Kintamayama 45,082 Posted July 3, 2021 (edited) Since nobody seems to be doing this (or did i miss it in some thread?) Seems like a HUGE number of rikishi this time. Seiyashi 4,075 Posted July 3, 2021 (edited) Usually @Yubinhaad runs the Rikishi Status thread for the past year or so, but yeah. If you are running it in lieu of him this basho he usually updates returnees and kyujos throughout the basho, so Hm, 54 kyujo. Of course Hatsu will have beaten it out because of the 4-stable COVID sitout, but it only had 32 "regular" kyujo and 65 COVID kyujo (27 from Kokonoe alone, 16 Miyagino, 12 Tomozuna, 10 Arashio). A sort of random sample from Aki 2019 (before COVID hit) had 32 kyujo also. So based on a really small sample size, yeah 54 (52 if you discount the suspensions of Asanoyama and Ryuden) is quite a lot. It also seems the lower divisions have a lot more kyujo this time round too, all >10 when it was +-8 previously. Sue 503 Posted July 3, 2021 No mass kyujo this time around due to some heya being knocked out due to COVID exposure? That's an improvement.

It used to be run by Fukurou but she sadly passed away. I don't want to step on anyone's toes - I wanted to know who was kyujo and couldn't find the answer on the forum. No worries - I was late getting online today so you beat me to it, but I'll be around as usual during the basho so let's continue using this thread. 2

Seiyashi 4,075 Posted July 5, 2021 (edited) Since Kintamayama isn't running this full time, I thought I'd pitch in - I hope he (or Yubinhaad) won't mind. Withdrawing from Day 3: Sandanme Sd2e Asakishin (Takasago) Went fusen on day 1. New shikona not working out, innit? Sd30e Asadaimon (Takasago) Lost to Sd30w Yamato by yoritaoshi. Sd35e Taiyo (Onoe) Went fusen on day 1. Sd60e Kotetsu (Otake) Lost to Sd60w Shoketsu by yoritaoshi - according to Yubinhaad, right ACL busted with bone contusion. Returning from Day 3: Makuuchi Se Takayasu (Tagonoura) Not sure Takayasu's return is well-advised so soon into a 10 day leave of absence, but in any case, he is still mathematically in for that 13-2 yusho and with it ozeki promotion. But he faces the biggest possible roadblock on his way in - literally: he gets Ichinojo for Day 3. I foresee a 60% chance he withdraws again on day 4, if he either aggravates the injury on dohyo, or loses to Ichinojo and realises he has no power to exert anyway. But in any case, a double digit result will still keep his ozeki hopes alive for another run, and a KK will at least make it easier to start another one. In addition, there may be possible further kyujo: No word yet on Enho and Takakeisho's participation in tomorrow's bouts, following their carting off in the wheelchair today. Enho got clocked one too many times by Takagenji during their bout, and was the first beneficiary of the concussion fusenpai torinaoshi rule instituted after the Shonannoumi debacle. He was unsteady while the first mono-ii was called, and when he mounted the dohyo for the torinaoshi, Takadagawa oyakata called a halt to proceedings after noticing Enho being off. A second mono-ii was called confirming the forced fusenpai rule, after which Enho stumbled over the tawara to do the final bow and was then wheelchaired off. To be honest, I don't think it was smart to let Enho still be moving around under his own power for so much longer after it was noticed that he was concussed, but progress is progress, I guess. Takakeisho injured his neck, apparently, during his bout with Ichinojo (despite no visible trauma occuring) and was similarly wheeled off to be checked at a hospital. Luckily, he was let down very gently by Ichinojo to the dohyo (who might have sensed something was wrong), and he was almost immediately checked on by sewanin and wheeled off. Reports are that he was seen icing the neck and arm, suggesting some form of internal spinal injury. If they do withdraw, Takakento and Meisei respectively will get the fusensho tomorrow. Good thing for both of them too, as they are both 0-2 and pick up a freebie and have a rest day. All in all, the NSK's emergency response is much demonstrably improved this basho. But the fact that it's a night and day change just highlights how deficient their previous attitude was. Edited July 5, 2021 by Seiyashi 1

Remember his arm twitching uncontrollably a few basho back? In today's bout nothing out of the order was visible at the tachiai. It looks to me to be a neurological problem, although it is not my field of expertise. Mikko?

Not to get morbid but twitching can also indicate a stroke as does complete paralysis on one side. I would hope given a rikishi's diet this is something they are already looking out for. Yubinhaad 11,636 Posted July 5, 2021 Kotetsu's kyujo is due to that classic yoritaoshi loss injury - right knee anterior cruciate ligament, and bone contusion for good measure.

Actually I thought about this too after today's incident. Back then it didn't look like a regular muscle cramp and more like nerve problem. It also went away fast and he was able to do normal sumo next day. My expertise is quite a bit lower than neck but it sure doesn't look like any brain issue but more like spinal cord problem or not really that either but nerve compression and bad as such. He did look to also have transient weakness in his leg too which would indicate quite bad nerve compression. Mostly arm though. Merely speculation but it seems he has some serious issue there in any case and will be a big problem for him in the future too. Might be severe enough to warrant decompression surgery but no idea if that is an option for rikishi in this still sometimes naiïve Kyokai logic. He is so young that he should undergo operative treatment if findings indicate that and orthopedist/neurosurgeon recommends that. Then again until some official info comes out this is truly guesswork. Surely the problem isn't in brain.
