Kensho Natsu 2022

Recommended Posts

Morinaga goes back to pre-Corona times: no digital voting this time and no result on twitter. With 87% allowed into the kokugikan, the votes take place only there for those who buy the chocolate, and the hall announcer tells the result after the dohyo-iri - it usually can be heard on Abema. I'll add it later if I find it, usually it is on Terunofuji, but who knows how long he'll be in the basho.

Even if he drops out after tomorrow, Terunofuji is basically safe as the no.1 now. With the ozeki as weak as this, the rest is still wide open. Shodai has to gambarize to get into the rankings at all. Last basho he made it on day 9, this time the nakabi win vs. Hoshoryu is the only time he got a pack of more than 10. His bout tomorrow is against sponsorless Tamawashi, just 8 kensho in the last ozeki bout, the sponsors really have given up on Shodai now. Tamawashi can get back into the rankings with a win.

Tomorrow against popular Tobizaru Shodai can again get a medium pack, if he avoids kadoban. Only a win against at least an ozeki will bring him firmly into the ranks though. The last one will maybe have more than 50 in the end and we'll have an unusually even distribution of the kensho money - below the yokozuna that is.

Shodai next against Mitakeumi can get his so far best pack of the basho and secure into the rankings, and we know he's best with his back to the wall/ the river (haisui no jin).

Next chance for Shodai tomorrow in the last bout with again his biggest pack so far. To be in the rankings in the end one may even need 60 - maybe a record.

Doesn't look like Shodai will make it into the rankings - again a really big pack in reach against Takakeisho next, but why should he suddenly win against an ozeki fighting for kachikoshi with nothing to gain for him but the kensho pack. Hoshoryu can reach the 60 mark tomorrow, Endo can surpass it. 2nd to 4th place are still interchangeable.

Kiribayama won and so we have only 59 for the last ranking position. Shodai failed to make it there, Mitakeumi dropped out of the top 3 in the end.
