His ass was sagging? Everything else stayed in place?

Indeed, it is a common phenomenon when one gets out of shape-the ass sags.

*Edit: Maybe I should have posted  that in the "Preparations of them asses" thread..

Hmm, I guess I'll pay particular attention next Basho.

You won't see it during the basho, because everyone is in top shape.

They say he's kyujo because he's being ironed.

Again, not exactly preparation, but an interview with Hakuhou's private physician of seven years Kazutaka Sugimoto on Hakuhou's condition.

-How is he recovering?

-Truth be told, he came to me two days before the Haru basho with water and blood in his knee. Usually, this is not a condition where you can enter a basho, but he was adamant. But then I had to extract blood from his knee on a daily basis. After he went kyujo he had an MRI and it became apparent his cartilage was damaged. I told him only surgery can fix it.

-After the surgery, how well is he moving his knee?

- I'd say the joints are functioning at 100%, but there is still some swelling. Still, he is able to train. Basically it's not really recommended for a knee injury, but he is squatting 130 kilos. His power has pretty much returned to what it was.

-His crucial basho is nearing. What do you expect of him?

-Usually, the rikishi say they will gambarize bout by bout, but Hakuhou never says a bout a day.. He always faces all 15 days as a whole.  The question is if the fifteen days will go as he plans. He says even if the knee isn't 100% it is what it is and that he will be doing a certain kind of sumo, a kind that he is going all out and simulating.

-What is the key for him for lasting the fifteen days?

-He knows how to balance the shin-gi-tai (heart/technique/body) well.  If the body isn't doing well, he knows how to supplement that with heart and technique. His technique has not waned one bit. The question is if he can show heart for the 15 days. He has not trained with sekitori over 160 kilos at all. Will his knee hold up well? I think those are the two important points..

Fortunately Terunofuji taught us all that having knees is overrated.

Debatable, but also moot as a Yokozuna and an Ozeki wouldn’t ever meet on day one.* As you intimate, in the real world Hakuho needs to get through 14 days of competition first.

*For academic purposes, it’s happened just the once in history, in Jan 1972:

Didn't know that The Kyokai had been fixing Guess Kitanofuji's Aite that long ago.
