I officiate high school wrestling and the schools will normally have a trained medical staff on hand. You would think the NSK could afford to have a few on hand too

On the one hand, this shouldn't be about affordability. On the other hand, as far as i remember, the NSK can't afford s**t. Wasn't there a thread, showing the NHK basically is broke and can survive only through subventions?

Serious thought: maybe with all the traditional garb worn by everyone around the dohyo, they think it would be a jarring sight to have a doctor and EMT in modern clothes.  So maybe they could wear a yukata or something similar, but still be at dohyo-side.

No. Just no. And if, they could stay in the tunnels, just round the corner. That's a 10s jog to the dohyo.

They are suffering significant losses, but they have a lot of net assets still.  Without being able to read their financial statements (they presumably don't print them in English, even if they're available), I can't make much of an assessment of whether they have a lot of their net assets tied up in illiquid assets, like the Kokugikan.  If it was a US company, the Kokugikan might be nearly fully depreciated by now, 35 years later, but I know enough about international accounting standards to know things can work quite differently elsewhere in the world, especially with the valuations of Fixed Assets.  They very likely have reserves for the replacement/repair of the Kokugikan that they can draw off of if absolutely necessary.  Since they presumably don't distribute excess profit to the shareholders from good years since they are a public benefit corporation, I might guess they have a reasonable amount of money in investments that they're drawing down on during this downturn.

So I have no idea how much of that 30ish billion in net assets are available in cash or securities, and how much of it could only be realized by selling stuff off.  Nor do I know how much they have in terms of available credit facilities (ability to borrow money immediately), which is something that tends to be discussed in most large company annual reports since it gives investors an idea of how much they can afford to lose in the short-term without really affecting their operations.  They could be in fine financial shape, if a bit worse off than 2 years ago, or they might have to borrow extensively to meet current obligations.  The reports from Akinomaki don't discuss that.

That's the article i was looking for, thanks.

I wish they would invest in some buckets of paint and some plaster for the corridors. They look nasty.

Yeah, you're right.  The crucial thing is to have them available immediately, not down the street at the clinic.

The entire audience is in modern clothing.

Sorry, you and Benihana are right.  I was noticing that everyone next to the dohyo are in traditional clothing -- I assume that's a tradition/Shinto thing.  But as was pointed out, they could be in the tunnel ready to go.  The inportant thing is to be there in seconds.
