Kaikitsune Makoto 209 Posted July 5, 2021 The expression on Enho's face when he heard torinaoshi was called looked like "no way..." so he knew he was not able to do sumo. Many athletes with concussion want to continue. I remember in ice hockey when player asked "what game is this???" and wanted to get back on ice after a big hit and concussion. Coach didn¨t let him go back on ice to figure out what game is it.

Kaninoyama 1,797 Posted July 5, 2021 (edited) A Yokozuna-like win by Terunofuji there against Wakatakakage. Wakataka got an advantageous position and it didn't matter at all. Edited July 5, 2021 by Kaninoyama

But yeah, those swings from Takagenji belong in the MMA ring with his exiled brother, not a sumo dohyo. Are we sure that wasn't Takanofuji actually in the ring? The good news is that, along with the increased vigilance by the shimpan, it seems Takadagawa actually saw some of those hits: when he first pointed out to the fukushimpancho that Enho was unwell, he made an uppercut-like motion with his right arm. Even if no official sanctions follow, at least there might be a quiet word had with Tokiwayama-oyakata. Edited July 5, 2021 by Seiyashi

yohcun 401 Posted July 5, 2021 Damn, Takakeisho just... stopped. Even Ichinojo clued in that something bad happened and got gentle with him.
Seiyashi 4,097 Posted July 5, 2021 (edited) Great sumo from Terunofuji, god knows what the mattas were from Shodai and Daieisho, but the most concerning has got to be Takakeisho. Something seems to have gone completely off with that right knee of his, which is weird as he didn't seem to have exerted any force on it during the bout at all. It's probably a good thing Ichinojo had a firm hold on him and let him down gently to the dohyo, otherwise even worse damage could have been done. Out comes the wheelchair for a second time. There goes that outside hope of yokozuna promotion. And just as we were talking about Takagenji using brutality in the ring, Hakuho is not that much better. Multiple slaps to the face - not as bad as his previous kachiage and not as bad as Takagenji, but I'd say there was clearly intent to disorientate. They just said he was favoring and then icing the right side of his neck in the dressing room after he was wheeled off, but at the very end of the broadcast they reported he was able to walk under his own power to the ambulance waiting to take him to the hospital for an examination. Yes and holding his right arm while sitting on wheel chair can indicate his has some definite nerve compression issue in his upper spine and it just got worse. 1

Oshirokita 188 Posted July 5, 2021 So nice to see Hakuho with such determination to succeed. He was very aggressive when he went to grab his towel before his last salt toss. Even so, there was a flutter in his eyes before the tachiai and some vulnerability. I don't know how many more wins he can notch, but I am happy with his results thus far. It's nice to see him winning after so long, but he's doing it at all costs which means some relatively ugly sumo. It's not even technically good sumo like Okinoumi will do despite his age, it's "must win" sumo.
sumojoann 1,265 Posted July 5, 2021 Here is another video of the Enho vs Takagenji bout. It shows more of the bout at the end with several slo-mos. The bout starts at 8:40. At 9:44 is a slo-mo that appears to me to show Takagenji's left hand as a closed fist at Enho's neck. Do y'all see anything that looks like a closed fist?

Seiyashi 4,097 Posted July 5, 2021 (edited) Before we get too carried away with Takagenji-bashing (both of his doing and against him), I'd suggest we be clear about exactly what it is we're criticising. As far as the rules go, as long as the hand was open and/or he didn't simultaneously strike both sides of the head, he's in the clear. Of course, it's up for debate whether or not his hand was or was not open, and/or whether or not his actions shaded so close to the borderline that he ought to be warned, whether formally or informally for it. There's also the other half of it which is that he did it to Enho, who on top of being smaller and lighter than him, is also a very popular (and cute) rikishi. Brutalising a smaller and more popular rikishi is bound to get him hate and dislike, but that is technically irrelevant to whether or not it is a violation of the rules. If he violated the rules, he would violate the rules regardless of whether he was fighting Hakuho, Ichinojo, Enho, or Byakuen. For my part I thought his arm movement was quite a bit more windmilly than harite usually are (compare the lateral windup slaps Chiyoshoma and Ishiura were giving out last basho), and I can see where the uppercut criticism is coming from. It's a pity Asahisho is gone and there's no other Miyagino rikishi in juryo at the moment (although Hokuseiho might get there next basho); I wouldn't mind if someone dameoshied Takagenji in retaliation. Speaking of which, I know of the Kotokanyu and Asashoryu cases, but have there been any cases of a rikishi getting comeuppance of any kind from a "victim's" stablemate instead of the "victim" himself? nagora 88 Posted July 5, 2021 It looked borderline to me. I wouldn't hang a man on the evidence presented, but I might keep an eye on him.
RabidJohn 1,793 Posted July 5, 2021 An ozeki visibly loses the use of the right side of his body mid-bout, then can't move from the position his aite gently lowered him into, and the discussion is all about that nasty Takagenji smacking poor little Enho about... Really? 7

Jyuunomori 226 Posted July 5, 2021 (edited) Gotta say: This is some weird shit... ...it is like the people ringside actually took Takakeisho's injury seriously or some shit...imagine my surprise they didn't let him die on the ringside. Weird times. Enho not being asked to be a superhuman and not letting him continue might be even weirder. Edited July 5, 2021 by Jyuunomori
junsan 192 Posted July 5, 2021 I'm all for a Takagenji suspension after that dispaly. This nutjob might be the same level of bully as his brother in life outside the dohyo. Go do this in MMA where you'll get receipts in kind.
