used to idolize for years. I've come back this far and  I felt I wanted to face him once more on the dohyo. That is regrettable. He is a Yokozuna that took things seriously and although I shouldn't be saying this about myself,  I think that I have to be like that. I'm really sorry he is retiring as he was part of the old guard, but we, as the new guard, need to gambarize."

Shoudai, beating Takayasu decisively today: "I wasn't thinking of the fact that my opponent was the sole leader of the yusho race. I just wanted to go all out and have a tachiai that would put pressure on him. I was able to get my first step in and managed to do forward - moving sumo. That should be a good influence on me for the remaining four days. Kakuryuu? He noticed me ever since i entered sumo. I borrowed his chest countless times, so it's really regrettable. He taught me not to have my hips too high and at what angle I should hit with my head when attacking. I want to keep everything he taught me in mind and show good results."

Takakeishou needs one more win to escape kadoban, told about Kakuryuu's intai: " I did not know that. I just found out so words don't come easy, my friend. When we saw him going at it fiercely during jungyos, we all knew we had to be equally active. I learned a lot of things from him, without using words. I want to achieve a good record even more, now that he has retired. All I can do is give it my all and do things i am capable of at this time."

The veterans are feeling the fatigue. 31 year old Hidenoumi, beating Chiyoshouma, but complaining: "It's tough physically. Not because I'm back in Makuuchi this basho. It's always tough. It's been tough since day three.."  Akiseyama, 35 years old: "I'm really tired, but everyone is tired..I'm always tired. I feel this way every basho!"

Meisei on his bout today and on  Kakuryuu: "I was able to concentrate and attack well. I think my condition is getting better and better. Kakuryuu?  He felt I was overdoing it during training. He told me to take it easy and that taking care of my body was of the utmost importance and that it was equally important to rest.  He used to watch me train during jungyos  and gave me advice many times. That's the Yokozuna he was. I faced him once on the dohyo and he beat me soundly. I really wanted to face him again.. "

Hokutofuji has become a father, and is close to getting his kachikoshi, after  beating his rival Mitakeumi today: "I'm happy to have won. I still haven't grasped the fact that I'm a dad (son born two days ago) but as soon as the basho is over I'll be going home. That's when I'll probably realize it and the responsibility that comes with it.."

Kiribayama, losing to Takakeishou: "He sure was strong.. I planned on going straight forward as usual, but that didn't work out.. Kakuryuu was at the keiko-ba this morning as usual and he didn't show any signs that he was about to declare his retirement. I went for a nap and when I awoke I saw it on the news. It's really painful. I was able to become this strong  thanks to the Yokozuna lending his chest to me. He was doing it for the heya's sake and for my sake. He was a kind Yokozuna."

Asanoyama on Kakuryuu: "Ever since I was new to Makuuchi I faced him at degeiko. This sudden intai really surprised me."

Day 11 addendum:

Tobizaru, beating Kotoekou and getting his first kachikoshi after three bashos: "Until now II wanted to win calmly, but I started to do wild sumo and got that kachikoshi, which is a good thing. I am totally thrilled!  I was pushed back and was in danger at some point .. I lacked composure. I will be concentrating on a bout a day."

Daieishou, beating Ounoshou, five straight wins and having more wins than losses for the first time this basho: "I was able to go about it calmly. I will be concentrating during the remaining four days!"

Wakatakakage, fifth straight win: "I came in from under and did good sumo. I just want concentrate on each bout."

Shimanoumi, makekoshi: "I'm getting better- I'm moving better.."

Ounoshou, six straight losses: "I was weak. My feet are not moving well. All I can do is to face things a bout a day. I would like to turn things around with renewed fighting spirit!"

It's a bit funny to see that Terunofuji considers himself part of the new guard. He's not exactly the youngest anymore, so I'd say he's more like the inbetween guard.

He's only a couple of years older than Asanoyama, and actually a couple of weeks younger than Shodai. I think it's fair to say he's the new guard; he just lost his "super young hotshot" years thanks to injury.

Since a guard's job is to keep the whippersnappers at bay, it's quite fitting.

That would make him more part of the old guard wouldn't it? Since the new guard would be those same whippersnappers.
