Gurowake 4,100 Posted January 1, 2022 (edited) See for background, and as of this posting, the first decade of results available (plus Natsu 1909). We come into 1920 with Oshio holding the shield. Recall this is supposed to be collaborative. Post the next basho name by itself to "claim" that you're working on that basho, then edit the post with the details. Or just leave all the work to me. As was said, do I truly have anything better to do New Year's Day? Edited January 1, 2022 by Gurowake

Gurowake 4,100 Posted January 1, 2022 (edited) Haru 1922 Komaizumi retires without an additional bout. Tochigiyama is highest ranked rikishi on next banzuke. We could have some divergence here based on when you decide Komaizumi retired, since he might have retired last basho, or at some point during this basho, but the database says he was absent all 10 days and at least during modern times, the absences would have stopped the day he retired. That's unlikely to be recorded correctly this far back in history, but it's all we have. Actually, if he retired during this basho, by the criteria I set forth before, we'd still look to the top ranked rikishi on the following basho's banzuke to pick back up. Gurowake 4,100 Posted January 1, 2022 (edited) Natsu 1924 Tochigiyama loses day 6 to Imizugawa, who loses Day 8 to Hitachishima, who loses Day 9 to Akutsugawa, who loses Day 10 to Yamanishiki, who holds it Day 11. With there being a different number of days per basho now, I'm going to keep track of the number of days there should be per decade explicitly, instead of just making sure it adds up to a multiple of ten. This is awesome work. It goes far beyond any expectations I had for this idea. By all means, continue if you are happy to, but please know I don’t expect you to! You’ve already done enough. Happy new year! Oh, about the complications, I guess we just give it to the guy who gets the freebie. It counts towards his basho record after all. I've heard of things like this before and find them rather interesting in terms of seeing how the shield moves through teams/players that might not be particularly close to the top of the sport. If other people don't want to contribute, well, I'm not going to make them obviously. I'm just doing this in a way that leaves the door open for people to help if they'd like.
