New recruits for 2021 Kyushu

Recommended Posts

Today the rijikai approved Sandanme 100 Tsukedashi ranking for 24-year-old Ibuki Suguro (勝呂  歩紀), who is joining Fujishima-beya. He is the older brother of the current Suguro, and like him is a graduate of Takushoku University. He finished third in the individual competition at the 2019 All-Japan championships, but after graduating he has been working for Nippon Express (perhaps competing for the corporate sumo team if they have one?) until deciding to enter ozumo.

If I'm not mistaken the corporate circuit has been completely on hold since early 2020, so he may have trained but almost certainly hasn't seen any competitive action. (But yes, Nippon Express is one of the more prominent companies in corporate sumo.)

The older Suguro is a short, squat, violent thruster. Strikes me as someone who would've been a good boxer.

You get into a firefight with him and he's hard to beat, but he's fairly limited overall, and probably the weakest sandamne starter yet.

Here he is in white (by the way, the guy standing by the dohyo, with the green stripe on his mawashi, is the best collegiate rikishi and won this tournament)

And showing some of his Toyohibiki-ness

For Isegahama-beya: Kouta Saito 齋藤光太 (17) from Hokuetsu high, Niigata. He first did judo and in 2nd year high school found interest in sumo. The heya has a regular training camp at the Yahiko shrine in Niigata, the oyakata was eager to get a deshi from that prefecture. Saito aims after Terutsuyoshi and wants to reach sekitori fast.

The oyakata was at the school today for a press conference - local NHK

Another news clip from the press conference of Saito, by Fuji TV, so it will stay on the net a bit longer: https://www.fnn.jp/articles/-/252679

Saito has found interest in sumo in 2nd year, but has not done any sumo yet. The oyakata also did judo at school, entering from judo background is common in sumo.

So should be Suguro vs Ersin in a Sd100TD debut showdown in Kyushu I believe

Here is a match between them in college, Suguro in 4th year and Ersin in 3rd year. Saitama Sakae team members looking on...

5 new recruits including an Inner-Mongolian, Asshead? (アスハダ), 21, who of course will be entering Arashio beya run by ex-Soukokurai, from the same country. He entered the Hakuhou Cup in the past representing China. He has been living at the heya for the last three years as a "trainee". An additional Mongolian 17 year old will be joining Sadogatake -  Gandolga Bilguun?  ガントルガ・ビルグーン. Sandanme 100 tsukedashi Suguro (Fujishima) the other as well. All underwent physicals today.

I don't know the Sadogatake Mongolian, but Asshead went to Hiryu High School in Shizuoka, which is a strong program and has several active pro graduates, including Midorifuji and Atamifuji.

He is tall and I remember him as being respectable on the high school scene, but not achieving notable results other than a top 8 at a national tournament in Kochi. He was M9 (25th) on the 2018 high school banzuke. If I recall correctly, likes to get a grip and go for throws.

Here he is at the 2018 interhigh (won by Kitanowaka)

And a smiling ass

Three *years* living at the heya and not competing?  Three months is reasonable, but three years?

Why would this be done? To let another foreign rikishi retire?

I dunno, let's ask the Oyakata who the last foreigner at the heya was.

Hopefully he's been getting good keiko in that time and hasn't just been facing jonidan/jonokuchi no-hopers and being the laundry boy. Otherwise he could've benefited more from doing college sumo.

I thought Sokokurai had been retired a lot longer than he had lol. Sorry silly question.

Foot guy is another newcomer, not Suguro.

No name was given and only the two were mentioned by name, so I assumed it was him. Looking at the weight data it should be Saito from Isegahama. Looks of course quite different than in the suit at the presentation.

Edit: at the heya his first keiko in sumo maybe and injured immediately?

Sadogatake -  Gandolga Bilguun?  ガントルガ・ビルグーン

Seems that's the same spelling as Terunofuji's "Gantulga" - would be intrigued to see if Sadogatake gives him Kotonofuji or Kotonoteru (Onoe has got Fujinoteru so I don't see why not!)

In any case will be fun for trainspotters to see a pair of Gantulgas or Gandolgas eventually bookending the banzuke

Yes... we have a GANTULGA pair.

Гантулга Билгүүн in the Mongolian press: = Gantulga Bilguun in the roman alphabet.  I'm not sure which is his given name as sometimes the order is switched to accommodate foreign press; and there is often inconsistent order on the heya web sites.  (There's a lengthy discussion somewhere in the forum on how names get switched and given versus paternal/maternal versus last/first)

Also

Алтан-Очирын Асгахад in the Mongolian press: == Altan-Ochir (his father's name) Asgakhad (given name).  Sometimes spelled Asgahad, but the "kh" is the outer Mongolian Cyrillic preferred translation.

The given name always prevails in Mongolia.  On the street, "hey, what's up Asgakhad?"    Any form title...... Dr. Asgakhad, Mr Asgakhad, President Asgakhad.

Delgerbayar (Oshoma), future Ms15TD from Naruto, and Ersin (Ersin), future Sd100TD from Kise, are listed as banzuke-gai for this basho; their db entries, however, state that after being listed as Bg for 9/2021, they will take their ranks this basho.

Query: is an Ms15TD included in the expanded promotion zone meaning that 7-zip yusho gets him into juryo?

Probably an academic point with Ryuden involved.

The one precedent we have says no, but I don't know if it's still applicable.
