Eikokurai 3,437 Posted May 17, 2021 (edited) Man, how did Terunofuji survive? Takayasu just seemed to run out of power right when he had him. But what is it about Takayasu that worries Teru so much? He was clearly cautious, keeping his head low to avoid letting Taka in close. Odds on the zensho just went up (or down? Not sure how that works.) Kaninoyama 1,818 Posted May 17, 2021 That was a blown chance by Takayasu. He was in multiple good positions to come out with a win and make the basho interesting.
robnplunder 976 Posted May 17, 2021 Damn, I was hoping for Takayasu's win. The yusho race just got absolutely boring.

Every time Takayasu gets a bear hug he has better momentum for the yorikiri; Terunofuji doesn't really seem to be able to do any beltwork once Takayasu has the morozashi, and a kime-hold doesn't work on someone of the size and strength of Takayasu. 1 minute ago, robnplunder said: Damn, I was hoping for Takayasu's win. Well, on the plus side, if this is the basho of duck breaking, Asanoyama might have a chance to break his own duck against Terunofuji and do Takakeisho a solid. But I think we're really seeing the start of a rope run. Edited May 17, 2021 by Seiyashi

Let's also not forget that Takayasu was himself a capable Ozeki not long ago who was upended by injuries and is working his way back into form and possibly his own return to Ozeki. He needs a strong finish to maintain that. 6-3 after 9 days means he needs to win 2 of every 3 bouts remaining to reach 10 for a 20/30 record to take into July, where he'd need a 13-2 record. And Hoshoryu trips his second Ozeki opponent in two days!
Seiyashi 4,108 Posted May 17, 2021 Hoshoryu! Now if Asanoyama wins, at least Uncle has nothing too much to say today.
Kaninoyama 1,818 Posted May 17, 2021 Hoshoryu showing why so many of us are so bullish on his future.

Not this basho, but it gives him a larger margin of error next basho. A zensho here may make a junyusho palatable to the shimpan and YDC next round, whereas if he doesn't zensho, he probably needs no less than a doten. robnplunder 976 Posted May 17, 2021 Hoshoryu uses that leg very well. My hope is on Takakeisho to stay with Terunofuji. Which will come first? Enho's another improbable win or his kyujo?

Kaninoyama 1,818 Posted May 17, 2021 And with Takakeisho losing, Terunofuji takes a two-win lead into the final week. Even were he to lose to Takakeisho he still has room to cruise to victory.
Eikokurai 3,437 Posted May 17, 2021 (edited) Damn, I missed Daieisho beating Takakeisho. Yusho race over? I can't see Terunofuji "doing a Takayasu" and throwing a two-win lead. Edited May 17, 2021 by Eikokurai

Using Davit's on YT just in time to catch Takakeisho losing (and putting Teru on a 2 win lead), but the quality is much poorer. Davit's chat is speculating that mbovo is banned. robnplunder 976 Posted May 17, 2021 With Takakeisho's loss just now, the yusho race is officially over. Daieisho's my favorite rikishi. He is Mr. consistency but probably will never get that Ozeki rank.
Seiyashi 4,108 Posted May 17, 2021 (edited) Wow, this basho really is a bit ho-hum isn't it. No major stories coming into it, and yusho race over by day 10. Can we just award the hardware and call it a day? Unless the 8% happens... Edited May 17, 2021 by Seiyashi
Saburo 18 Posted May 17, 2021 I feel as if the yusho race is over, too. Terunofuji can/should be utterly fearless the rest of the basho while everyone else falls apart...

Poor guy seems to be struggling to get back to Sekiwake at the moment. Three KK's in a row with a yusho hasn't been enough. I hope at least he can retain Komusubi this time. Eikokurai 3,437 Posted May 17, 2021 (edited) Much better from Asanoyama today. Calm and composed on the defensive and solved his way out of the problem. Mitakeumi tomorrow as he starts his intra-sanyaku schedule (the day 1 Daieisho bout notwithstanding). Clearing 8 will be tight. Shodai has the same problem of course, albeit with the extra pressure of actual demotion on him. What chances they meet each other for kachikoshi?
