Women and Sumo

Recommended Posts

It's one of those things. I understand why women would want to do sumo or anything else they have an interest in. I don't understand why I would want to watch it. I feel the same about weight/sex-segregated sports generally.

Worst of all is tennis where women are paid the same for less effort and, by and large, a lot less quality too.

Seems to be the international media's number 1 interest in sumo these days....

Given the general left-leaning interest in equality of all types, missing half the world's population from theoretical participation in a sport is really low hanging fruit to pick for international media. Doesn't hurt that discriminatory cultural practices all around the globe are being blasted at the same time with some success (and I tentatively venture to say somewhat rightly so, if lacking sensitivity in some cases), although non-participation in a sport that drastically lowers your life expectancy must surely rank below things like honour killings and female genital mutilation, no?

Hmm, women in Ozumo ..

1) They have to be able to get up on the dohyo, so that's that.

2) Can't be wrestling topless like the men; I guess there are already Amasumo rules about poking at or pulling off the sports bra (having them wear shirts would be demeaning)..

3) Having them live in the same room with the other rikishi in the heya would be dicey; cleaning and cooking would be OK, but washing higher-ranked wrestler's ... bodies ... wouldn't work [nor would it work the other way around].

4) Since there are no weight classes, why should there be classification by sex?

Alternatively, just take the rules of Women's Amateur Sumo and turn it into Women's Professional Sumo, as countless other sports have done.  Get sponsorship from Japanese ladies' magazines and cosmetics companies like the other sports did.
