If there is no plan to solve the db instability issues, might it be feasible to move the game entry method?

I'd be willing to lend a (technical) hand on getting matters like this resolved for June.

I made zero progress on writing new code to programmatically get better at this than my own intuition. My hastily thrown together last minute (human) picks:

The DB is kiboshing any attempt at a data pull, if I even could reverse engineer the optimal data storage structure for it in the first place (relative script kiddie here). The amount of data is no joke to be running a bad data structure, although given the instability issues it might just be a question of getting data offline to begin with and sorting it later.

I am already on the entry list, I made my pick successfully a few days ago. Just publish my pick as also in previous GTB.

I notice that the site is up and working better than I've seen it work in a week now, shame that's no good! I know a few people who would normally have entered who didn't, but hopefully there'll be a backup in place for next time, because until something is done about the server, it would be foolish to rely on the site at this point.

Honestly, at this point a Google Form would serve us better: easy to make, free and won't go down.

I managed to submit the form (I'm the last entry on the entry list), here's my entry:

  Reveal hidden contents

Hopefully that formats correctly.

So like 4 months ago I did the banzuke query to show rankings for 7 consecutive basho and this was a pretty efficient way to grab all the pertinent information for the banzuke history from 1994 to the present (I think I chose 1994 for reasons having to do with the contest). There was a little bit of edge case data to pick up - for example newer guys like Ishizaki were missed, but I think everything in the top division was fully covered.

I was able to make incremental progress on the algorithm but some of the ideas I've had that would probably make it fairly bulletproof have not made it down the keyboard yet. I think my code right now would fairly consistently finish approximately 2nd to last in GTB.

EDIT to mention I think there were substantial changes to the text I was quoting and the changes propagate into my quote (???) Yikes

Just having that banzuke history in a searchable format somewhere reliable would be awesome.

Interesting .... I'm incentivized to expose this data through my employer if that's not too offputting. I can discuss over DM.

As far as I'm aware, the entry list only displays the people who used the actual entry form through the website. I have no idea if it will eventually have the people who had to email theirs, but those have to be entered into the system manually, which seems like a difficult process from how much Moti seems to be dreading having to do that...

Not me, Andoreasu does it. I feel very uncomfortable asking him to do it.

Ah, my mistake then. Still, for the sake of everyone running GTB I hope we don't have to go the manual route again in the future. Pain for both the people entering and the people running the show. Either by the DB server having more reliability now that Doitsuyama's implemented a fix to mitigate the bot issue, or having alternate means of submitting entries like some have mentioned.

He can reach out to me at the Hoshotakamoto email I used to submit my picks. I would be interested in enabling the user to submit picks early and see them / modify them up to the last minute before the submission deadline. As discussed elsewhere in this thread I might provide the community a backup option to the not-always-reliable sumodb querying functionality.

If we are thinking of features - perhaps once you pick a wrestler for a certain spot on the banzuke his name no longer appears in the drop down list. That is one that would help me out.  I always make a mistake (ugh, I forgot XXX) and then I have to rework the thing.
