Game 21 for the Nagoya 2021 Basho

Welcome to Game 21 for the Nagoya 2021 Basho.

This was supposed to be a transition Basho, but circumstances are deciding differently and Profomisakari will be back next Basho as the main administrator of the game. In his introductory message in May, he mentioned that I had been working on a new way to submit your picks and here it is. I hope you will like it and please do send us your feedback to help us determine whether we should pursue this project or go back to the traditional format of the game.

And now, with no further ado, let's play!

 

HOW TO PLAY GAME 21

 

Shortly after the Banzuke is published, 21 potential bouts are selected by the admins. You just have to decide which bouts will or will not take place and, if they will, who you think will be the winners.

 

Each correct pick will earn you one point. If a Rikishi is listed in one of the potential bouts but never appears on the Torikumi for the 15 days of the Basho, the bout will be counted as correct for all the players. If two or more entrants end up with the same number of correct picks, the two following tiebreaker rules will apply:

  • TB1: entrants will earn TB points for their ability to spot winning outsiders (i.e. the fewer players pick up a Rikishi the more points you score) and the entrant with most TB points will be the winner.

  • TB2: if the first tiebreaker does not suffice to separate them, the entrant with the earliest submission time will be declared the winner.

 

The deadline to play is the Friday before Shonichi at 11 AM (JST), 2 AM (UTC)

 

If you want to play, simply click the link below. it will take you to a multiple-choice form that will offer you three choices for each bout: 

  • A if you think the first Rikishi will win

  • B if you think the second Rikishi will win

  • X if you think the bout will not take place

 

In addition to your picks and your Shikona, the form will ask for a valid email address. The reason for this request is (a) to allow the system to send you a copy of your picks and (b) to allow you to update your choices until the deadline by clicking the “Edit Response'' button that is in the email.

 

Besides, after you have submitted your choices, you will have access to global selection statistics (not individual player’s picks).

. Hello dear friends of game 21!

This is a comment on this selection post from my friend Tameiki. He was the only one who said he would help us two old men manage Game 21 if necessary.

And just that fall came this weekend. Asojima already said goodbye in January and on Saturday I had an accident and am now in the hospital with just a very simple Android mobile.

Tameiki had offered us to bring the management of the game into a new form. He introduced them to us. Asojima and I liked it, and I asked him to use the new shape for this basho. The fact that this happens under these circumstances makes things a little more difficult, but I am sure that we will solve this together and that you will find it good.

I will hopefully leave the hospital myself next week and also hand in my pick late, but I will be there.

Maybe I'll get back to you in between.

Here please a short answer to my long answer:

My answer offered me a choice of English or German. Because my English is very bad and aI lay in a hospial bed, I wrote it in German and hoped, it translated.

But it didn't translate. Hahaha!

Now you can read it in German.

But there is a good software Google translator. Perhaps you can use it. And excuse me please!

And now I can say a new "Hahaha".      I think I have found the solution.

The Google Crome browser did it on demand. People who not speak German can do it in several other languages.

And if it not will happen: I know now, that I'll back at homebefore the weekend.

Thank you for the positive feedback. The idea behind the alphabetical order of the bouts was to avoid the temptation to go for only "As" that seemed more likely if they were listed according to the Banzuke ranking.

Misunderstanding here. I meant in the bout brackets. Didn't even notice the alphabetical order :-D

Rikishi A 10:10 Rikishi B would be a bit more eye-charming. I tried it with Vivaldi (chromium) and Firefox, zoom, etc., but it seems fixed.

Thanks for the clarification. I agree with you, but the column width seems to be one of the settings that cannot be changed in GoogleForm (or I wasn't able to find out how).

Please excuse the somewhat clumsy upper table!
In my thoughts I’m as ever in the hospital.
I changed it a bit and transposed it, so it will surely be easier to read,
even if we should have a lot more players one day.

In addition, I have added a “Different picks” column.
For this purpose, every single tip of the player is compared with the corresponding single picks of all other players
and the number of deviations is added up over all 21 bouts.
So, whoever has the fewest deviations has the greatest agreement.

In the past, Asojima had always named the players with the greatest and the least agreement
after his first summary table after the deadline.

As you see, Fujisan achieved the greatest agreement and Nekonoyama with his “All A” vote the least.

By the way, there is also an "All B" tip from a player named Unkonoyama.
I assume that this is no coincidence and that you know each other.
And I hope you are not the same, because we naturally assume that each player only gives one tip.

With our new way of submitting bets, it is no longer possible to look at all the tips
that have already been given by competitors and to derive your own tip from them.

On the occasion of the tiebreaker TB1:
If there are more players with the same number of points,
will win the player who deviates more than his tied opponent
just in the bouts that he guessed correctly (for which he gets one point).

With other words: 
the player who scored more points by betting on underdogs.

So far we have calculated this using the lowest agreement sum for the correctly typed fights,
n
ow we do it using the highest deviation sum for these fights.
This results in the same ranking, but the TB values are different.

The winner must now have the higher TB value instead of the lower one as before.
This I wanted to explain to you.
Do not wonder, if no more the lowest TB is the best, but the highest!
