The drug cheats and their *records* can get stuffed. Yeah, I wasn't being serious, hence the emoji of the guy running away.

I saw it once, being crafted by an older lady and presumably her son, but I haven't been able to find the video since.) Are you asking how they produce the tsuna itself? That is, the zig-zag pattern cloth, etc.?
Seiyashi 4,108 Posted July 22, 2021 28 minutes ago, Yamanashi said: zig-zag pattern cloth That's shide and just made out of paper, I think. The vid I posted has them just "magically" appear when Kakuryu poses with the tsuna alone, as they're not in the tsuna when the rope is first put on him. FWIW when they demonstrate rope wearing during jungyo, the shide are already inserted in the tsuna.
Yamanashi 3,903 Posted July 22, 2021 I think by crafted @Taikoubana meant the production of the tsuna (cloth, rope, etc.) itself. The shide (sorry, didn't know the term) shows up in Shinto rituals all over the place, but the rope looks specialized.

The shide (sorry, didn't know the term) shows up in Shinto rituals all over the place, but the rope looks specialized. Yeah no the rope is literally made from scratch by members of the stable/ichimon of the yokozuna, assisted by sewanin and NSK functionaries. The raw materials are cotton, as exterior covering as well as forming the bulk of the slimmer braided portion, hemp, which goes into the thicker parts of the rope, and copper wire, which gives the rope structure and support. In addition, there's also rice bran used to rub the hemp smooth. First strips of cotton are cut which go about 4-5m in length. Three of them will form each individual strand of the tsuna. The hemp is placed in the centre to form the bulky portion that will go over the yokozuna's belly, and is trimmed with scissors before that section of the rope is tied up with cotton strips to hold it in place for the next step. Once all three sections of the rope have been filled with hemp, they are tied around the teppo pole so that the two ends pass on either side of the pole. Copper wire is then inserted into each section, and the cotton is repeatedly twisted around the copper. Once that is done (leaving you with three copper-core cotton ropes, the braiding begins. One rikishi lies on the floor, anchoring one of the ropes. The rest of the rikishi split themselves into two lines on either side of that rikishi, and hold one rope each. On the coordinating call of "hi fu mi" (traditional Japanese for 1, 2, 3), the rikishi rotate the ropes counterclockwise: looking towards the teppo pole, the left team passes their rope to the rikishi lying on the floor, the right team takes the rope from the rikishi on the floor, and passes their rope to the left team, on the reply "sooo ichi-ni-san" (on-yomi reading of 1, 2, 3). The same process is then repeated for the other end of the tsuna. The ends are sheared off with wire cutters and bound with string, and the tsuna is then considered completed. Tsuna-uchi traditionally happens thrice a year, once before each Tokyo basho, although Hakuho had an off-season tsuna-uchi before Nagoya.
RaeucherLax 290 Posted July 22, 2021 (edited) Have there been any news if Terunofuji was hurt during the musubi no ichiban? He was favouring his right arm on the way back to the shitaku beya and everyone wondered if he might share Kisenosato's fate... But at least I haven't found anything on this subject (on here). ryafuji 815 Posted July 22, 2021 I would have thought with the condition his body is/was in, and the depths he plumbed, he would be under the least amount of pressure of any new yokozuna.
orandashoho 720 Posted July 22, 2021 I've always been impressed with the way Hakuho dealt with his injuries and body. I like the care with which Terunofuji avoids putting unneccesary strain on his knees off-dohyo in order to be able to use them in a bout with confidence. Yusho parades were cancelled ever since the COVID-19 pandemic started, as part of social responsibility to avoid crowds gathering to cheer on the yusho winner.

Asapedroryu 235 Posted July 22, 2021 I was expecting to see Harumafuji in the celebrations. Can't see Aminishiki either in the photos. Shouldn't these two have been invited?
Fujisan 533 Posted July 22, 2021 Well done Terunofuji! It could have been so different though.... If Terunofuji had made it to Yokozuna before he was injured we would have lost a great Yokozuna in his prime after only two yusho's..... Now we can see him live up to his early promise and win many more.
Tsuchinoninjin 1,276 Posted July 22, 2021 I think when Terunofuji looked absolutely lost in Makushita we all thought that the gig was up, but this has been a welcome surprise.

neonbelly 226 Posted July 23, 2021 Terunofuji might just have slightly nervous-looking eyes as a matter of physiology. In every interview I've seen his eyes look a little anxious. On top of that the obligation of a rikishi to be a "strong and silent" presence but also genial to the media and sophisticate hangers-on might inspire some awkwardness.
