First, thanks for the Info.

Here again "Morita Hiroshi" as his name. I noticed since a year or so that NHK World switched the names of the true Japanese Anchorpeople. I find it kinda irritating ... showing who got a Japanese name and who not.

What do you think?

IIRC it's not just NHK. The whole of the Japanese government decided that they would adopt Japanese name order even when transliterating Japanese names in English; NHK is just following the crowd.

Yes, I have noticed this.  On the NHK pre-basho, the Tokyo-born man who spent many years in Ohio is Morita Hiroshi; the LA-born Hawaiian who moved to Japan in the 90's is Ross Mihara; the native Japanese man who worked in Europe is Raja Pradhan.

How in heck did that link of John’s get there?? I copied the link from the NHK site Hiro Morita and paste it as John Gunning from a week ago!

I think it's a good thing, because the reordering for Western audiences ends up being pretty confusing. Maybe that's just because when you speak Japanese and English you have to deal with both versions though. But I always thought it was more trouble than it's worth. Just learn that some countries put the family name first.

Agree.  Even for NHK English, it's their country and they can use their own word order for Japanese names.  They use the Western order for Western names:  I haven't heard anybody refer to Sumo commentator Gunning John (though that is a great name for a G.I. Joe character).
