A Gaijin Looks At Sumo Wrestling

Recommended Posts

Well, I thought she did a fairly good job. Maybe a bit excessive on the belly touching?

This kind of attention for sumo will increase through the Olympics, probably one of the reasons Hakuho really wanted to still be a part when they roll around.

That was definitely an odd moment.

Was that an oyakata she's talking with? He seemed to release the rikishi, who looked ever so relieved to remove his belly from the scene.

I really do think she did a fairly intriguing peek into sumo. I've seen a lot worse. It was entertaining and she was trying to be open to what she encountered and certainly interested in learning a bit.

I'm wondering if that was an old video.  She's talking to the Head Sumo Coach at Kindai University (ex-Kinki in English).  So he's not an Oyakata.  The wrestler she pokes is Oshoryu, formerly Kenji Motobayashi of Kinki U. (or his twin brother).  If that's him, he joined Ozumo in May 2019.  Also, no masks (well, only pre-COVID Japan-level masks).

The basho footage seems to be Day 14 of Haru 2019 based on the makuuchi dohyo-iri briefly seen at 0:56-0:58.

Indeed, very impressive. Knowing the SF crew 2 or 3 people have already gone and checked this. I'll take your word on it, though.

No need to. Asashosakari's expertise is infallible.

Since it involved having to recognize rikishi correctly, I wouldn't be going that far. :-P Methodology disclosure: I managed to recognize Toyonoshima, Ishiura and Chiyoshoma, who it turned out only shared a single makuuchi tournament, and in that basho there were only two days with all of them on the East side. Day 4 had to be eliminated since there's somebody ranked between Chiyoshoma and Ishiura in the dohyo-iri lineup, but not per the schedule.

(Iamnotworthy...)

Although it is quite interesting that there are specific combinations of rikishi who can "fingerprint" a tournament, though. It's in principle a simple enough task; but actually doing it.... I would if I had some free time.

This is the kind of post that makes me wish there were a 'wow' option under the like symbol.

I was thinking the same thing. A simple 'like' or 'thanks' doesn't seem good enough. :-O
