Jokoryu is having a dreadful basho in Juryo and is in danger of heading back to Makushita. Oho beat him today to move within two of his first sekitori KK.

Well-balanced bout between Asanoyama and Mitakeumi. Mita never looked like winning but he made Asa earn it with good Ozekizumo.

Shodai is in real danger of losing his rank. 5-5 and with all his Ozeki rivals still to face. I don't rate his chances of clearing kadoban.

Enho won by oshidashi today? Banned. Not allowed. (Laughing...) Little guy is just holding on man.

That was quite a effort on Enho's part.  He was absolutely fearless.  Rather than trying an inashi sidestep, he took big Takagengi on straight up!  By staying inside and close, he prevented Takagenji from doing anything, and with sheer determination, he forced/pushed his witless opponent out of the ring.  All his keiko practice experience is paying off.

It did look as though his ankle was acting up again after the bout.  But I would say that he is doing more than holding on.  He is actually winning bouts.  Many of us were thinking that just one win (or maybe two) is all he'd be capable of this tournament.  I for one am happy to say that he is proving us wrong.

After securing two Ozeki scalps with leg trips, I thought Hoshoryu would have his hands full with Hokutofuji.  There was little chance of Asashoryu's nephew getting a chance to use that technique against a pusher-thruster like Hokutofuji.  And while that turned out to be true, Hoshoryu still managed to out wrestle his larger, more-experienced opponent.

Somehow, Hoshoryu manages to rally when he is down (win wise) early in a tournament.  I'd love to know what Uncle Asa is tweeting or telling him on the phone.  Whatever he's getting, ... I want some! ;-)

No idea, but he seems to be working on his scowl with him.

He's got a ways to go.  Asa's scowl was downright terrifying.  Hoshoryu's, on the other hand, just looks like that of an angry child.

And Takayasu finally beats Shodai. The latter still has to face 3 Ozeki fighting much better than him (two of them aiming for the yusho), and one Takanosho starting to wake up. Not sure he can clear kadoban this time.

Chiyotairyu reinventing himself as a yotsu specialist this basho. He has gone to the belt almost every bout and it seems to be working for him so far. He should avoid getting his opponents morozashi though because the two times that has happened he has looked completely clueless about what to do next and has lost the match. And he's regrowing the sideburns, which could also explain the winning record...

He even got mad and gave Hokutofuji a dame-oshi+mean mug. >:-(

Today, Uncle Asa said, “If he gets this right, I won’t have to get mad!”. Also, the fact that we thought Hokutofuji was gonna cause Hoshoryu trouble after two Ozeki scalps is very telling of the Ozeki. Ginboshi dramatically losing its value...

Myogiryu to face Terunofuji... why??

Next in rank other than Aoiyama and he has only 1 win. Chiyonokuni is kyujo.

I agree.  Harumafuji's promotion-clinching win on Day 15 of the 2012 Aki basho over Hakuho was truly epic!!  I like this video partly because Jason, the video uploader, reacted so emotionally throughout the bout & afterwards, and also because it shows Harumafuji getting a huge warm hug from Aminishiki as he walked (staggered from exhaustion, actually) through the hallway near the dressing rooms after the bout.   This is my all-time favorite bout between Hakuho and Harumafuji.

Thanks for posting that - one of the great all-time matches and it was a pleasure to watch it again. And he beat the GOAT, at the peak of his powers, to do it.

Not sure Takanosho can fully prevent a drop in rank either. The sad part about ozekiwakes is that they tend to clog up sanyaku; Wakatakakage might again be hard done by for a sanyaku slot if he doesn't put up double digits. If Takanosho and Shodai both MK and the komusubi both KK, then no one else moves anywhere, and with no other joi member putting up strong numbers, there's no impetus to create an extra 2 komusubi slots.

If Daieisho also MKs, though, then it mightn't be so bad; Takanosho and Daieisho will drop out of sanyaku, being in the joi next basho, and leaving Wakatakakage to take over the K1W slot.

o rly (Thinkingindepth...)

Seriously though, Myogiryu is a free win. Endo is having a great basho, he should've been the choice along with Onosho.

I had Ichinojo on my mind yesterday but you never know when the giant is awake or asleep.

Endo also has feast or famine periods, but this basho both Ichinojo and Endo are arguably more awake than asleep. At least they'd be more credible opponents for Teru than a 3-6 Myogiryu; one can match him in size and strength and the other can possibly outclass him for technique.

It's almost as if Myogiryu is a placatory offering to Terunofuji - "please take this sacrifice, o great kaiju, so you don't mess our ozeki up too bad"

I hope Azumaryu didn't get injured. You could hear him shout out in pain and after the bout he looked uncomfortable with his left elbow.

I think it's a bit early to panic about Shodai. 3-2 over the next 5 days against his remaining opponents doesn't seem too far-fetched.
