Eikokurai 3,437 Posted September 29, 2021 When all the Mongolians are running the Kyokai, they’ll end the policy of needing to naturalize to become an Oyakata and remove the limits on foreign rikishi. It’s all part of the long game. 5

It’s all part of the long game. And of course the Kyokai knew this was a risk which is why they forced out Asashoryu, Harumafuji and Takanoiwa before they could become Oyakata. It clear there is a Mongolian conspiracy and a Japanese counter-conspiracy. Edited September 29, 2021 by Eikokurai

I didn't know Minato oyakata was going to be stepping down that soon, he's only

He won't be the first or last rikishi to acquire Japanese citizenship and still stick around wrestling for a while - Kaisei and Kyokutenho are the obvious examples. So by the time he's ready to retire Minato oyakata may well be much nearer to 65 than not.

Those rare heya spots will become much sought after status symbols.

Seiyashi 4,087 Posted September 29, 2021 This thread needs a /s tag for its contents, methinks. Lest some future historian/joker stumbles across it and thinks there really was a conspiracy.

Eikokurai 3,437 Posted September 29, 2021 I apologize for my part in derailing this thread (though I’m not sure there is much to say about Ichinojo getting a Japanese passport).
Kaninoyama 1,787 Posted September 29, 2021 Can't really explain why, but Ichinojo has never struck me as having an Oyakata type of personality.

Pigs can fly - if you had shown Araiso next to Kise from three years ago, I think we would all have said that was his good twin.

That's what you get with those Asian types. You never know what's behind that smile... [Mods. I'd like to report myself.]

I would also imagine Kakuryu's experience will also a cautionary tale for others in the future, that you'll want to have your paperwork in order when the body is no longer holding up.
Seiyashi 4,087 Posted September 29, 2021 (edited) https://www.jiji.com/sp/article?k=2021092900831&g=spo Jiji reports that he has taken the naturalised name of Miura Takashi Takeshi, adopting the surname of Minato-oyakata (real name Miura Takayuki, ex-Minatofuji). Yubinhaad 11,683 Posted September 29, 2021 Listing in the official gazette, and PDF link if you want it. 25 minutes ago, Seiyashi said: https://www.jiji.com/sp/article?k=2021092900831&g=spo Jiji reports that he has taken the naturalised name of Miura Takeshi, adopting the surname of Minato-oyakata (real name Miura Takayuki, ex-Minatofuji). Probably Takashi, since it's the same kanji as his shikona given name. 1

Sue 508 Posted September 29, 2021 It's a shame that his back has been so fragile. When it isn't hurting, he's an absolute monster, and one can only speculate on what he might have been had it been healthy for his whole career.
Kaninoyama 1,787 Posted September 29, 2021 8 hours ago, ryafuji said: Well, it's a job. Guaranteed income until 65. Yes, but I meant in terms of being suitable for the job. I remember reading an article where I believe Asashoryu was quoted as saying that Ichi was such a country bumpkin that he was unable to even have an intelligent conversation with him. If true, hard to imagine him being an effective teacher/communicator.

As an Oyakata though what matters is not just experience and ability but the ability to to teach, communicate, recruit, etc. He may be good at it or may not. I don't know. We'll find out eventually.
