Eikokurai 3,437 Posted January 1, 2022 Just a bit of fun for the year, this is a tracker for sumo win streaks inspired by New Zealand rugby’s Ranfurly Shield. That’s a shield won by a challenge system. The holder retains the shield for as long as they’re winning, but then whoever beats them takes the shield and tries to hold it as long as possible. We’ll start with Terunofuji as the ‘holder’ since he won the most recent bout in 2021. Whoever beats Terunofuji first takes the ‘shield’ until he himself loses. We’ll see at the end of the basho (and year) who held it most and for longest.
Asojima 2,874 Posted January 1, 2022 Sounds a lot like a reverse version of the Torchbearer game. Maybe we could call it the Bear Torcher.

Ah … it seems similar, yeah. I just looked it up. Not quite as formalized as that, but same kind of concept. The difference lies I guess in that it goes to the ‘hot’ rikishi at the top of the banzuke. Edited January 1, 2022 by Eikokurai
Gurowake 4,104 Posted January 1, 2022 (edited) I propose the following: we start with the first basho that has individual bout results in the database, with the rikishi who is highest on that banzuke holding the "shield". We use whatever results are in the database, regardless of how scant the data is. If a given rikishi retires or otherwise does not have a bout in the database after winning or retaining the shield, it passes to whoever is highest on the banzuke for the tournament after the one where the last bout was fought. Playoff bouts in the database will be considered, because why not? We go basho by basho one post at a time, allowing various people to contribute their database research while providing a collection of results that appears slowly over time. If you plan on contributing, just enter a post with the next basho so people know it's being worked on, then edit the post when you're done once it's clear you have the next post in line with the history secured. The first basho with results data is Natsu 1909. The highest rikishi on the banzuke was Hitachiyama, who lost Day 3 to Tachiyama, who lost Day 7 to Ikarigata, who lost Day 9 to Otori, who held on to it Day 10 with a draw, which was the last day of the basho.
