Kintamayama 45,530 Posted November 30, 2021 The YDC are demanding that degeiko be allowed again. "The runnerups to Terunofuji mostly did not look good. For them to look better and be more competitive and really challenge him, degeiko needs to be allowed immediately. It's the only way other top rikishi can better themselves, is what I'm hearing," said chairman Yano. Hakkaku rijicho said he is consulting with experts and will then decide. 2
Reonito 1,522 Posted November 30, 2021 This seems outside their job description to, you know, deliberate on the Yokozuna. 2

Perhaps the deliberations on whether or not they approved of his 15-0 yusho were short and they needed something else to chat about.
Benevolance 2,511 Posted November 30, 2021 The YDC was arguing about Hakuho's sumo for about an hour before someone pointed out he wasn't active anymore. 4
Ripe 73 Posted November 30, 2021 Did they even begin to consider that runner ups didn't look good because healthy Terunofuji is at least one if not two classes better then them? There is a reason why none of them managed to take advantage of Hakuho and Kakuryu being injured and absent to make a tsuna run... and why Terunofuji had little problem getting back to Ozeki and getting the rope. So I'm not so sure having degeiko will help with them looking better... it might make them look less bad but that's about it. At this point, I'm not sure that #74 is currently on banzuke...
Seiyashi 4,108 Posted November 30, 2021 Technically the YDC can flex somewhat to talk about the ozeki, if one considers the ozeki to be yokozuna-potentiates. Not sure Abi is within their purview unless they know something we don't, though. And I think they're being unfair to Abi and Takakeisho, really, because they did show quite significantly improved sumo in their own styles over what we've seen before. The rest of sanyaku was the letdown, with the possible exception of Mitakeumi, and then only just. I don't think it's as bad as #74 not being on the banzuke, but we might go through another record-setting yokozuna promotion drought before we see him. Among other things, they're likely to insist on him changing his shikona to something with a bit more hinkaku than "#74." 2
LLCoolKay 24 Posted December 1, 2021 I wonder if they realize that allowing joint training will benefit Terunofuji just as much? Not that he doesn't have a number of quality training partners at home.

It's especially inevitable when there's little to do in the Yokozuna Deciding department. Next step: position paper on Ozeki-Themed Bento.
