Indeed. Beyond that, it's not like the presence of Japanese-born rikishi who are half or fully not ethnically Japanese is something new - it's just that it was almost exclusively Korean ancestry that was involved until the last couple of decades and it was very much kept on the down low. Potential behind-the-scenes discrimination notwithstanding, there's never been anything official to keep such rikishi out of sumo, at least to my knowledge.

Were these predominantly Zainichi?

Not a single Juryo rikishi at his highest rank? Oh my..

Tohakuryu, Takakento, Nishikifuji and Bushozan are at their highest rank. Although they all kept the same rank as last basho, which was their highest.

So that doesn't count as their highest record, since they've  been there already.

Just because stables are willing to take in guys wholly unsuited to sumo doesn't mean that hordes of unathletic kids who had never previously shown an inclination towards physical activity are suddenly going to rethink their life path and throw themselves body and soul into the most violent sporting environment on the planet.

Most of those kids realize they will never see any kind of financial reward but are pretty much guaranteed to be bullied and beaten on a daily basis.

Yeah, but there's got to be a down-side too, right?

Let's not forget free room and board!  And an exercise plan.

Mainland sweatshop worker: "This is horrible!  What are we producing?". Boss: "Fancy cell phones."

Heya sweatshop worker: "This is horrible!  What are we producing?" Oyakata: "Sweat."

I was just wondering about the rankings in jonokuchi... with no mae-zumo how do you think they put the new lads in order? They seem to have put the younger ones higher up.

The ex-sekitori for Natsu basho...from 31 to 29 with Daishoho and Oho having moved back up to juryo, Kaonishiki gone intai and only Yago down from the paid ranks. Or rather just 28 as Kotoyuki has also retired in between tournaments, but he's still ranked for this one.

April birthdays: Four guys who are now all at least in their 30s. Kotoyuki turned 30 shortly before his intai, Fujiazuma is now 34, Sakigake 35, and Dairaido even 41.

May birthdays: Defending makushita champion Abi celebrated his 27th birthday yesterday, two others will have their day of honour after the basho with Asagyokusei (28) and Yoshiazuma (44).

Only a few of these guys were last seen in juryo in a May tournament, none recently - it's been 4 years for Asahisho, 5 for Kagamio and 7 for Higonojo.

March saw lots of absences even aside from Covid-sidelined Ryuko, Kitaharima and Nionoumi (who kept their ranks); we should find out on Saturday who out of Ikioi / Asahisho / Toyohibiki / Masunoyama / Kagamio is back in action again.
