How many surgeries has Hakuho had?

Recommended Posts

Does anybody know how many sumo-related surgeries Hakuho has had? A list of how many and the nature of the surgeries would be appreciated if anybody knows how to find out.

His most recent knee surgery got me thinking about how many times I have read that he has undergone a knee operation and it seemed like quite a few. All of the years of wear and tear have surely added up to a decent amount of operations.

Wikipedia says 4 - one in 2016 on his toe, and three in 2018, 2020 and 2021 for the right knee.

Hmm....I wonder if they are only counting major surgeries, because I seem to recall many more minor operations on his knees over the years, unless I’m getting those mixed up with another rikishi....

Probably. And there's also probably a multitude of minor treatments or day surgeries that we'd not know about.

The way the one article was worded it seemed like he's been getting his knee drained quite often by his doctor.

Yeah, but do you consider that a "surgery"?

To be a little pedantic with Chanko Thief's question, is he asking about major surgeries that would need minimum 1 night's stay for observation, or are we including outpatient treatments as well? If the latter, I wouldn't be surprised if it's in the tens or even a hundred plus by now.

Think you might be mixing it with another rikishi.

One of the reasons for Hakuho being so dominant is that he was an injury free rikishi until he got to his 30s. From 11/06 to 09/15 he never missed a single day and the only time I recall him being slightly injured was in 05/12 when Kyokutenho yusho and that was the only time he didn't do at least JY. (although there are much better sumo history brains in this forum than mine, so someone might think differently)

From 2016 onwards it was a different story...
