Kensho Haru 2022

Recommended Posts

And new: Moderna Japan will have kensho, as an appeal for vaccination -  the 3rd vaccination in Japan is going slow. They place them on the (also not so) young rikishi: Abi, Ura and Kotonowaka. From the company about the kensho: "The anxiety about the future increases among young people with the spread of Corona. We include the feeling of support for them." https://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXZQOUC117ZO0R10C22A3000000/

So on Day 1 there were more kensho for the Daieisho-Shodai bout than for Mitakeumi's first bout at Ozeki or local boy Takakeisho? Would not have expected that.

The last bout always has the most kensho, but the 2nd to last also has more than others and the top ozeki bout has as well - with one yokozuna that's the same bout. Today Ichinojo profited from that, same number as for the new ozeki, who is top in individual kensho this basho.

Day 5 http://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2203_05.pdf

The win today was not enough to bring Tamawashi into the rankings, komusubi Takanosho brought him no kensho, both lack sponsors.

Just to add to Akinomaki's valuable attempts to highlight new kensho, I came across another new prize sponsor: Food Technology Engineering (FTE), who on February 22nd announced that they would offer prize money for the first time in their history in the 2022 Spring Tournament.  Their primary targets are Mitakeumi and Abi.  Clearly, the executives have a good sense of who the current favourites are.

FYI, Abi's kensho haul on Day 4 totalled 9 prizes.  The torikumi sheet, however, listed a total of 8 kensho registered for that bout.  With Ishiura's withdrawal, it would seem that one of the 10 kensho listed for Ishiura's bout against Endo was redirected to Abi's bout last minute.

Sadly, I have been unable to identify which one it was.  I have, however, determined that it appeared in the first round of 5 banners that were not fully visible in Abema TV's broadcast (the second round of 4 banners were all accounted for).

For the sake of documenting kensho distribution patterns, I feel that it is important to identify these last-minute transfers.

I bet Shodai wished he had won yesterday against Ura with 13 kensho on the line, rather than today with only 5...

Hey, a win is a win, and Shodai needs wins more than prize money!  Although the money wouldn't hurt in keeping him in high-end wrist watches!  But securing his Ozeki salary will also help. ;-)

Looks like Mitakeumi will finish top, the one with most individual kensho, today with the new last bout and a few redistributed extra kensho. He should get 3 more chances for the last bout big pack.

If no one withdraws and Shodai is deemed worthy to be in the last match with Takakeisho, Mitakeumi has only 2 more days as the last match: 9 and 12.  Day 15 resets to the Day 1 order; it doesn't continue the pattern.  Or at least that's how it worked last time I paid attention.

Great point but that's a big if.

Looking at the kana chosen there, I'm surprised that the Japanese decided that the 'r' in "Moderna" was worth pronouncing.  For instance, hamburger in kana is ハンバーガー, ignoring both r's in favor of elongated vowels (and slightly different vowels).  Can any non-rhotic English speakers chime in as to whether they pronounce the r there?  Is the "rna" ending in Moderna meaningful to the name in terms of the protein RNA?

I mean, the whole company is based entirely around mRNA technology, so that has to be the origin of the name, with a nice play on "modern"

I was thinking about that, but I'm used to Shodai being skipped somehow (and expect that he's kyujo then)

Even with the really big pack today, Shodai didn't make it into the rankings - will he be in it in the end?

Even in the 2nd to last bout Mitakeumi got a big bunch of 18 vs. 22 for the last one of Takakeisho, and then Shodai: with just 6, he still got not enough to be in the rankings

Same big pack of 22 for Mitakeumi as on day 6, he gets it on a weekday, Takakeisho only had this much yesterday because it was nakabi. Shodai made it into the rankings with a pack of 12, vs. Hoshoryu as a valuable opponent. Tomorrow he has an extra fat chance against Endo, which would bring him to 4th place - the top 3 are still in reach for the least loved ozeki (especially sponsor-wise). Endo had the rare luck to profit from his kensho popularity: 18 vs. the home basho ozeki in the 3rd to last bout because of him.

Shodai got that big pack, more than the other ozeki recently: 23, thanks to Endo. But tomorrow he only has 4 on his bout and both Endo and Kotonowaka can jump ahead.

Wakatakakage at last in the rankings. Even as new sekiwake he still has no fix kensho on him and in the beginning mostly had only one kensho on his bouts.

Takayasu got the big pack for Mitakeumi. He, Kotonowaka and Wakatakakage have the chance to make further jumps in the rankings with the big packs from their ozeki bouts tomorrow and likely from all remaining bouts as well, especially Wakatakakage, who has to get them according to schedule - but his packs may stay smaller.
