The unofficial Nikkan grand awards have appeared - first the escaped money award, most not won kensho. It goes to Shodai, 582 kensho in lost bouts, about 17.5 million yen. The "Save energy" Nikkan award of the 10th Nikkan ozumo grand awards goes to Onosho, 4.8s on average, 2nd Daieisho with 6.2s, 3rd Tamawashi with 6.6s. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202112160000363.html

The "Top guys killer award" of the plain maegashira who this year had 15 or more bouts with opponents from sanyaku or above (they use the plain sanyaku definition of k/s) and has the best winning ratio goes to Daieisho: 9-6 with k/s, 5-8 with y/o - total of 14-14, 0.5 winning ratio

The Nikkan greatest variety award for most different kimarite in his wins goes to Terutsuyoshi: 20 different in just 42 wins. Terunofuji had 18 (77), 17 for Kiribayama (45) and Hoshoryu (46) and Kotonowaka 16 (44) - the others all had more wins this year than Terutsuyoshi.

Kensho - the get rich quickly award: 10 bouts had 34 or more kensho this year, the most was 49 on day 15 of the Aki basho, Terunofuji-Shodai, and the one who profited most was of course Terunofuji: he had 6 of these bouts and won 4. Last year there were 8 big pack bouts and 7 of them with Takakeisho, who was the big award winner with 6-1 then, this year he was in 5 big pack bouts and won 2. Shodai was in 4 and lost them all (see his award above). Winning all of those big bouts they were in were Hakuho (1) and Asanoyama (2), Mitakeumi was 1-1.

Time

- the love sumo award for those with the longest average time in all their bouts. It goes of course to Takayasu, but Nikkan tells that he was top last year as well with 23.5s and that he had expanded that by nearly 8s, while listing him with 23.5s again. Runner up is again Takarafuji with 22s, expanded by more than 8s - appropriately, the 2 had a 3min. bout last basho. Ichinojo had 19.5s, Kiribayama 16.6s, Terunofuji 12.2s.

Longest makuuchi bout this year was Takayasu-Shimanoumi with 3m32s, also last basho. Bouts with more than 2min were 7 each for Takayasu and Takarafuji, 6 for Ichinojo, including the 2m40s with then waiting for the mono-ii conference hansoku result.

- the "I won, so it's good award", the longest average time in bouts they won. Again Takayasu with now 32.1s - if the true overall time was about 31s, that is not that much more effort for a win. Kiribayama 27.2s, Takarafuji 24.4s, Ichinojo 23.6s and Tochinoshin 16.4s.

- and the losing bouts: here Takarafuji is top with 25.8s, Takayasu 24.3s, Ichinojo 19.7s, Tobizaru 17.4s, Kotonowaka 16.7s.

Only 1 kinboshi this year, Daieisho vs. Terunofuji at the Aki basho, last year had 8. Unofficial ginboshi (maegashira wins vs. ozeki) were 44! Shodai handed out 20, Takakeisho 16, Asanoyama 7 and Terunofuji 1. Endo won 5, collecting 4 were Kiribayama, Hoshoryu, Myogiryu, Hokutofuji, Daieisho and Wakatakakage.

Likely the last bunch of Nikkan awards

The rare skill award - for being the only one to use a rare kimarite in makuuchi that year

Terutsuyoshi had 3 of those, utchari, ashitori and shitatehineri, Terunofuji and Hoshoryu had 2, kainahineri und kimetaoshi vs. ipponzeoi and uchigake, Endo had hikkake, Tobizaru kubinage, Chiyoshoma susoharai and Kiribayama okurihikiotoshi.

 

Up-down award - biggest sum of movements on the banzuke

Endo moved 27 places in total, Kotonowaka 26, 23 each for Chiyonokuni and Kotoeko

 

"Getting it without work" award - most fusensho/fusenpai, 17 this year, 5 each at Haru and Aki, last basho only the day 1 late absence of Tochinshin

Most of it went to Takayasu, 3 wins like that this year and he had 1 fusen loss as well. Chiyonokuni had 2 losses and one win. Also 2 losses had Endo and Takakeisho.

 

Make the gyoji cry award - most bouts that got a mono-ii

Shodai 7, Takanosho 6, Endo&Okinoumi 5

Ending with a win by the presumed loser, either via sashichigae or a win in the torinaoshi bout, had Takanosho and Endo as those with the biggest luck: 3 times, next Hoshoryu with 2 times

The presumed winner having to win again in a torinaoshi bout to get his win happened to 5 rikishi, once each: Onosho, Hoshoryu, Chiyonokuni, Takqayasu, Takanosho

 

1 team award - most yusho in any division

As usual it goes to Isegahama, 6 times this year

4 times by Kise-beya, 3 times by Oitekaze, Shikoroyama, Miyagino, Takadagawa, Takasago

 

Fighting spirit - the yearly sum of the daily polls I post in Spirited rikishi

Takakeisho had 16 times position no.1, Daieisho 14, Meisei 7

Most times in the rankings was also Takakeisho, 40 times, Takanosho 30, Meisei 28

With 3 points for 1, 2 for 2 and 1 for 3, Takakeisho has 90 points, Daieisho 61, Meisei 51, Takanosho 45, Wakatakakage 35

Takakeisho for several years is fix for number 1 here

Kachikoshi in all 6 basho had Terunofuji and Mitakeumi

- makekoshi in all were Kagayaki and Tochinoshin

Hmm. What happened in 2017 that the award wasn't given out? Multiple top rank absences, Kisenosato's injury, and Harumafuji's little brouhaha?

Last year for the first time Harumafuji got this excellence award - though Kisenosato had most wins of the year.

Hakuho has already received the most wins of the year award and most of the time got the Hochi award as well, but his speech and conduct disqualified him this year. Mitakeumi hasn't yet reached the level of excellence and Kisenosato was kyujo 4 basho - thus nobody was good enough this year.

Huh. Hoshoryu debuted last year. Or did they think (not without some reason) that Midorifuji and Ichiyamamoto, being the only debutants this year if I queried right, were both unworthy of the award?

And if they were stretching it to 2020, IMO Kiribayama was robbed. He's certainly lower profile than Hoshoryu, but has shown the most improvement in his sumo, whereas Hoshoryu has moments of brilliance but really lacks consistency.

Uncle Asashoryu won it 20 years ago, this time it's the 58th award. I still haven't found a list of past awards. Mitakeumi won it in 2016 with a debut Kyushu 2015, likely there was another with Aki debut and win the next year.

Elected among 14 candidates (maybe double digit winners) by a committee, like the Hochi award, but no info of how many votes and voters. (Something to do with him being from the same Chubu area as the awarding company?).

He entered makuuchi already in Kyushu 2015, in his 5th basho! Of the 14 (relatively) new ones, he was with 3 double digit results this year the one with the most of that and the only who made it to sanyaku. One kanto-sho as well and 3 basho in a row winning against ozeki.

I missed this award in 2015 - Ichinojo had 3 newcomer awards in 2014, with a debut in Aki 2014, but that was a hell of a debut

The Hochi pro sports award sumo category seems to have been dropped, it is not on the list for this year.
Or not awarded because Ichinojo got the freshman award? Other sports aren't treated like that, one more award Hakuho is deprived of this year?
