Man, the 1964 one is such a sharper, more dynamic photo. I don't know if they were trying to copy it or not, but the sumo one looks like such a cheap ripoff.

Not that it isn't totally unfair to even compare them, of course. Kamekura Yusaku is a legendary graphic designer.

Don't forget that the guys on the right are running. Making a composition where it looks like they are running isn't a difficult task.

The rikishi on the other hand have to be assembled from bouts. A more difficult task altogether. One that I think has been done brilliantly.

As you said, it is totally unfair to compare them.

The closest heya for degeiko (if it ever resumes is Oitekaze heya across the bridge in the farmlands to the north.

Kyushu head Sakaigawa with Mihogaseki-oyakata made a shrine visit to the Hakata Sumiyoshi taisha yesterday, to pray for the safety and success of the basho. https://twitter.com/sumokyokai/status/1453227010445152256/

Usually there is a yokozuna dohyo-iri as well, but those are customarily canceled now due to corona

Edit: not even day 15 senshuraku is fully sold out yet https://sumo.pia.jp/vacant/va11.jsp

That is … not a good poster design.

I rather like it, for some of the same reasons that others have stated. It's not the same old, same old, but rather, sows some dynamic action (literal and symbolic).

Nicely done, IMO.

Wow. Semi-tongue in cheek, I wonder if Asashoryu will be motivated to get in the ring and give his nephew a few workouts in training or something.

I'm guessing the spirit is willing but the body is not so keen.

Notice too the large glass doors/windows which will allow crowds to gather and watch morning practices.  If I were a sumo wrestler, I would find that distracting (although it replicates the presence of fans during tournaments).  I know that there is at least one stable in Tokyo that allows spectators to watch asageiko from outside.  Frankly, I prefer the private setting, where guests who obtain permission are allowed to sit inside.  But that is impossible now with KoRoNa!  (Weeping...)

Oitekaze-beya has a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows at the back of the oyakata platform. I went there in 2017 to watch their asageiko. A sign outside says people are wecome to watch if they remain respectfully quiet and refrain from eating or drinking. While I was there, some people came and went, nobody spoke. We didn't see Endo but we saw Iwasaki (now Tobizaru), Daieisho and others in top form.

I believe this thread will have the spoilers tag added onto the title?

And usually a 300+ cushion of posts before you actually get to current spoilers.

For some reason, I thought yesterday was the start of the basho, probably because last year the start coincided with the daylight savings time change. I was sad. But I got an extra hour of sleep, so it's a well-rested sadness.

If no new thread emerges, but we still have one week to wait - next to come: dohyo making and dohyo matsuri, and maybe some new rules for the spectators

dohyo making, this time 2 sets of photos only, no videos

dohyo matsuri today, the usual Corona style: no rikishi, no spectators

Unusually distracted this time around, I think just because I’ve been watching the T20 Cricket World Cup and the Autumn rugby internationals are happening now too. I haven’t given much thought to sumo. Once the basho is underway I’ll get into it though for sure.

Ryuden makushita zensho-yusho, anyone?

A lot of prospects at the top of the division though. Fujiseiun, Kitanowaka, Ishizaki, Oshoumi, Kanno, etc will all be looking at a potential Yusho. Ryuden is def the odds on fav though.

This was one of the best video coverages of the dohyomatsuri that I've seen.  The resolution seemed higher and the camera angles were really quite good.

For those Forum members who were desperate enough to watch the whole thing, it appeared to me that when Shikimori Inosuke was pouring sake on the West tokudawara (jump to 20:35), several of the oyakata in the front row on the West side were fast asleep (shades of Biden and Johnson at COP26!). (Laughing...)
