Jakusotsu 5,981 Posted July 8, 2021 Shiba vs. Tochimaru, highlight bout of the day so far between two rather old prospects.
Tigerboy1966 1,449 Posted July 8, 2021 Enho makes a sizeable withdrawal from his Bank of Goodwill account with a blatant henka against Mitoryu.
robnplunder 975 Posted July 8, 2021 That is pretty blatant henka by Enho. He needed the win. I don't like to say this but I think he should use more henka.

Looked to me like Enho set it up by delaying putting the fist down and getting Mitoryu poised to pounce.
Eikokurai 3,437 Posted July 8, 2021 Nice kirikaeshi by Ishiura there. First one in a year in Makuuchi. I do like that kimarite.
Eikokurai 3,437 Posted July 8, 2021 I can't see Ura getting a kachikoshi this time. Even his couple of wins have looked unconvincing and came against aite who are, to be frank, giant pants (Daiamami, I'm talking about you.)
Seiyashi 4,097 Posted July 8, 2021 Tamawashi loses to Aoiyama, which leaves Hakuho and Terunofuji as the only undefeated rikishi in makuuchi at least of now. (Technically Takayasu is also "undefeated", but...)
Eikokurai 3,437 Posted July 8, 2021 (edited) Hoshoryu is looking very tidy this basho. 4-1 at the end of the first third in what is his strongest Makuuchi start to date and well on track for a new career high rank. Can he keep it up? Edited July 8, 2021 by Eikokurai

Can he keep it up? Endo's withdrawal may have thrown a bit of a spanner in the works here though. That puts Hoshoryu just in reach of the schedulers to put him against sanyaku opposition, barring those Endo have already fought. To be fair though, that only exposes him to Shodai and the lower sanyaku, since Endo has already fought Terunofuji and Hakuho. I don't see him necessarily beating Wakatakakage or Takayasu, but Shodai, Mitakeumi and Meisei are fair game.
Eikokurai 3,437 Posted July 8, 2021 Good bout by Wakatakakage and Daieisho. Both guys showing their speed and agility. 2-2 on the H2H now. A finely poised rivalry is developing between them with their overlapping styles.

Seiyashi 4,097 Posted July 8, 2021 There goes any outside hopes of yusho and ozeki repromotion. Takayasu gets handed his first loss and is most probably 3 off the pace by the end of the day.
Eikokurai 3,437 Posted July 8, 2021 Takayasu drops another bout. No Ozeki promotion this time. Hopefully he can push on to 10 wins at least though.
Eikokurai 3,437 Posted July 8, 2021 (edited) Teruno wins the battle of the Fujis. A foregone conclusion once Hokuto's thrusts were nullified. Edited July 8, 2021 by Eikokurai
Eikokurai 3,437 Posted July 8, 2021 Man, Shodai looked absolutely pathetic there. I started feeling sorry for him. He couldn't impose himself on the bout at all and was just sort of chasing Tobizaru around grabbing at air. Not Ozeki sumo, to say the least.

RabidJohn 1,793 Posted July 8, 2021 Woah, Konosuke's stacking up black marks lately, isn't he? I don't know if it's plain bad luck or what, but he was in exactly the wrong spot to see Okinoumi's toes go out first today... Great minds think alike, as they say. At the start and end of the day only Mongolian rikishi remained unbeaten, and I'm watching Kiribayama and Hoshoryu holding their own in the upper half of makuuchi, Terunofuji on the verge of promotion, and Hakuho being Hakuho, and wondering: what happened to the Japanese resurgence? As hafu Filipinos Mitakeumi and Takayasu don't count. I thought it was over a year ago, but for the time being at least it looks like Mongolian domination has resumed. Kotogouryuu 131 Posted July 8, 2021 That was good old Hakuho right there. Drive from the hips, very hard to defend against.

yohcun 401 Posted July 8, 2021 I was admiring how smooth Konosuke was at getting the sagari out of the way. Shame he kinda rendered it moot by getting the decision wrong. 34 minutes ago, RabidJohn said: what happened to the Japanese resurgence? Kintamayama 45,161 Posted July 8, 2021 (edited) I don't think anything got us ready for this- tomorrow, the showdown we've all been waiting for down in Sandanme- 8E Shuuji against 12E Shouji, both 0-2! I'm already sweating in anticipation. Fans already lining up for tickets: Edited July 8, 2021 by Kintamayama
Seregost 132 Posted July 8, 2021 Am I the only one seeing a blatant hairpull from Hakuho to Takanosho on day 4? Not at the end, more like in the middle or the beggining of the bout... when he's just pulling and going to the side. For me is quite clear
