Aoiyama is properly Japanese

Recommended Posts

The government daily gazette from today lists so far Bulgarian Aoiyama as one of those who received the permit to become Japanese, with his real name in katakana, ダニエル・イバノフ. https://kanpou.npb.go.jp/20220316/20220316h00695/20220316h006950006f.html

He now is ready to become oyakata

If he does so, second Caucasian and Bulgarian, after Kotooshu.

DB is having connectivity issues now, but are any of the Kasugano oyakata close to retirement?

He has the Japanese nationality now, the official way to report it is by saying he got the permit to get it

Kasugano hasn't had any trouble securing kabu for his many sekitori over the last decade, so I doubt Aoiyama will be limited to in-house options.

Purely speculative, and perhaps this belongs in the stock exchange/kabu babu thread, but two obvious options might be

* Irumagawa (which branched out from Kasugano to begin with and could be available next year), or
* Potentially in a few years perhaps a deal could be swung to send the Fujigane name back to Nishonoseki ichimon in a trade for Aoiyama's former stablemaster's Tagonoura name (the current holder would certainly be on a list of candidates who might have to shut up shop early for one reason or another)

I had convinced myself that was from Bowie, but instead of admitting I'm wrong, I'm just going to say they ripped off Bowie's sound.

Aoiyama now has a proper Japanese real name, 古田亘右 Furuta ・ Kousuke, the NSK announced the change today. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202204180000701.html

Kōsuke is his shikona given name, but the link of Furuta isn't immediately obvious. His introduction to sumō was via ex-ōzeki Kotoōshū, himself a fellow Bulgarian, and his first shishō was ex-Kushimaumi (real surname Kushima), so it's neither of them. Nor is it the honmyō surname of any of the oyakata at Kasugano. He's married to a fellow Bulgarian as well so it isn't his wife's surname as with ex-Kyokutenhō.

Two mechanisms I can think of but can't confirm at the moment: Furuta is the surname of someone fairly significant in helping him get settled in Japan - so a sponsor, maybe from a koenkai or something - or it's formed via a calque, the kanji literally meaning "Old Fields". As for the first, the surname Furuta is more popularly associated with a baseball player (for all we know Aoiyama could be a huge baseball fan), but it also does seem to turn up a bit (there was a toriteki in Isegahama named Furuta Wataru, with three characters in common(!) around the start of the Heisei period), so this is the more likely explanation. The calque explanation runs into a dead end, since the natural candidate for a calque would be his hometown, but Elhovo etymologically derives from the alder tree so there's no obvious link there.

The possible root Fulata is a dry hole.

Also, Furata is the English name of a Japanese candy company.
