Aki 2022 discussion (results)

There's a kyokai twitter with Hakuho and Kakuryu showing the hand-written sansho sheet, but I'm having trouble figuring out everything and I don't think they put it in the tweet.  I'll edit this post as I figure more things out:

The only thing I know right away is that I see the names of Takayasu and Tamawashi, and someone whose name ends in -fuji.

The -fuji is Hokutofuji, not Nishikifuji.

Takayasu gets a kanto-sho.  Hokutofuji must win to get a kanto-sho.

Tamawashi gets the shukun-sho.

Shukun-sho for Tamawashi and Tobizaru (conditional)

Kanto-Sho for Takayasu and Hokutofuji (conditional)

Gino-Sho for Wakatakage

Yeah, I got Tobizaru right as you posted it (not many people have the Tobi kanji, but recognizing it was hard on that scale).  I was about to dive into the last one for which I couldn't recognize any of the kanji easily.*

There appears to be something different in the conditions for Tobizaru and Hokutofuji.  I think it's clear that Hokutofuji's says he must win, and I don't know what else Tobizaru's would say, but it doesn't appear to be the same thing.  At least, there's apparently one less character (the sun/day kanji from Hokutofuji's isn't in Tobizaru's), and if the second kanji in Tobizaru's condition is the "win" kanji, it's a lot more garbled than the one written for Hokutofuji's.

*OK, it's really only the first kanji that's totally unrecognizable compared to its printed form, but obviously I was focused on getting that one first.  I can definitely get the general idea of the second two kanji even if I didn't know which ones specifically, but that first one is a total mess.  I'm guessing people used to reading handwriting don't have a problem with it as much, but this is about the only handwritten Japanese I've really tried to read.

I now also realize it probably would have been easier to look for people with 3 previous Gino-sho, as it happens that there's no one else eligible for one with that number previously.

I think the condition for both is to win today. They probably just forgot to write the 日 kanji in 今日 for Tobizaru.

Too bad. My favourite condition for the Monkey to win would have been sprouting wings.

Well, yeah, there's no way for it to be anything else.  It's obviously not "if so-and-so wins the yusho" (which might be reasonable for a Shukun-sho), as there's clearly no other name there, and there's no other condition that makes sense.  It's just not written exactly the same way.

Chiyodaigo trying to get another KO with haymakers of the type only he throws, but eventually grabbed and escorted out by Takahashi, who looked dizzy afterwards. I do not like Chiyo at all. If he wants to hurt people, like he's said, why doesn't he do MMA, boxing, or kickboxing? There are many places in Japan to train for combat sports where damaging your opponent is a goal.

YAY, Ura KK!

Oho needs to learn some tawara-dancing. He handed this to Ura.

Kitanifuji said the fact that Ura was the aggressor might have stopped the dead body rule applying. Still looked like they were out at the same time to me.

Oho a grand 3-17 (one of those wins a fusen) over the last 5 days of his 4 makuuchi tournaments. He needs to find another gear down the stretch.

Edit: Not sure what's confusing you @Kotomiyama ?

Oho really has a kachikoshi allergy, eh? In his Makuuchi debut he was on 7 wins for the last five days and missed every opportunity to get an 8th. An almost mirror basho to this one. Last time around he scraped 8 wins only thanks to a fusen and didn’t get the KK at the first opportunity.

It hasn’t had much attention, but Ryuden has returned from suspension with vengeance. After a Makushita yusho and then two in Juryo, he’s got himself a possible JY on his return to the top division, winning 10 bouts in succession.

Oho has clearly a day 10-15 problem. Even in Juryo, he managed to get a positive turnout only in July 2021, when he was J12.

In the meanwhile, Tobizaru just earned his 10-5 at M1e, his first Shunkun-Sho, and I'd say also is due promotion to Komusubi! The Monkey flies!

Last thought. There will be a logjam at M1-2 with Kotonowaka and Meisei KK, Midorifuji 7-8 and a bunch of guys claiming a M1 spot. I hope the Committee will accept to solve the matter by opening more san'yaku slots instead than down-promoting like hell.

Tamawashi is still not the oldest yūshō winner apparently - that record belongs to Tachiyama at 38 years and 9 months (so Tamawashi has to win next Aki to beat that record).

And now for the hanazumo before the awards ceremony...

All credit to Tamawashi. He was unstoppable this basho.

I'd say that him having the first 13-2 yusho since Hatsu, also the ex-aequo strongest results of this year, speaks volumes about his feat.

Ha. For all my permutationing, it all ends the most straightforward way it could: with Tamawashi just winning.
