It's likely, yes. The other question is whether Hōsh and Daieishō swap places.
Taliesin 68 Posted July 24, 2022 I think there's a quota for Ozeki wins per basho at around 23. And with Mitakeumi out early the other two had to make most of it by themselves this time.

Tigerboy1966 1,474 Posted July 24, 2022 Eight years on from the best makuuchi debut in modern sumo history, Ichinojo finally gets his yusho.
Thorbjarn 215 Posted July 24, 2022 Takakeisho performed so much as if there never were any injury troubles, the guy on the PA got confused and declared Terunofuji the winner just because he didn't trust his own eyes.
sumoforever 27 Posted July 24, 2022 Congratulations to Ichinojo on a good yusho. He beat the solo yokozuna and two ozeki, in addition to beating both komusubi and both sekiwake. A good performance indeed!
Akinomaki 40,763 Posted July 24, 2022 (edited) A weird Basho, but with my favourite rikishi winning it, I won't say anything negative about it anymore Edited July 24, 2022 by Akinomaki
Seiyashi 4,108 Posted July 24, 2022 (edited) Either Takakeishō took a lot of inspiration from Shōdai's bout yesterday, or there is something wrong with Terunofuji's balance. That's the second time in two days the yokozuna has been caught bent over double out of the tachiai and been made to pay for it. Pity Ura couldn't win earlier to force a playoff with triple 11-4 records. A never-ending tomoesen feels like the most fitting ending to this utter mess of a basho. But nonetheless, congratulations to Ichinojō and I hope that means his injury woes are mostly behind him. Edited July 24, 2022 by Seiyashi
Kaninoyama 1,818 Posted July 24, 2022 Takakeisho looked like his old self this basho. I'm sure he's going to rue yesterday's loss. And Ichinojo looked very much like the kaibutsu he was during his Makuuchi debut, finally fulfilling his promise.

WAKATAKE 2,671 Posted July 24, 2022 Ichinojo! His hiramaku yusho now makes this five consecutive calendar years with a hiramaku yusho since Tochinoshin started the trend in 2018 - 2018 Tochinoshin - 2019 Asanoyama - 2020 Tokushoryu, Terunofuji - 2021 Daieisho - 2022 Ichinojo 4

Not sure the feat of two different M17s winning a yusho in one calendar year will ever be repeated. Edited July 24, 2022 by sumoforever
Akinomaki 40,763 Posted July 24, 2022 Michinoku struggled a bit with the cup presentation, I thought they couldn't decide who should present the prime minister's cup, but then a government official did it, really rare in recent times and a bit astonishing for a basho in this situation
Seiyashi 4,108 Posted July 24, 2022 There's an awful load of laughs coming out this early in the yūshō interview. I'm intrigued to know what was actually said, and whether Ichinojō's awkwardness from being put on the spot has anything got to do with it.

It might mean we might see a substantial change in COVID measures after this basho, especially as it doesn't seem that the jungyō will be cancelled.

His Japanese isn't the greatest and I doubt he'd ever win a public speaking contest even in his own language. Plus I'm sure he's more nervous doing the interview than sumoing with a yusho on the line. Edited July 24, 2022 by Kaninoyama

Personal experience from every time I must give a public speech in English: a thick accent betrays nervousness and emotion in general.
Akinomaki 40,763 Posted July 24, 2022 After a long question he said "could you please repeat that", to the shortened question if he thought he'd get a yusho after all this time in sumo he replied, "I thought that."
Eikokurai 3,437 Posted July 24, 2022 (edited) Damn, I timed my journey home for the worst time and missed the whole finale. Pleased to see Ichi took the yusho. His previous 13-2 and 14-1 JY’s would have won him the cup more often than not, so to have lost out a third time would have been cruel. Also, good to see Shodai make 10 wins meaning both surviving Ozeki made double digits. Edited July 24, 2022 by Eikokurai
