I wonder if Japan will also allow foreigners in again by then. I wouldn't go though, if it's after being interned for 6 days in a hotel - and then the rest of two weeks in quarantine at your staying location, plus someone has to pick you up and take you there, if you can't use taxi or public transports, like in December/January for the Japanese nationals allowed back in.

At the moment the rules are less harsh, but most of the world is still banned from entry https://www.mofa.go.jp/ca/fna/page4e_001053.html

And if it is possible to fly will be another issue - from here the main route is via Siberia

Most airlines coming from anywhere other than Asia or the west coast of North America have rerouted, adding hours to the flight time. Assuming you're in Europe, those flights are rerouting via Alaska and northern Canada, which adds between 3 and 5 hours.

In any case, while it's not nice, it's probably a moot point because someone who's never seen sumo would have a better chance of winning Guess The Banzuke than any tourist has of getting into Japan without a quarantine in 2022.

Poster and ticketing for Natsu 2022 out.

Whichever design house the NSK is collaborating with (or whoever is doing this in-house) has really got good ideas. The poster this time looks like a homage to traditional Buddhist mandala art (typically geometric circular or concentric designs representing various concepts such as the spheres of consciousness, planes of the world, etc).

The sekitori dohyō-iri, taken with a slightly panoramic angle (from the NHK roundup, perhaps?), comprises the circular elements, while the top 5 sekitori (Terunofuji, the three ōzeki, and Wakatakakage (a harbinger of things to come?)) fill out the image at the centre and corners. Bonus points for using the inner sides of the mizuhikimaku (the curtain hanging from the tsuriyane, black on the outside with the NSK's mon on it, but pink on the inside), that was already on the background of the dohyo-iri elements(!), to pad the image, giving the whole image hints of a lotus flower.

A very elegant, parsimonious, and neat composition when considering the elements, but unfortunately the relatively riotous colours of the keshō-mawashi make the end effect rather chaotic, despite only using 6 rikishi (the same three rikishi have been just rotated around the inner and outer rings). The effect feels somewhat similar to the poster with the attempted homage to the Tokyo Olympics poster, where the idea is there but the execution falls short.

As for ticketing, most of the masuseki have been sold out or is going fast, while chair seating remains relatively available.

PS: Also, should this thread perhaps be shifted to the Honbasho Talk subforum to fulfil the purpose of being the Natsu 2022-related thread?

Fully. The idea is incredible (and also reminds me of some of those old Beastie Boys videos with the fisheye lens) but I wonder if it could have been better executed as an illustration where the kesho-mawashi don't need to be exact replicas and the colour palette can be managed better.

They are always most of the way there when it comes towards making NSK branded merch (and I'd count this as merch given that they're advertising its availability at 7-11) to be really iconic and collectible but they seem to just miss when it comes to the final product.

Agreed. There's a certain degree of technical competence to the composition as well, considering the four non-yokozuna have been positioned very cleverly to hide the "seams" of the circle and maintain the illusion of a panorama of rikishi, before you notice that it's the same rikishi repeated.

Who's the 4th non-Yokozuna?  I assume 3 are Ozeki.  I guess Wakatakakage?  I can't see the full poster on the preview and I'm not going to twitter.

Have they discontinued the 15 days ticket packages for the chair seats?

These packages were never on sale on the sumo.pia site, and I think they were connected to the sale of tickets for the day - if those tickets get available again, so may the packages

Just like for the Hatsu basho, the kokugikan museum has a special Hakuho exhibition, with some extra items and features: the chance to sit on the zabuton the rikishi sit on at the dohyo while waiting for the bout.

There also will again be talk events with oyakata, the full schedule will be announced on the museum page http://hochi.news/articles/20220422-OHT1T51236.html

After last at the Hatsu basho 2020, there will be rikishi bento again on sale at the basho. Usually for yokozuna and ozeki, but this time only the Terunofuji bento in limited numbers, 2nd time for his bento after being ozeki 2015-17. The rikishi themselves chose the ingredients, the bento for Shodai and Mitakeumi still have to be developed, the 2 were promoted in Corona times. http://hochi.news/articles/20220426-OHT1T51198.html

A novelty: also the tickets for the day are sold at the 7/11 convenience stores now - no tickets are sold at the kokugikan https://www.sumo.or.jp/Admission/ticket/May/purchase/611/#tojitu

Will this be a permanent measure or a temporary COVID measure?

JP has announced the possibility of tourism by June, so there is a chance this information might be pertinent for international fans considering flying in for Nagoya or later.
