From Fukui pref. (and -city), which had no sekitori for 32 years (longest blank among the 47 prefectures, 2nd is Gifu with 28), Yutaro Toriyama 鳥山優太郎 (19, 192cm, 110kg) joins Hanregoma-beya and aims to be at the shindeshi exam on the 18th. University baseball background, starting with baseball as primary school 3rd grade.

He quit Nagoya university of commerce, Nucba undergraduate school in autumn after he watched the Nagoya basho this year and found his interest in sumo. A friend of the family introduced him to the heya's Fukui pref. local Minatogawa-oyakata (the last sekitori from Fukui), in August he had an experience stay in the heya and decided to join the sumo world. https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2022/10/14/kiji/20221014s00005000057000c.html

There will be 10 at the shindeshi kensa on the 18th, among them Mongolian  (Ragchaa) Jamin/Jamiyan  ラグチャー・ジャミントクトホ (23, 181cm, 150kg) from Ulaanbaatar for Takasago-beya, who finished the 6 months kenshu period and already trains with makushita.

Asashoryu's nephew Byambasuren finished 2nd - from the Nittaidai Kashiwa high -  he lost to Tottori Jouhoku's Amarsanaa, both from Mongolia. The best 32 had 2 more foreigners, but the countries of origin aren't listed in the data - so the guess: Mongolia. Jamin, also for Kashiwa (next door when I'm in Japan), seemed more like Egyptian, but is also from Mongolia. He lost the 1st bout in the best 32 to Tomurbaatar Temuren (guess), who lost his next one

He came to Japan with the same flight as Hoshoryu and Oshoma, went to the same high school in Kashiwa as Hoshoryu. The other 2 went to the wrestling club at first, he joined the sumo club from the start, Hoshoryu switched to sumo earlier than Oshoma. Jamin didn't turn pro after graduation like the nephew and went to Takudai, where he graduated in March. Best 8 in 3rd year at the national student weight division championships in the open category and in 4th year at the East Japan student championships and unfortunately only best 16 at the national student championships  - no TD, but as accomplished athlete he at least can still join at age 23. https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2022/10/14/kiji/20221014s00005000566000c.html

One of the new shindeshi is ex-Aminishiki’s nephew, Sakuraba Ryo(?). Joining Isegahama-beya, of course.

The remaining 5 are (guesses as always):

佐藤宜之(21=佐渡ケ嶽), Takayuki Sato for Sadogatake

小嶋煌生(16=湊), Kosei Kojima for Minato

ツェンドスレン・トゥシグ(19=朝日山), Tsendsuren Tüshig, a foreigner for Asahiyama

2 of the decorated Saitama Sakae high 4 that helped a kid (they'll likely continue in high school till graduation)

根岸康介(17=武隈) Kousuke Negishi for Takekuma

鶴叶翔(17=藤島)Kanato Tsuru for Fujishima

Edit: high school yokozuna Takayama will be at the All Japan and try to get a TD before he joins

Sakuraba 桜庭燎  (17, 175cm, 95kg) is from Goshogawara high - he was in the yusho team of the Aomori preliminaries for the interhigh.

Is it just me or is that 11 newcomers mentioned so far in this thread?

  1. Tomiyama for Hanaregoma
  2. Bilgun for Oshiogawa
  3. Jamin for Takasago
  4. Sakuraba for Isegahama
  5. Okano for Takekuma
  6. Miura for Oshiogawa
  7. Sato for Sadogatake
  8. Kojima for Minato
  9. Tushig for Asahiyama
  10. Negishi for Takekuma
  11. Tsuru for Fujishima

Or are the last two deferring till Haru when they graduate?

Bilgun for Oshiogawa

Didn't Bilgun officially entered for Aki, and thus is not a 'recruit' anymore ?

So that's him waiting an unnecessary extra basho + the 10 recruits (2 of which will also have to watch from the stands for some reasons).

I think one of those you mentioned is deferring, but the thread is semi all over the place with names, as it seems they all came out of the wood work (besides Bilgun) at once.

Edit: yeah Oortael is right, carry on.

Jamin is a competent but unspectacular competitor. He likes to get one hand on the belt and the other under the armpit, winning mostly by yorikiri and uwatenage.

He was a gatekeeper in college, beating most opponents who were not upper-tier competitors, but losing to everyone who was. He will need to improve significantly to make it past high makushita and into juryo. Compared to recent collegiate entrants to ozumo, I'd rank him above the likes of Toseiryu and Arise, below the likes of Takahashi, Ishioka, and Kazekeno. Similar to Otani.

Jamin this year was one of the Takudai 4 at the Kagami Biraki to demonstrate sumo, all others had their names in romaji in the video description - he in the same katakana as above

Exactly, you may notice that I quoted my post from the Aki basho in the first post as a reminder for some other new in maezumo for later on, not as new recruit and not as the usual banzuke-gai returners as likely Hokuozan

Just occurred to me: one conspicuous absence is Tetsuya Ochiai, considering it was mentioned he might not be of a high enough rank to try for the All Japan.

Posted (edited)

Akinomaki reported that Ochiai is aiming for Hatsu 2023. He picked up an injury in the Kokutai earlier in the month and may be using extra time for that. As for December's All Japan Tournament, I'm not sure exactly on how the dan system works, but I'd be very surprised if being corporate yokozuna didn't qualify him for the event; competitors get in with much lesser achievements.

For someone who already stated he wanted to turn pro, the way Ochiai's going about things is very unusual. Ichinojo took a similar path, but he was waiting on a forienger spot to open; Ochiai has no such restriction.

Toriyama had aimed to be at the koshien baseball tournaments but also had an interest in ozumo since middle school, due to baseball boy Kisenosato becoming yokozuna.  In high school he yearned to be like the great yokozuna, Hakuho, Asashoryu and Takanohana and watched their bouts on YT. In August he stayed for 10 days in Hanaregoma-beya, but he also was at Miyagino-beya and talked to his admired (ex-)Hakuho.

Those around him were not in favour of him quitting university to go into sumo, but Hanaregoma-oyakata and -okamisan came to Fukui to talk to his parents and Minatogawa caring for him helped to have him join the heya in September. He trains there for a month now, has learned the basics and gained 15kg - he needs more. His aim is the jonokuchi yusho at the Hatsu basho.

Presently there are 2 other rikishi from Fukui pref., Maikeru and Koshinoryu.

No proper name published yet, I use Mongolian names (also of locations) I find that are closest.

Tüshig (19, 178cm, 125kg) graduated from Kibogaoka high (Fukuoka) this March and has been 4th at a Kyushu tournament: "I wanted to become a rikishi, I have waited for this day the whole time." Coming to Japan and become a rikshi was his dream since childhood: "When I was small I watched Asashoryu on TV and thought I want to do sumo". He started with sumo properly at age 15, came to Japan in 2019. Among the present rikishi, he likes the sumo of Hoshoryu. https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2022/10/18/kiji/20221018s00005000577000c.html

Okano is member of the runner-up team at the interhigh this year and was runner-up in the 115kg category at the Kanto tournament, Negishi was in the best 16 at the national high school sumo select tournament this year. Okano is from Shin-Onsen town in Hyogo pref, trained there by the twin brother of Saitama Sakae main coach Yamada.

Both admire the oyakata, ex-Goeido, and joined him because he teaches thoroughly and carefully - rather than going to university, they are turning pro.

Miura also reached the  best 16 at the national select tournament, he's from Kawagoe, his father is acquainted to ex-Motohashi from the former Oshiogawa-beya, who runs a chanko restaurant in his hometown Sayama - another connection of both heya of that name apart from Hienriki.

Tsuru was member of the yusho team at the Kanto tournament

Jamiyan (I'll from now on go with the name of his personal page) has a maternal grandfather who was yokozuna equivalent in Mongolian sumo bökh, his father was a sekiwake equivalent. https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2022/10/18/kiji/20221018s00005000416000c.html

He trained also with Asanoyama, after already living half a year in the heya he now thinks "I've become a proper o-sumo-san".

He wanted to join after graduating from Nittaidai attached Kashiwa high school, but he found no heya then and went on, for some reason not to Nittaidai but to Takudai.

Ryo Sakuraba (17, 174cm, 93kg), the son of the younger sister of Aminishiki has the most articles of all this time. He aims to become Aminishiki II one day, so far he called his uncle Ami-chan, now it's "oyakata". He started sumo in 4th grade, recommended by his grandfather, at the same Tanshiro sumo dojo in Morita village/Ajigasawa town as his uncle. In middle school he was top once in the below 75kg category at the Aomori weight class tournament, best 8 national. In Goshogawara high school he was 2nd in the below 100kg category at the Tohoku tournament and at the interhigh with the team. First aim is the top of sandanme within one year, then as fast as possible to sekitori.

The shikona Aminishiki, given to the uncle by his oyakata relative, includes the meaning "return home in triumph" kokyo ni nishiki o kazaru 故郷に錦を飾る - now the next relative has joined the heya of ex-Asahifuji - it will be interesting to see which -fuji shikona he'll get first.

Nothing is known yet, we're just guessing - another Asofuji at first maybe, the older uncle

If he's an uchideshi of Aminishiki and Ajigawa wants to create a new pattern for his future heya, we may get now to something completely different
