Jakusotsu 5,981 Posted April 24, 2021 Well, it couldn't get much farther from "new" or "online"...
Katooshu 3,246 Posted April 24, 2021 (edited) Not new, but it is online: https://www.retrogames.cc/nes-games/tsuppari-oozumou-japan.html I played a few matches and enjoyed it for what it was -- an extremely basic old game, but a sumo game nonetheless. The sad thing is that 34 years on and it's still pretty much the most developed sumo game you'll be able to play. Edited April 24, 2021 by Katooshu
Eikokurai 3,437 Posted April 25, 2021 I’d love to see a proper sumo video game like FIFA, released each year with the real rikishi in it. Also with a career mode where you can make your own rikishi, build up his skills and acquire new kimarite as you try to climb the ranks, and an Oyakata mode where you run a stable and have to scout and train up several rikishi at once. Alas, sumo doesn’t have wide enough appeal to justify the development costs for such a game.
Churaumi 743 Posted April 25, 2021 I can guarantee one sale, if it were quality. I might even buy Raiden DLC. They would need some serious jiggle physics though.

It’d be the sort of the game where they’d make it badly, nobody would buy it because it was bad, so they’d conclude there was no interest in it at all and abandon it. My old employer was quite skilled at rushing things through like this and then concluding the problem was the product idea, not the implementation.

I've never understood the "EA model" of having real people in games where I then have to control the character. It bumps up the license cost for no purpose, and means you have to get on the annual upgrade treadmill, so it's obvious why companies do it but not (to me) why players want it. The only up-side is that I wouldn't have to invent the names.

Well, it’s clearly popular with most gamers because people love FIFA and one of the main grumbles about Pro Evolution Soccer was it’s use of fictional teams. Most people would edit the teams themselves (or use a cheat code to do it). Same for Madden, NBA, PGA Golf, etc. People like to role play and to immerse themselves in the world, which means more than simple game mechanics. Where’s the fun in pretending to play in the Premier League or NFL if it doesn’t look like the one you’re familiar with? One of the main joys is taking your favourite team to a championship. I’d much rather play an Ozumo game that had familiar rikishi competing in the Kokugikan. Much more fun trying to make Hakuho go 0-15 or Takayasu win a yusho. Churaumi 743 Posted April 25, 2021 If EA did make it, maybe they could work some licensing magic and cross up some licenses. Not that Ronaldo or Tom Brady would be any good...there would have to be a chanko eating mode, and it better be fun because we'd be doing it a lot.

I never had any problem enjoying Subbuteo or Wembley even though the players had no names.

He visited Goeido’s stable and did some butsukari with him on some NFL promo tour of Japan. :) 14 minutes ago, nagora said: I never had any problem enjoying Subbuteo or Wembley even though the players had no names. You’re the same person who doesn’t like real people in video games though, so this is just more evidence of your preferences and nothing else. I used to play subbuteo too, for what it’s worth, and I’d always play as a real team (used to collect them) and add my own commentary about real players: “Beardsley to Barnes, Barnes down the wing, he whips in a cross ... Rush is onto it! Rush shoots! Rush scores!” Same deal.
