Ichinojo acquires Japanese citizenship

Hochi reports that Ichinojo has acquired citizenship, announced in the Kanpo for September 29th.

When all the Mongolians are running the Kyokai, they’ll end the policy of needing to naturalize to become an Oyakata and remove the limits on foreign rikishi. It’s all part of the long game.

And of course the Kyokai knew this was a risk which is why they forced out Asashoryu, Harumafuji and Takanoiwa before they could become Oyakata. It clear there is a Mongolian conspiracy and a Japanese counter-conspiracy.

Ichinojo still has a few good years in front of him. He won't be the first or last rikishi to acquire Japanese citizenship and still stick around wrestling for a while - Kaisei and Kyokutenho are the obvious examples. So by the time he's ready to retire Minato oyakata may well be much nearer to 65 than not.

Yes, but it will mean, each heya has to have one Japanese, and it will be a hard task to find a Japanese youth that still wants to join a heya.

I would also imagine Kakuryu's experience will also a cautionary tale for others in the future, that you'll want to have your paperwork in order when the body is no longer holding up.

It's a shame that his back has been so fragile. When it isn't hurting, he's an absolute monster, and one can only speculate on what he might have been had it been healthy for his whole career.

Yes, but I meant in terms of being suitable for the job. I remember reading an article where I believe Asashoryu was quoted as saying that Ichi was such a country bumpkin that he was unable to even have an intelligent conversation with him. If true, hard to imagine him being an effective teacher/communicator.

As an Oyakata though what matters is not just experience and ability but the ability to to teach, communicate, recruit, etc.

He may be good at it or may not. I don't know. We'll find out eventually.
