Sumo Spiffy 579 Posted June 8, 2022 (edited) I was digging through some old data and found one banzuke, Haru 1933, that had numerous makuuchi and juryo wrestlers with BS by their names instead of a rank. These rikishi were also the only ones on their levels, as opposed to there being an east and a west. Does anyone know what this stands for? Edit: I should note that these wrestlers were returning after competing for a rival organization in 1932, so I know why they're being separated. However, other rikishi wrestled for that organization longer, and when they returned, they were marked "OB" instead. I'm also curious what OB stands for, but since this is the only time "BS" was used, I'm more intrigued by that. Akinomaki 40,780 Posted June 8, 2022 BS is besseki, other place. You can see it on the Japanese side. The kyokai made two banzuke then, one for the returners after the Shunjuen incident. They are those listed as BS. 1

Akinomaki 40,780 Posted June 8, 2022 The DB was down when I checked again, OB is banzukegai on the Japanese side, off banzuke. Since it's the same as the present banzukegai on the Japanese side, it could be changed to Bg as well, but that is just soto/gai on the Japanese pages for the rikishi.
Asashosakari 19,655 Posted June 8, 2022 On a side-note, the match schedules the returning rikishi were given broadly corresponded to their pre-departure ranks even though those weren't acknowledged on the separate besseki ranking. Ayazakura, who left as a komusubi, had joi-type matchups, while Sotogahama, who left as M16, mostly faced low-ranked maegashira. 1

I'm actually not sure what the physical besseki ranking looked like. Gans-san's site lists them in two columns.

They were grouped together in a box, from highest-ranked Ayazakura on the right, down to lowest Juryo Ayawaka on the left. 3
