79th All Japan Rikishi one day tournament

Recommended Posts

The 79th All- Japan one day tournament was held after a three year hiatus. Winner- Houshouryuu, who beat heyamate Meisei in the finals with a last-minute kotenage after being pushed to the edge. 32 Makuuchi rikishi took part. "I train with him every day. He's become very strong, so i was looking forward to going all out. I'm really happy,' he said. In October 2002 his uncle ex-Asashouryuu won the tournament (was an Ozeki at the time) for the first time and went on to win his first honbasho yusho a month later. Upon hearing this Houshouryuu said he would gambarize as well.

This is the Meiji shrine tournament, but since the 18th in 1958 it takes place in the kokugikan. At the shrine also after 3 years again a yokozuna dohyo-iri was performed, with tachi-mochi Midorifuji and Nishikifuji as attendants
