RabidJohn 1,855 Posted June 19, 2021 Mitakeumi's omission is understandable considering that most of them are either climbers or recent yusho winners, but if that's the trend why is Endo still so unnaccountably popular?
Seiyashi 4,108 Posted June 19, 2021 I wonder how the poll was conducted. Online, telephone, or what? That affects the profile of the respondents and hence the results. Knowing that a lot of old timers support Mitakeumi, I'm pretty surprised too.

dada78641 884 Posted June 19, 2021 I wonder when people voted on this? Since Asanoyama's scandal was pretty recent, maybe some of his votes are from before then?

It might have to do with their performance relative to their own history, considering how the poll seems to emphasise recent storylines. Endo has been performing generally consistently at his underwhelming level and still being popular, but 2020 was Mitakeumi's first year without a yusho, back to back MK putting him in the maegashira ranks for the first time in four years, and only one sansho, after 2 years of a yusho and multiple sansho. In contrast, last year was a really good year for Endo, with 3 kinboshi and a sansho; much better than the combined 24 months of 2018 and 2019 which saw only 1 sansho despite starting 2018 at komusubi. Gurowake 4,107 Posted June 20, 2021 Yeah, there was another poll a while back Akinomaki cited in which people picked their favorite rikishi of all time, and Endo was the #1 that was active. There was just an absolute media blitz of attention on him. He was the first Ms10TD. He got through Juryo in 1 basho. He had a pretty face, pleasant demeanor, and was very technique-focused as opposed to raw strength or size-focused. He was a very good young rikishi for the media to get behind and promote. It's unfortunate that it didn't go as well as anticipated, but that's what you get for trying to promote someone out of college; the best in college are certainly going to become sekitori, but it's hard to know where they're going to go from there because there just isn't the same level of rikishi available and the number of matches isn't that large. Turbold was way hyped and hasn't even made Makuuchi in 4 years! Also, no Takayasu. Surprised it wasn't mentioned yet. (I didn't see him mentioned yet at least.)
Fukuyamada 42 Posted June 20, 2021 If there were 38,912 votes in total then we're missing out on much of the picture by reading only the top 10 results.

Kintamayama 45,530 Posted June 20, 2021 Looking at this, I think either it's rigged, or some guys have large families. 11th- Meisei 1435 12th Takayasu 1051 13th Myougiryuu 941 14th Hakuhou 932 15th Midorifuji 853 16th Shimanoumi 781 17th Takarafuji 778 18th Tsurugishou 761 19th Mitakeumi 729 20th Tamawashi 713 21st Houshouryuu 705 21st Ryuuden 705 23rd Ounoshou 670 24th Tochinoshin 633 25th Ichinojou 627 26th Kiribayama 563 27th Terutsuyoshi 551 28th Kagayaki 550
Kintamayama 45,530 Posted June 20, 2021 (edited) The voting was held based on the May banzuke between June 6th-16th on the Nikkan site. You were allowed to vote once a day and for no more than three of your favorites at a time. Relative to the last poll: 8th - Akiseyama - not ranked in the last poll 7th - Takanoshou, up from 10th 6th - Daieishou, up from 11th 5th - Wakatakakage - not ranked in the last poll 4th - Endou, up from 6th 3rd - Asanoyama, down from 2nd 2nd - Terunofuji, up from 9th 1st - Takakeishou, 1st last time as well. RabidJohn 1,855 Posted June 20, 2021 So it was all post-scandal and 5 days of voting took place after he'd been suspended for a year, but Asanoyama only dropped 1 place from last year... My gast is well and truly flabbered, as Frankie Howerd used to say.

Maybe the public thinks going out to a bar when everyone outside sumo is allowed to isn't that much of a scandal.

Gurowake 4,107 Posted June 20, 2021 I guess I didn't really comprehend just how few votes were received by the top of the pack, though it's reasonable when you consider that people could vote for 3 different ones. Doing that is necessarily going to spread things out quite a lot (if people use their extra votes; the votes not being a multiple of three means they weren't required to). So in some sense to get the percentage of votes for each rikishi you almost need to multiple by 3, but even then Takakeisho only got around 25% of the vote, so the votes are spread pretty evenly.
