Churaumi 743 Posted August 9, 2021 The "Hakuho Watching judo" scandal unfortunately passed away in its sleep last night. I am told there was no suffering, although this came after a prolonged illness. I have been told by no one that illness was an interest deficiency. The "Hakuho Watching Judo" scandal is survived by several relatives, including its brother, "Hakuho Has No Hinkaku," its cousin "Asanoyama Likes the Ladies Too Much," and its estranged grandparent, "Takanohana Tried to Take Over." It was 1 week old. 3
Seiyashi 4,097 Posted August 9, 2021 (edited) Sooooooo... Shibatayama upset that he wasn't in the equestrian event theory confirmed? Since no one else has said anything at all? Edited August 9, 2021 by Seiyashi
Yamanashi 3,861 Posted August 9, 2021 Shibatayama: "But he was at the Olympics when he shouldn't and he doesn't listen to us and he's got no hinkaku and ... Detective: "Forget it, Yasushi, it's Sumo Town."
Tsuchinoninjin 1,274 Posted August 9, 2021 The only thing I found written was 「特にその後は、何か(協会内で動きがあるか)ということは聞いていない」と話した It was said that the guy saying hasn't heard anything about NSK action after that. So maybe someone told them to shut up about it and Hakuho does win this round. Makes you wonder what happened. Shibatayama wasn't informed but someone in NSK was? Government man made a phone call? Who knows.
Tsuchinoninjin 1,274 Posted August 9, 2021 Maybe instead of banning everyone from social media they could use the rikishi posting to social media to keep easier tabs on them but that would be too simple right?

They’re probably concerned about the lack of hinkaku shown by Chiyomaru on social media when he used to go round waking everyone up

And it will continue to evolve, just like every other 'tradition' in ozumo. Older fans will believe it's changing too fast, while younger ones will think it's too slow. There is no Goldilocks zone. 12 hours ago, Kaminariyuki said: hinkaku - don't you just love these Japanese words that take a couple of paragraphs, maybe a short chapter, to explain? You can break it down to 'acting in accordance with expectations'. And it is an act. Ozumo has firm roots in show business. So Hakuho doesn't act in accordance with the expectations of the YDC and older fans. So what? They're already becoming marginalised. Hakuho has been playing to a large fanbase back home on Mongolia all along, and the majority of Japanese fans are probably better represented by the audience which went along enthusiastically with his banzai clap. There are future yokozuna who've never known a time without Hakuho, the GOAT. They're gonna air punch, kensho brandish, banzai clap, etc. because that's what he did. gunner 10 Posted August 10, 2021 I am very happy nothing much came of this event. while not Hakuhos greatest fan, I believe he is the greatest Yokozuna.and defines hinkaku.
Akinomaki 40,604 Posted August 10, 2021 After recent basho, those who performed well at the basho went all over the country to report the results and greet the supporters, oyakata going scouting etc. - But, the NSK corona rules change every 2 weeks, unless that point in the general rules has changed
Benihana 1,929 Posted August 10, 2021 This is a serious situation. The Honbasho Talk has been without any posts since almost 4 days. It's too quiet and that's starting to freak me out. Could someone in the kyokai please do something stupid?

Only Shibatayama was there to hold its limp, clammy hand when it flatlined and was (fortunately) not resuscitated.

I haven't tried to confirm this but, for once, that sort of makes sense.

When in Tokyo, is what I gathered. I saw some interviews after Nagoya where the guys started off with "As we can't go out.." I highly doubt Shibatayama would be repeating the words "breaking the rules" so many times if they were allowed to go out.

They're already becoming marginalised. I've seen people make claims along that line for as long as I've followed sumo. Not many actual tangible effects appear to have come out of that long-running marginalization, as far as I can tell. Quote Hakuho has been playing to a large fanbase back home on Mongolia all along, and the majority of Japanese fans are probably better represented by the audience which went along enthusiastically with his banzai clap. Majority of fans, maybe. Representing the majority of the money that keeps Ozumo alive, perhaps not quite. Quote There are future yokozuna who've never known a time without Hakuho, the GOAT. They're gonna air punch, kensho brandish, banzai clap, etc. because that's what he did. Because none of those future rikishi will endeavour to emulate the other yokozuna who were concurrently active with Hakuho instead? I've personally never considered the stuff that Hakuho gets pulled up for to be all that emulateable by anybody else. Almost all of it has just been things that came out of thin air in highly specific circumstances, lacking the consistent "flair" - for lack of a better word - with which Asashoryu acted (out), or the effortless excitement that Harumafuji could generate. A lot of it has just come across as a guy who realized at some point that he was seen as "the boring yokozuna" (especially by Mongolian fans!), and started to make a conscious effort at being more flashy and leaving people with more impressions of himself, good or bad as the case may be. Tsuchinoninjin 1,274 Posted August 20, 2021 Well, somebody isn't happy that this is quietly disappearing without much fan fare. An article appeared in Sankei news (a far right rag with some nasty publication habits) agitating for an investigation into Hakuho's appearance at the judo event. https://www.sankei.com/article/20210820-V37FNR425FPMREYCY2Z7CCKXCY/?fbclid=IwAR0k0vWJiny8fTQEj3cWYdjV2Afa9Jrnu_dE__VNAob5ODxaNKX0QyRb_yE There is a quip by Shibatayama that the request to go out as a representative should be done in a written form to be approved makes me think this is more of a administrative mess up compared to the Abi or Asanoyama situation. However the article pushes the comparison between these situations and is essentially demanding an explanation and investigation. The article at least admits that the going out ban is only 2 weeks before a basho and that the regulations for just after a basho is unclear. At the end the article seems to insinuate that Shibatayama is a bit weak and that Hakuho lives outside the rules and is being conveyed into a position of power in the NSK. I'll put out another thought of why everything died out: Hakuho is ready to retire and would have no problem with the image of the kyokai forcing him to retire over something so silly as being an official rep in the olympics and merrily chatting away with a Japanese Olympian. It wouldn't be good optics for Shibatayama.
